- The US has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, ending a decades-old designation that imposed sweeping economic restrictions on the country.
Washington also revoked the terrorist designation of al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the rebel group whose forces overthrew longtime Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
The sanctions relief is being presented as a major step towards Syria’s economic recovery and reintegration into the global economy.
However, the US stressed that the move does not change its commitment to countering terrorism or holding individuals it considers responsible for wrongdoing in Syria accountable.
Syria’s central bank governor called the decision a historic step, saying it could help restore the country’s place in the global financial system.

The incident took place at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in western Mindanao, where police said a ninth-grade student allegedly brought a pistol and rifle onto campus and opened fire inside a classroom.
One Grade 10 student was killed before the alleged shooter took his own life, police said.

- President Donald Trump on Monday, August 17, threatened to bomb Oman if it "gets in the way" of a US deal with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz and called for Iran to surrender.
In a profanity-laden remark, Trump told Fox News journalist Trey Yingst: “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb … them,” referring to ongoing talks between Oman and Iran over control of the strait, as Washington pursues its own negotiations.
Iranian and Omani officials have been talking for weeks on future maritime navigation arrangements through the shipping route, and the foreign ministry in Tehran said earlier Monday that the two sides were working on a joint declaration.

- Description
- Flooded homes, damaged crops and falling prices are leaving Filipino farmers facing a double blow as heavy monsoon rains continue to batter the Philippines.
In Quezon City, 64-year-old grandmother Elia Jalota is staying in an evacuation centre after floodwaters submerged her home and kangkong patch.
Across the country, agricultural damage has already surpassed P1 billion (Dh60 million), including losses of around P313 million (Dh18.9 million) in vegetables.
Farmers are losing crops to floods while low buying prices and disrupted transport make it difficult to sell what they manage to harvest.
The farmers’ movement is calling for immediate government support to help affected communities recover, as more rain is forecast this week.

- Description
- Trump orders US-South Korea military drills to be scaled back, calling the exercises “inappropriate and hostile” toward North Korea.
The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drills have begun as scheduled, despite Trump’s call to substantially reduce US participation. The 11-day exercise is designed to prepare the allies for a potential attack from nuclear-armed North Korea.
Pyongyang has long condemned the drills as rehearsals for invasion and recently fired missiles in protest.
The exercises come as North Korea deepens military ties with Russia and gains battlefield experience through support for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

- Description
- The leader of US Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper said he visited the USS Abraham Lincoln recently, adding that the aircraft carrier had the lowest number of mental health cases of the Navy's 11 active aircraft carriers. He also praised the carrier's leadership for prioritising mental health and crew resilience.
Cooper's comments come following reports of concerns about mental health and deteriorating conditions aboard the aircraft carrier.
The ship has not made a port call in more than 200 days, setting a modern-day record for consecutive days at sea, according to Democratic lawmakers who have called for answers after sailors' families raised concerns about worsening conditions on the Lincoln.
" My time aboard USS Abraham Lincoln yesterday was awe-inspiring. I wish every American could see the crew in action. You would beam with absolute pride when witnessing their camaraderie, teamwork and resilience"
