Trump's comments come as the U.S. remains engaged in its conflict with Iran -- and as control and access to the Strait of Hormuz have emerged as central issues in negotiations.
Iran has sought concessions related to the waterway as part of broader negotiations with the U.S., while Trump and his administration emphasized maintaining freedom of navigation and preventing Tehran from controlling commercial shipping.

- Description
- Oregon voters’ narrow 2022 approval of a referendum designed to limit gun purchases has instead resulted in thousands more firearms in the state than there otherwise would have been, a new analysis suggests.
Measure 114’s proponents wanted the state to require a permit for gun purchases and to prohibit magazines that held more than 10 rounds. With support concentrated in urban counties, the measure passed by a margin of fewer than 25,000 votes, or 1.3 percentage points: 975,862 to 950,891.
A study published in the Journal of Public Economics shows that background checks, an indicator of firearm demand, rose nearly 14% in the runup to the election, then surged 157% after the measure passed.
Oregon State University economist Katie Bollman, one of the study’s authors, joined KATU News at 3:30 to talk about the study’s findings.

- Description
- Eleven New Yorkers have been charged in what Attorney General Todd Blanche called one of the largest marriage fraud prosecutions in U.S. history.
Blanche said the defendants arranged more than 1,000 sham marriages between foreign nationals, mostly from China, and Americans over the course of at least a decade.
Blanche said the defendants, mostly naturalized citizens from China, built a “multimillion-dollar cottage industry” to obtain fraudulent green cards for foreigners and “skirt the immigration laws of the United States.”
The indictment comes out of the Southern District of New York, but federal prosecutors allege the defendants arranged sham marriages throughout the U.S., including Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida.
Blanche said some of the charged defendants acted as “facilitators” – orchestrating the scheme – while others acted as recruiters to pull in willing Amer...

- Description
- Portland city councilors are poised to vote today on a term sheet that could set major renovations at the Moda Center in motion and help keep the Portland Trail Blazers in the city for the next 20 years.
This is just the beginning and not a final deal. It's part of the process toward keeping the Trail Blazers in Portland.
The proposal includes a late, 11th-hour amendment made last night. Under the change, councilors want the Trail Blazers affiliate Rip City Management, which operates the Moda Center, to pay $2 million a year in rent. That would be in addition to $3 million a year the city is asking the team to pay in lieu of property taxes.
City leaders are seeking millions more in annual payments from the Trail Blazers in exchange for what the city would contribute toward renovating the arena.
The city council meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. The meeting is open to the public but there will not be any public testimony.
