At a secret location in Tehran, four student leaders describe how they were detained and tortured for calling for reform. Despite their horrific experiences they continue to defy their government. "We advocate active resistance," proclaims leader Zarezadeh. Fellow leader Sanjari agrees. "We will not give in to this oppression. We will not put one step backwards." The students played a crucial role in securing President Katami's election in 1997. However, when his proposed reforms were blocked, they took to the streets in protest. The regime reacted harshly and over 10,000 people were arrested and tortured. Nevertheless, the student movement has proved hard to crush. The students' greatest concern is the strong rela...

Fort Stewart, Georgia, is an unlikely place for a military rebellion to emerge. Love of the army runs deep and the whole town supported the war against Saddam Hussein. But after the return-home date for the troops in Iraq kept getting postponed, a group of wives did the unthinkable. They went on local TV to demand that their husbands be sent home immediately. When news of their wives campaign reached the troops, they were elated. "Basically, the wives spoke out for the soldiers," explains Sergeant Carlos Hernandez. Another group of soldiers decided to speak out for themselves and went on prime-time television to criticise those responsible for the war. The military has been quick to condemn...

Glaciers in the Himalayan mountains are an essential source of the water, supplying over one billion people. But as a falling glacier triggers deadly flooding in Northern India, it's evident glaciers pose risks, too.

Himalayan glaciers are an essential water source, but climate change is causing them to melt. '13.8% of Afghanistan's glaciers have melted,' notes a researcher. 'If there's no glacier ... [people will] lose their farms and agriculture.' Flooding, too, is a risk. 'One year ago, one of those glacier lakes collapsed and flooded our fields ... it caused much damage,' says Amir Mohammed, resident of a Himalayan village.

The ambush in West Papua last year made headlines all over the world. The local police's investigation suggested that the military may well have been culpable for the attack. However the army was allowed to investigate these allegations themselves. Unsurprisingly, they quickly cleared themselves of any wrongdoing and blamed the assault on separatist rebels. However, American politicians are now pushing for a more thorough inquiry. "Real partners in the fight against terrorism do not murder American citizens," argues Senator Feingold. America was poised to give Indonesia funds for military training but this grant was blocked following protests from victim Patsy Spier. The...

- Bergamo - Herd Immunity?
In Spring, Bergamo was devastated by the coronavirus. But as Europe headed into a second wave in Autumn, the region was left virtually unscathed. Some say this could be herd immunity at work.
For more information, visit https://www.journeyman.tv/film/7991
In March 2020, the Italian army was called in to move bodies out of Bergamo's overflowing morgues. Now, much of the region is open, even as other parts of Europe struggle in lockdown. Claudio Cancelli, trustee of the province Nembro in Bergamo, says there were no COVID deaths this autumn: 'Three weeks ago, we had 31 positive cases. There's only about 20 of them left and everyone feels good.' A recent medical survey of the region showed around 42% of the local population developed antibodies, suggesting Bergamo has reached herd immunity. In September 2010 a legendary friendly FIFA football match took place between Bahrain and Togo. It was legendary not only because of the nature of the game, but because it later transpired that the Togolese team was entirely “fake”. The match is a spectacular example of how corruption in sport - and match-fixing specifically - is organised and executed. The players, coaches and officials i...

In March 2020, Swiss biotech company Moderna was confident that it could deliver a coronavirus vaccine 'in the next few months'. Now, it is rolling out a vaccine that is 94% effective, developed by utilising revolutionary RNA technology. By 2013, the company has just 20 employees, but its unique, experimental research appealed to investors: 'the company was able to lure people who wanted to be part of this adventure ... a lot of people took huge risks', explains one early investor. Crystal meth is a drug considered by some to be even more addictive than heroin. 'A crystal customer is a lifetime customer,' explains one Swiss drug dealer, Marc. Though the drug often comes from Eastern Europe, many addicts around the world also get their supply thanks to the operations of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel. The synthetic drug is made in Mexico, then shipped around the globe. 'They're dispatching it all over the world. They're the world leaders for crystal sales,' says Marc. To make meth, certain highly regulated 'precursor' chemicals are required - these come from factories, such as those located in China. 'Yes, we have this type of product ... we bought...

In Switzerland, plans to develop a huge wind farm are proving highly controversial. The concern, ultimately, is that wind turbines will mar the beautiful countryside, with not enough pay off in terms of energy produced. 'The promoters are selling a green miracle, but there isn't one,' says Christian Amacker, who opposes wind farms. He, along with others, feels that wind farms cause too much disruption, and don't generate enough energy to compensate. Michel Fior, president of a Swiss anti-turbine pressure group, argues that energy produced is far lower than has been promised: 'if you look at the promoter's promises, we're at 50% of the pr...
