- Proud Boys at core of disparate groups who mobbed Capitol.
All eyes are on Trump supporters following last week's Capitol riots. 'The Proud Boys', who Trump told to ‘stand by’ before the Capitol was stormed, is one particularly controversial pro-Trump group.

'The one thing the Proud Boys stand for is making men ... confident, manly and successful’, says one member of the Proud Boys. But alongside its focus on 'traditional masculinity', the group is nationalistic and violent, and has been labelled a hate group, including by the Southern Poverty Law Centre. 'The Proud Boys are listed [as a hate group] because they make no mistake about their feelings about Muslims,' says one SPLC spokesperson.

Since 2012, foreign governments, including ones with poor human rights records, have donated over 12 billion dollars to US universities. This trend has alarmed experts such as Dr Jonathan Schanzer: 'Our academic institutions are being bought by foreign interests. And it'd be one thing if it were western governments. It's another when you see foreign governments, that are at odds with US interests. 'As universities sign lucrative deals with countries like China, many say this compromises their ability to criticise these regimes. When Cryo-Save, a private company in Switzerland, offered a guarantee of having suitable stem cell material should a child get sick in the future, parents thought they were making an investment. ‘I imagined that anything concerning the health of children was well regulated,’says Pierre, a father. But the company went bankrupt and the data and stem cells of some 250,000 families across Europe was scattered abroad in what journalist Sylvie Logean describes as an act ‘to avoid considerable image damage’.“I know that profit always comes first, for any corporation,’ reflects mother Kinda. What, then, is the future for our biological material and private medical data?

For those who remember a proud regional union, the failure of the partnership is a cruel blow. Although Ethiopia's 60 million people outnumbers Eritrea by twenty to one, they both suffer from an economic meltdown caused by disputes over resources that lie in the border region. They have also been hit hard by famine. Nobody understands why they've engaged in this "crazy war" or why they chose such a time to do it. The people cry out for money to go towards food, not war. Meanwhile, gunsmoke pops in the baking air amidst the trenches and around the remains of soldiers’ uniforms. The long term future of the region has been plunged into chaos.

Eileen Chubb, a former carer in the UK, isn't surprised people are looking for alternatives. She now investigates abuses in UK care homes and has seen plenty of horror stories: ‘People were left with bedsores to the bone and when you walked onto the unit you could smell dead flesh.’ In these Thai resorts, patients are cared for 24/7. Looking after your elders is a vital responsibility in Thai culture, but even there things a...
