About Son of Fukushima:
Combining live-action and animation, Son of Fukushima tells the heart-rending story of a family profoundly impacted by not one but two nuclear tragedies: Hiroshima and Fukushima. Against the backdrop of the world’s largest radiological clean-up, the film follows the family for five years as they live through the unthinkable: a second nuclear disaster. This is a universal and deeply personal story about the inevitabilities of aging, the sacrifices made for those we love, and the relationship between man and nature.

- Victims of incest have long been silenced by cultural and familial taboos. But many are now taking the courageous step of speaking out, and challenging the culture that helps shield their abusers.

For years, Thérèse Michot repressed the memory of her abuse at the hands of her father, before therapy helped her recover her memory: 'I saw Mom as a spider with eyes everywhere, she was watching everything and covering for the pig, as I represented my father in therapy.' Memory repression is common amongst victims of incest. As psychologist Lydiane Bouchet puts it, 'The person is going to dissociate themselves from that moment in life so they can go on living.' Many still find it difficult to speak out due to their families shielding predators, or gender expectations. Arnaud Gallais who formed a group that helps other victims of abuse, believes we need to break the...

- Description
- As much of the world rushes to receive a lightly-tested pharmaceutical product, we thought it was high time to look again at the (very) big business of medicine. Leemon McHenry, PhD, guides us to the fraudulent core of ghostwritten studies, captured legislators, revolving-door regulatory agencies, pay-to-play medical journals, and the "key opinion leaders" who lend their academic credentials to giant corporations...for a price.
With every stage in the process seemingly structured for corruption, we can only wonder along with Professor McHenry: "Who's looking out for scientific integrity?"
By the time you finish this episode of Perspectives, you might just roll down your sleeve for a rethink.

'[The police] threw his fish in a garbage truck. He went after the fish. Then [the police] activated the garbage truck press,’ explains Mohammed, a protestor, on the origins of the Hirak Rif movement. Demonstrators called for the community’s basic needs to be met - they wanted hospitals, universities, and employment opportunities. The authorities responded with mass arrests and heavy sentences. Years later, security is still tight in the Rif region, and informers are everywhere. ‘There is no free speech. The government appoints certain people to keep an eye on everything,' says one ...

'Normally we would have generated 1.4 million a month in ticket sales,' explains the Van Gogh museum's director. Now, they are having to cancel exhibitions and let go of staff. Out of desperation, some museums are turning to virtual tours. ‘You can log in from anywhere in the world,’ explains one museum employee. The Dutch government has stepped in to support museums, but lockdown restrictions are still taking a financial toll. 'We're happy about the way the government is suppo...

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has been repeatedly put on trial and jailed for organizing protests. ‘We have more than 10,000 Hong Kongers who were arrested, 2,000 of us were prosecuted,’ Wong explains. Yet these protesters are willing to risk arrest under increasingly severe national security laws to stand up for their beliefs. ‘Hong Kong will be independent. That’s what I believe in,’ says 20-year old pro-democracy protester Max Mok. Meanwhile, others like politician Nixie Lam want the protesters to stop their activities – and continue their campaigns within the rules set out by Beijing. ‘You can still do protests, you can say your view...

When Deputy President Anwar Ibrahim was first accused of being linked with terrorism few people believed the claims. But American counter-terrorism experts took the accusations very seriously. They uncovered documents linking him to several companies which were believed to be fronts for terrorist groups. The more the investigators uncovered, the more they became concerned about Malaysia's role in funding terrorism. "We know that Hambali was associated with Malaysia, and that a lot of Al Qaeda leaders are coming from Malaysia," states expert Rita Kanz. Experts were also puzzled by Malaysia's decision to grant Bin Laden's financier Sheik Yassin permanent residency, after he was named as a terrorist by a string of countries. Malaysia's commitme...

A team of hunters study the wet ground for any signs of recent movement. "I've got fresh tracks over here," yells one man. This is no ordinary tracking party. The men aren't searching for animals. Instead, they're hunting for Mexicans who have entered America illegally. In the past year this group has rounded up over 1,300 migrants. They claim to be protecting their jobs and homeland from unwelcome intruders. However human rights groups accuse them of using violence and intimidation to terrify migrants and question their authority. As Jennifer Allen from Border Action Network explains: "It is not the role of civilians to be essentially kidnapping people." There are also concerns that these groups are promoting racism. Russians consume over half the world’s hard liqueur. Vodka is often cheaper than non-alcoholic drinks and beer is marketed as a soft drink. As a result, alcoholism has reached record levels, pushing down life expectancies for Russian men to just 58. “As a rule, the Russian drinks until he falls. Some continue drinking even when they’re lying down,” explains one man. Unfortunately there are few places alcoholics can turn to for help. “I lost my family, I lost my house, everything,” recalls one former alcoholic sadly. He’s one of the lucky ones - a church charity took him in. For most Russian alcoholics, the only refuge available is a humiliating night in a ‘sober-cell.’ “Russia has a very tragic history … we have permanentl...

The photographers earned the respect and admiration of leading figures like Bill Clinton but faced bitterness from less courageous peers. The emotional and psychological impacts of conflict journalism led Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Carter to commit suicide and left the others with severe post-traumatic stress.

By converting to Christianity, they hoped to escape a lifetime of persecution. "The Hindus treat us like animals," says one converted Christian. "Life is better as a Christian." But the leading Hindu party in Gujarat sees the conversion movement as little more than 'religious terrorism'. Missionaries now face huge restrictions and have to obtain permission from a magistrate to work. Now the government has started legalising their actions, handing over private businesses to the squatters. The authorities reason that the seizures are in the private good and so allowed by their constitution. However, the conservative elite feel threatened by the government's actions. "If you allow a group of people to take over a private property, it's a very bad sign," claims financial editor Sergio Datillo.
