“That is using a vehicle as a weapon, and it is a lethal form of behaviour that, as we saw over the weekend, results in deaths and serious injuries,” he said.
“But the responsibility primarily rests on the people involved in that behaviour. They’ve got to stop it because we saw what happens to the people involved in that behaviour. You’ll end up in jail, or you’ll end up in a grave.”
Mr O’Callaghan said he had spoken to Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly about introducing “pursuit training” for members of the force.

Mr O’Callaghan spoke on Monday afternoon after the incident in which five teenage boys were killed when the BMW car they were driving the wrong way on the M9 crashed into an oncoming vehicle.
For the first time in the State, gardaí will soon be specially trained in pursuit of stolen vehicles and those driving the wrong way on motorways, a move that would begin this year.
Mr O’Callaghan also noted the Garda Commissioner had said members would also be using drones for pursuit of stolen vehicles.

Alison Chawke was jailed alongside her brother, Bill, for assaulting John McHugh and Gerard Cox at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare, Co Limerick, on November 9, 2023.
On July 14, she was given a sentence of two years and two months, with the final 14 months suspended. Her brother was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, with the final 12 months suspended.
Sources say Alison Chawke was released under a community return scheme. It is understood she was eligible under the terms of her sentence.
Limerick Prison is currently running at 159pc capacity in the women’s section. It has 89 prisoners and beds for 56. Seven female prisoners are sleeping on mattresses on cell floors.

- For Carthage Buckley, a lifetime of GAA memorabilia and memories were squeezed into one room of his home in Clara, Co Offaly.
It was only when he began the process of transporting those contents to Gallen Community School that the enormity of his treasure trove hit home.
The Irish Independent travelled there this week and was equally gobsmacked at the scale of Buckley’s epic archive: so many match programmes, so many books and scrapbooks and other collectibles, some from soccer and rugby too, and with a handful of coveted signed jerseys.
The voracious collector within Buckley may be sad to see it go, but he is “over the moon” at the interest already generated and the fact that all proceeds are destined for the Dóchas Offaly Cancer Support Group in Tullamore.
