Martin said the Government could not spend RTÉ’s money on its behalf, but there “needs to be true transparency.”
Mary Lou McDonald had earlier complained about RTÉ being allocated “nearly three-quarters of a billion in taxpayers’ money” as a “bailout”.
The Taoiseach said: “We could decide to abandon public service broadcasting altogether. Just let it be a free for all. I don’t agree with that, but I’m just saying, when you (Ms McDonald) have a go at €725m funding, there are choices facing Government.
“You either cut it down, undermine it, let it go to waste or let it go private, whatever. What are you saying? Are you saying the money shouldn’t have gone?”

Outside of agriculture, the overall budget (the multiannual financial framework) will need to be progressed and if not concluded, almost concluded by the end of the year, that directly impacts on agriculture.
And on agriculture, the Minister’s priorities are to progress the Common Agricultural Policy as far as possible before the trilogues with the European Parliament and Commission begin.

- It has been an uneasy week for the national broadcaster, one that built incrementally.
First came a smattering of online backlash for its decision to air an episode of Father Ted instead of the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday evening.
Then the latest batch of the Joint National Listenership Research (JNLRs) landed, announcing a slump in all shows on RTÉ Radio 1 following the station’s recent major reshuffle.
And if that wasn’t enough, a brand new payments scandal emerged shortly afterwards.
The latest issue centres on Derek Mooney's salary after RTÉ confirmed that his pay was incorrectly listed in its public records.
Director-General Kevin Bakhurst has defended the broadcaster’s “justifiable” decision to reclassify Mooney as a producer back in 2020 and said the move was not a side deal.
