The wildfires have forced the unprecedented evacuations of people in France and Spain, prompting renewed calls for stronger disaster preparedness as climate change increases the risk of extreme fires.
Temperatures were set to soar again in France and Spain on Wednesday in a fourth heatwave of the summer, increasing the threat from wildfires that have forced large-scale evacuations of people, scorched through forests and killed wildlife while experts warned that another spell of extreme heat was imminent in Europe.

- Former top U.S. infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci sat before a Republican-led Senate committee in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, facing questions about his handling of America’s COVID-19 response.
Invoking the Fifth Amendment — as advised by his attorneys — Fauci refused to answer any questions from the Senator Rand Paul-led panel, who the now-retired doctor claimed has repeatedly tried to have put “behind bars.”
The hearing follows years of Republican accusations of Fauci lying about the origins of the pandemic and U.S. President Donald Trump challenging his decision to enforce mask wearing and nationwide shutdowns.
In the fiery session, Fauci’s primary defense attorney, David Schertler, attempted to address the Senate panel without chair recognition repeatedly, leading to his ejection from the room.
Based on Fauci’s refusal to answer questions, the committee scheduled to vote next week on a resolution â...

- As civil servants raced to finalize the purchase of a private jet for Ontario’s premier, Doug Ford was crisscrossing the province on an OPP plane.
Schedules obtained by Global News using freedom of information laws reveal that, in a month and a half, Ford took four short-haul domestic flights on the plane and chartered a jet to travel to Texas.
Between early March and mid-April, Ford flew in and out of Windsor, Kingston, North Bay and Ottawa in a single day on separate occasions.
As Colin D'Mello reports, the revelations come as the premier tries to contain a spending scandal involving some MPPs who charged hotel stays to taxpayers instead of driving home at the end of the day.

Markets took advantage of the pause, with oil prices falling after the America's claimed space for diplomacy has opened up again.
U.S. weapon stockpiles are shrinking, with a “shockingly high” amount of interceptors used over the past few months, according to Tom Karako from the Center for Strategic International Studies.

“When I saw him stab a woman in the back, I started shouting, 'Come on, let's stop him!'" a witness said. "Several people stepped in. One person threw a suitcase at him. He dropped the knives. At that moment, I grabbed him, swept his legs out from under him, and we pinned him to the ground."
The attacker was eventually detained by an off-duty police officer. His identity has not been verified. A motive has yet to be determined at this time.

Witnesses had told The Seattle Times earlier that they heard several shots around 6 p.m. local time, while Davis said the investigation remained ongoing.

Schneier explains the security breach, saying “not ill intent is important here. Nobody wanted this to happen, nobody said go attack Hugging Face,” saying these AI models are unpredictable and have “strong attack and defence capabilities.”
As artificial intelligence quickly evolves, sometimes “AI’s will do things in ways you don’t expect, and some of them will be ways you don’t want,” the expert continued.
OpenAI says they will continue their investigation into the attack, alongside Hugging Face, and “will share more details on the vu...

- Bee farmers on the Prairies are running into some major issues in the middle of honey production season. With a late start to spring and the looming threat of U.S. tariffs, most beekeepers may be looking at a below-average crop this year.
“Our biggest concern is we really only have three markets for our Canadian honey. It either stays domestic within Canada, it goes to the U.S., or Japan.
So losing the U.S. market basically means an extra 20% of Canadian honey either staying in Japan or trying to find those new markets,” Simon Lalonde from the Saskatchewan Beekeepers Development Co. said.
As Ashley Beherns reports, while Lalonde has full confidence in Canadian negotiators, he says it’s a great time to buy local.
