- Description
- A B.C. plywood manufacturer is bracing for impact as the 50 per cent U.S. tariff is scheduled to take effect Wednesday. The duties are expected to impact roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian exports.
“A 50 per cent tariff is not a margin that we can absorb, nor is it something that U.S. customers will be willing to pay,” Richmond Plywood CFO Bhavjit Thandi said.
U.S. President Donald Trump says the additional tariff will apply to a wide range of goods and is in response to retaliatory measures Canada has put in place since the trade war began.
Ben O'Hara-Byrne has the details.

- Description
- Belgium is facing what’s considered its "biggest ecological catastrophe" as wildfires have scorched thousands of hectares of land.
Around 500 firefighters from across the country and neighbouring countries have been battling the fire, along with assistance from farmers and volunteers.
Roughly 3,000 hectares in the High Fens nature reserve of moorland, peat and woods have burned – more than doubling Belgium's last record-breaking fire in 2011, which burned close to 1,400 hectares.
Firefighter spokesperson Nicolas Yernaux said although the blaze has not progressed quickly, it has burned into bogs of five or six metres deep - completely extinguishing the flames could take weeks or even months.
As Richard Pimenoff explains, the fires have caused irreparable damage to rare biotopes.

Speaking of the memorandum of understanding with Iran, he said that Iran would not make the type of deal with the United States that he thought was necessary, while mentioning Iran did want to make a deal.
"Look, we're in there for one reason: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. You understand that. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. And they won't have a nuclear weapon," Trump said.

- Summerland, B.C. residents are starting to slowly return home and assess the damage, following the tragic Bald Range wildfires that sparked in the region on Aug. 7th.
Local farmer Chamkaur Saran was just 12 hours away from harvesting his crop, when the explosive Bald Range wildfire broke out and the town was evacuated.
Saran lost 70 to 80 per cent of his crop, with the remainder of his livelihood rotting on the ground, and many of his peach trees left unsalvageable.
Crops in the Okanagan have been hit consecutively, first by a heat dome in 2021, then a cold snap in 2024 that led to the closure of B.C. Tree Fruits Cooperative.
After 32 years in the business, Saran and countless other residents will have to start fresh again.

- Prime Minister Mark Carney joined Quebec Premier Christine Frechette and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham in St. John’s, N.L. Monday, to announce a non-binding deal on the Churchill Falls project.
The deal comes after years of negotiations and an independent review, with Hydro-Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro jointly owning the Churchill Falls generating station, under a contract signed in 1969.
The provinces had reached a framework agreement in 2024 to end that deal and create a new energy-sharing arrangement with expanded generating capacity. But after Wakeham was elected last fall, he ordered a review of the deal, restarting negotiations.
“We are finally turning the page on one of the darkest chapters in our past and replacing both the notorious August 1969 Churchill Falls Agreement and the 2024 MOU, with a better deal for all of us,” said Wakeham.
Under the new agreement, Quebec would have a guara...
