As a result of the blaze, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County.
Video captured on Saturday by eyewitnesses in the area show thick smoke surrounding the hills behind a Nevada town, prompting the evacuation of thousands of homes.
In a joint press conference in Reno, Nevada on Sunday, Hawk Fire Incident Commander Shane Akerson confirmed that 42,000 people have been evacuated, with another 45,000 prepared to evacuate. He also said that six injuries have been reported, including three first responders.

"We haven't seen a really detailed overview of what was on offer and what happened," Miller says. "Certainly, the trajectory suggested that there could have been a long-term decline of the Canadian auto sector and the all-important parts industry, which supports it."

The drone was put to the test in Iceland, sinking its claws into icebergs riddled with crevasses, and successfully landing.

- Victims of state prosecution hope Canada's new national monument for 2SLGBTQ+ people, named 'Thunderhead' will be a place to learn, grieve and celebrate. The monument officially opened Friday morning in Ottawa, just west of Parliament Hill.
The monument was funded through a settlement in a class-action suit brought by 719 people who said Ottawa purged them because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The $145 million settlement set aside $15 million for the monument and memorialization exhibits.
"We are standing here looking at the queerest monument in the world. Because we need to remember. We need to never forget that this monument is meant to honour people who did not live long enough for us to make things right for them." Canadian writer Ivan Coyote said at the ceremony.
The monument has been named after a cloud. "A thunderhead is a cloud of unstoppable energy. In Anishinaabe teaching, it is said that thunder clouds are home to ...

- Description
- On Thursday, Canada-U.S. trade minister Dominic LeBlanc returned to Washington, D.C., to meet with his American counterpart in a bid to finalize a deal and avoid 50 per cent tariffs on many Canadian goods. The meeting comes after the prime minister asked premiers to put American booze back on provincial liquor store shelves to help seal the deal. Mackenzie Gray has an update on the negotiations.
Unless Donald Trump's tariffs are removed altogether, the industries at the heart of Canada-U.S. trade talks will be weaker than before he took office, Canadian business owners warn. From steel and cars to dairy and softwood lumber, they're warning of dire consequences if the wrong terms are agreed to. Sarah MacDonald reports.
The U.S. national debt has just topped USD$40 trillion, a record high as the president's approval rating sinks to a new low. The mounting debt is having implications beyond American borders, potentially pushing up borrowing costs for Canadians. G...

- The Alberta government is facing a fiery response to its push to expand AI data centres — so fiery that the government has launched a town hall tour to sell the plan, with Alberta Technology Minister Nate Glubish as the host.
The second stop of the tour was on Thursday in Redwater, north of Edmonton, which is expected to host a $13-billion AI data centre project planned by tech giant Meta. It comes after Glubish on Wednesday faced jeers, badgering and boos during a town hall in the central Alberta town of Lacombe.
Heather Yourex-West was in Lacombe for the tour's opening night and found residents have serious concerns.

- Description
- There are still no guarantees that all of Canada's provinces will agree to put American alcohol back on the shelves for the sake of this trade deal. And even if they do, there are still questions over whether Canadians will have enough thirst for any liquor from south of the border.
Provincial boycotts of American alcohol have been a major trade irritant for U.S. President Donald Trump, who pointed to what he called “discriminatory” measures when he announced fresh tariffs on Canada last month, which were delayed until Saturday while both sides work on a trade deal.
As Heidi Petracek reports, many buyers are sticking to their changed shopping habits in response to Trump's tariff threats.

- The U.S. national debt has just topped USD$40 trillion, a record high as the president's approval rating sinks to a new low. The mounting debt is having implications beyond American borders, potentially pushing up borrowing costs for Canadians.
Michael Peterson with the Peterson Foundation says it boils down to years of fiscal irresponsibility on the part of both Democrats and Republicans, adding one of the biggest factors is demographics — as some 80 million baby boomers leave the workforce and stop paying into social security.
"We paired that with a revenue policy or a tax policy that does not generate the level of revenues we need to honour the promises we've kept," Peterson said.

The Department of National Defence is proposing a significant increase to the size of the Canadian Armed Forces, including the reserve force, as it responds to a more dangerous and uncertain world.
But recruiting enough people to meet those targets could be a major challenge, and experts say the military may have to look outside its traditional ranks for the skills it needs.

- Ontario's highest court has upheld the sentence for a man who was found guilty of reckless discharge of a firearm after shooting at armed intruders in Whitby four years ago.
On June 17, 2022, armed intruders forced their way into a home on Underwood Drive. After an intruder shot his son, Jason Munroe wrestled a handgun from the armed intruder.
According to the Court of Appeal decision, "The intruders fled the house. Mr. Munroe chased them. He then stood on his porch and shot at them approximately three times as they were fleeing in their car. Munroe did not hit anyone."
The decision coincides with similar case on Wednesday, involving a Scarborough homeowner who allegedly fired at suspected car thieves in his driveway, causing damage to his neighbour's home.

- Description
- A new cancer vaccine for melanoma is showing promising results in a late-stage trial. The innovative treatment combines immunotherapy with mRNA vaccine technology.
"Moderna has developed a way to look at the patient's tumour cells that are removed at the time of surgery, look at all the mutations that are present, and then generate a vaccine that's tailored to those mutations so that the vaccine can make more cancer-fighting immune cells," Dr. Marcus Butler said. "If the results are as promising as the early phase two results, then this will really be a game-changer for patients."
In 2026, the Canadian Cancer Society estimates roughly 11,300 people will be diagnosed with melanoma and 1,250 people will die from the disease.
Health reporter Katherine Ward has more on how the technology works and when Canadians might be able to access the treatment.

- After speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said he was not announcing a return of U.S. alcohol to Manitoba’s shelves on Thursday.
“So right now, we haven't decided to put the booze back on the shelves. But hypothetically, let's say that there was a deal that, the Prime minister really, really recommended, and we decided to put the booze back on the shelves. What I would say to Canadians is leave it there,” Kinew said.
“We reserve the right to take it back off again, because we know that this guy is very erratic, the American president. And he may go back on his word, as he’s done countless times,”
“No CUSMA, no booze-ma,” Kinew said, referring to the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement.

Knuff says other B.C. farmers have made similar moves in search of more land and financial freedom.
B.C. Green Party Leader Emily Lowen warns rising costs could force more small farms to close and leave the province increasingly reliant on imported food. Kylie Stanton reports.
