Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the Russian attack "despicable", as the strikes came on an important day for parents and their children; the first day back to school.
Students were ushered to underground classrooms, not by a normal school bell, but by the sound of a siren, on the sixth straight day of Russia’s attacks.
Ukraine doesn’t have enough equipment to protect its citizens, so the devastation is worse than usual.
As Nathaniel Dove reports, parents are trying their best to give their children a normal childhood.

- Province becoming 51st state “non-starter for Albertans,” Danielle Smith says before referendum

- Description
- Asked if she’s concerned Americans may use the upcoming Alberta referendum to exploit weakness in Canada and potentially try to absorb the province as a “51st state,” Premier Danielle Smith expressed certainty Albertans would not be interested.
“No one I talk to says, ‘Gosh, I wish Alberta was an American state.’ So, I think Albertans are having a discussion about having a different relationship with Ottawa, and what that might look like, but I don't think that Albertans want to swap an overbearing Ottawa for an overbearing Washington,” Smith told reporters on Tuesday.
“I think it's a non-starter for Albertans,” she added.
Questioned on her upcoming “personal” trip to the U.S. – amid trade tensions and new tariffs from President Donald Trump – Smith said it’s her “job to continue reaching out at all levels to various influencers in the U.S. and get our message across that we have an incredible partnership.”

- Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pushed, again, for the plans for a West Coast oil pipeline through Canada to be accelerated just days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he had made an oil deal with Venezuela.
With the U.S. being Canada’s biggest customer of crude oil exports, Smith said the pipeline in question – among other future routes – would be the “right answer” to the potential threat of losing American business, so Canada could expand markets to not only Asia, but Europe too.
“There's peril in having a single customer. We saw that historically when the shale oil revolution happened and our product became less valued by the U.S.,” Smith said.
“I think that this is a demonstration of why we need to continue to develop new markets,” the premier added.

- Two people are dead and at least a dozen are missing after flash flooding ripped through parts of Grand Canyon National Park over the weekend, leading to a widespread search and rescue mission as well as evacuations, including at numerous riverside campgrounds, the National Park Service (NPS) said Sunday.
Weather forecasters warned that rain and thunderstorms could bring more flooding to the popular tourist attraction in northwestern Arizona, where the deluge destroyed the canyon’s only water pipeline, leading to emergency water restrictions for year-round residents.
The incident complicates ongoing efforts to modernize the water pipeline that serves six million visitors annually and about 1,600 Grand Canyon Village residents.
The floods caused significant infrastructure damage elsewhere, the NPS said in an update Sunday, destroying footbridges that provided hiker access to the bottom of the inner canyon on the north side of the Colorado River.

- Alberta's referendum on separation is less than two months away, but the last two weeks have seen an uptick in foreign-sourced misinformation targeting the upcoming vote.
A Canadian research team monitoring foreign interference says the online narratives, which are spreading misleading stories about Canada’s Economy and Alberta aligning with the United States, are coming from Russian and U.S. sources.
Calls are growing for Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to postpone the fall vote, as she heads to the U.S. next week, for a personal trip which will include meetings with business leaders in Tennessee.
Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenny says, “at a time when we are under economic attack, more than ever it's time for us to pull together as Canadians.”
Heather Yourex-West has more on their implications for the pivotal vote.

Residents of one of the areas worst-hit by the Himalayan floods in Nepal returned to their destroyed homes on Sunday, as they confront the enormous task of rebuilding their lives.
Authorities said the death toll rose to 750 by Sunday morning, with more than 3,000 people missing on both sides of the Nepal-China border after a torrent of ice, rock, mud and debris swept through mountain valleys and rivers on Wednesday, causing widespread devastation.
The Red Cross has estimated that more than 90,000 people are likely to have been affected by the disaster, which China has linked to the effects of climate change.
"What will we do now, nothing is left. We are living in the municipality building, we are sleeping there. Now what will we do, what not to do, we are totally at a loss. We don’t know what will we do,” said Trishuli resident Meena Gupta.

- Support for Ottawa’s US trade retaliation depends on financial situation: Ipsos

- Description
- New Ipsos polling for Global News suggests Canadians broadly support Ottawa’s tough stance against the U.S., but that support becomes more conditional when personal finances are at stake.
Ipsos Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Gregory Jack says younger and lower-income Canadians are supportive of the government’s position but have less ability to absorb an economic hit.
The polling also found six in 10 Canadians are confident Canadian politicians can handle the trade dispute.
Jack says Ottawa faces a two-track challenge: maintaining a strong position against Washington while protecting Canadians most vulnerable to the economic fallout.

- Icelanders have voted against resuming talks on joining the European Union.
In a referendum, nearly 52.8 per cent of voters rejected the proposal, according to the state broadcaster.
The vote was held amid concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump's annexation threats toward neighboring Greenland, prompting some voters to consider European solidarity.
“I think the most important thing is that we come out of this united,” Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir said Sunday, “I'm not going to say things might not change in the future, but our promise was to ask, get a result, respect it. This government will continue with the EEA agreement, but we will not go further with accession talks.”
The result comes nearly 13 years after membership talks were ended by a coalition government opposed to joining the EU.
