- Description
- U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new executive order in the White House Friday making it easier for cattle farmers to sell and process their own beef.
“We're creating a program where small and medium sized and large ranchers can sell their products directly to consumers, so that they don't have to go through the big four processors and middlemen,” the president told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump said the order will also require country-of-origin labeling for all foreign beef products.
Some ranchers have sought mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef, arguing that would support domestic producers and provide more transparency to consumers. Under current regulations, meat companies can voluntarily add a "Product of USA" label for meat born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S.

- A judge has declared a mistrial in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother charged with killing her three young children at the family’s home in Duxbury in January 2023.
Clancy, a former labour and delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder. Her lawyers have not disputed that she killed the children, but argue she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time.
Prosecutors argue Clancy was not legally insane and planned the killings, pointing to her actions before and after the children’s deaths.
Jurors began deliberating after hearing weeks of testimony, including from medical and psychiatric experts, in a case that has drawn widespread attention to postpartum mental health.

- Description
- Madrid residents joined a nationwide day of protests on Wednesday in solidarity with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, which is grappling with an unprecedented migration crisis following a mass border surge from neighboring Morocco in late July.
“We have to support Ceuta. A united Ceuta will never be sold out. Ceuta is Spanish, not Moroccan. Ceuta, Spain,” one demonstrator said.
Nearly five weeks after at least 72,000 people crossed into Ceuta, local authorities estimate that more than 10,000 migrants remain in makeshift camps or scattered across the enclave's streets and beaches, fuelling tensions and near-daily demonstrations by residents.

Both MPP’s, who live in Brampton, Ont., say the funds have been repaid, but the opposition wants to see proof.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission spoke on the accusations Wednesday, saying, “We will not tolerate it. We stand in full solidarity with Germany.”
EU foreign ministers and member nations are showing support for Germany, and while many are considering more sanctions against Russia, they also remain cautious about escalating tensions with the nuclear-armed nation.

- Description
- Asked Wednesday if Canada was still committed to enforcing counter-tariffs on the U.S. on Sept. 8 amid ongoing trade tensions with President Donald Trump, Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne suggested there were no plans to step back.
“This is not a trade war we chose. This is not a situation that we have created. But I think everyone understands that we need to respond,” Champagne told reporters.
Effective Tuesday at 12:01 a.m., Canada will impose 15, 25 and 50 per cent counter-tariffs on over 700 products drawn from those targeted by America’s Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs – equaling $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S.
Sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics – which are most impacted by U.S. tariffs – will be targeted.

- Description
- Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced Wednesday that the current pause on the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel will be extended until at least Jan. 31, 2027.
The federal excise tax on gasoline was 10 cents per litre, and the tax on diesel was 4 cents per litre, but those taxes were suspended in April. The suspension was set to end on Sept. 8.
Though the tax holiday is now set to end on April 1, Champagne revealed that the tax will be half its regular rate between Feb. 1 and March 31. Why? The finance minister said fuel prices are being pushed higher as a result of renewed hostilities in the ongoing U.S.-Iran war.
The announcement falls in line with an ongoing social media campaign to “Scrap Carney’s Labour Day Gas Tax Hike” from the federal Conservative Party.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the Bank of Canada held its key interest rate at 2.25 per cent Wednesday, as it weighs rising inflation risks against renewed uncertainty from the Canada-U.S. trade war.
Governor Tiff Macklem warned new U.S. tariffs could threaten the durability of Canada’s economic rebound, even as businesses and workers adapt to the trade disruption.
The Bank is also watching persistently high energy prices, with Macklem saying it is prepared to raise rates more than once if necessary, if inflation remain too high.
“I don’t think we’re going to get back to where we were,” Macklem said of Canada-U.S. trade relations, adding Canadians cannot count on a return to the previous relationship.

Paparo called Canada a “close ally” and later dismissed a question about a scenario where the U.S. could launch a military attack on Canada as “preposterous.
