- Galveston County leaders sold two steam-power hammers for scrap metal, and the demolition started late last week. The hammers were a fixture in front of the Justice Center for the last eight years or so, dominating the open field next to Broadway. They were part of the Cotton Concentration Co. warehouse, which was built in 1910 at 54th and Ball streets.

- The Galveston County Daily News has obtained a video of the fight that occurred on Jan. 13 at the La Marque High School gym after a basketball game between Manvel and La Marque.
It is not known who shot the video or if it has been edited before The Daily News obtained it. The Daily News only edited the video for length. The video ends shortly after the fight is broken up.
The video begins once the fight has already begun. There are many people running in the video and some creaming. There is footage of someone in red Manvel shorts and sweatshirt fighting back against someone dressed in black.

- Earl Sampson Jones sculpted an oak tree at Adoue Park in Galveston, Texas, in honor of Fannie Kempner Adoue. On Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, he used a chain saw to sculpt a chair next to the tree, where he hopes parents will read to their children. The tree was planted after the 1900 Storm, that killed thousands in Galveston. The storm surge of Hurricane Ike's Sept. 13, 2008, landfall killed the tree.

- A jury sentenced Cheretta Smith, 20, to 84 years in prison on Friday, January 13, 2011. Smith pleaded guilty to murder in the Feb. 12, 2010, slaying of her grandmother, Theretta Gayden Miller, 57, who was found dead in the Texas City home she shared with Smith. Smith admitted to stabbing her grandmother twice, although prosecutors say she hit her grandmother on the head with a candleholder three times and stabbed her four times in the stomach.
