In response to these extreme weather events, Parliament discusses on how to strengthen the EU's readiness, preparedness, and solidarity mechanisms.
Members of the European Parliament question the Commission’s representatives on the action the EU is taking to prevent and prepare for natural disasters, following the launch of the 2025 EU’s Preparedness Union Strategy and focus on the support for affected EU countries, including enhanced civil protection measures and related funding.

- 81 years after the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the European Parliament held a special session where members heard the testimony of Tatiana Bucci, who was just six years old when she was deported with her family.
Mistakenly identified as a twin with her four-year-old sister Andra, Tatiana was tattooed with the number 76484. They were among the youngest known survivors who still retain personal memories of the concentration camp.
During this special ceremony, Tatiana recalled her childhood in the camp, the promise her mother urged the sisters to make to remember each other’s names and the long journey back to life after liberation. Reflecting on her survival, she said: “I hope that all children in the world can have the life I was able to live after the war and grow old as I have.”

- Parliament discusses the challenges posed by drones and new systems of warfare and the EU‘s need to adapt to be fit for today‘s security challenges.
European countries have reported a sharp rise in Russian hybrid warfare, including conventional military provocations like fighter jet incursions and drone flights over European airspace, with at least 10 countries detecting drones near airports and military sites, many attributing this to Russia.
A European Parliament own-initiative report on drones and new systems of warfare aims to inform the EU's response to emerging security threats. The report outlines a broad strategy to prepare the EU for the age of drone-enabled conflict. It calls for drones and counter-drone capabilities to be integrated rapidly and systematically into EU defence planning, as well as for society and critical civilian infrastructure to be more robustly protected against low-cost aerial threats. This legislative proposal comes in response to Russia’s systematic weaponisation of energy supplies. This is a pattern that has been documented for the past two decades and was escalated with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022.
