Following Mr Martin’s speech, there will be a round of interventions by political group leaders.
Micheál Martin became Taoiseach on 27 June 2020. He has previously been Minister for Foreign Affairs, Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Health, and Education in different Governments.

Moldova formally applied for EU membership in early March 2022. On 5 May, the European Parliament called for the country to be given EU candidate status.
Ms Sandu serves as Moldova’s President since December 2020. She was previously Prime Minister, among other positions.

He is the founder of the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. As a gynaecologist, he helped thousands of women victims of sexual and gender-based violence in his country.
In 2014, the European Parliament awarded him the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought for his work. Four years later, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He continues to raise public awareness on the issue of sexual violence against women during armed conflicts.

On 28 March, the newspaper announced it is suspending activities until the end of Russia’s war on Ukraine. The decision is a response to mounting pressure from state communications regulator Roskomnadzor, Novaya Gazeta said in a statement.
Established after the breakup of the Soviet Union, Novaya Gazeta has always defied the Kremlin by publishing investigations into corruption and human rights violations.
Its editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021. Six of his paper’s journalists have been murdered for their work, including Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.

- For Simone Veil, a Holocaust survivor, the creation of the European Union is the most important event in the last 50 years.
In 1995, on the 50th anniversary of the Holocaust, Veil explained to the European Parliament how the tragedies of her past forged her faith in the European project.
She said it was important to remind the younger generation of the European Union’s key role in fostering peace and unity, especially whilst the EU was being criticised.
Born in France in 1927, Veil survived the Nazi concentration camps and went on to play a pivotal role in European feminism and politics. In 1979, she became the first President of the directly-elected European Parliament and was the first woman to preside over the assembly.

The Berlin Wall was torn down on 9 November 1989, after dividing a city, a nation and a continent for nearly three decades. Next came protests in Prague and the eventual collapse of the Soviet bloc. It is a historical moment and a key step towards the end of the Cold War, the German reunification and a united Europe.

Zabuzhko's work focuses mainly on national identity and gender. Her first novel, Fieldwork in Ukrainian Sex, is one of the key texts in post-Soviet Ukrainian literature.
She has been a Research Associate for the Institute of Philosophy of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, lectured in Harvard University, and worked as a columnist for some of the Ukraine's major journals.

In an emergency sitting, MEPs called on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops and restore the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. Members expressed their solidarity with Ukrainians and called for more support for the vulnerable. Parliament called for an even tougher EU response to the regime of Vladimir Putin.

- On an extraordinary plenary session, Members of the European Parliament will debate the Russian invasion of Ukraine and EU's response to it with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative Josep Borrel, President of the European Council Charles Michel, and Speaker of the Ukrainian Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk. A resolution will be voted by the plenary.
Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the political group leaders denounced Russia's military attack on Ukraine within hours of it taking place, and have expressed support of an unprecedented European and international response.
