In April 2023, the European Parliament passed ambitious laws to update the ETS and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The new system will make sure more industries pay for their emissions and encourage greater investment in green technology.
The revised ETS is part of the EU’s Fit for 55 laws to tackle the climate crisis. Find out more in our short, animated Q&A

- Description
- The European Citizen’s Initiative Stop Finning-Stop the Trade is calling for the end of trade in shark and ray fins in the EU. The initiative gathered the support of over 1.1 million signatures and asks for measures to be taken.
This is why Parliament members are debating a possible ban of the trade of shark and ray fins in the EU, including the import, export and transit of fins, unless naturally attached to the animal's body.
Every year, between 63 and 273 million sharks die as a result of fishing. Sharks are hunted worldwide, primarily because of their fins.
The fins are often collected in a cruel way by finning. Finning means that the sharks’fins are cut off at sea whilst the animal may still be alive. The remainder of the shark gets thrown overboard because their meat is almost worthless compared to the fins. Without fins the sharks sink to the seabed where they suffocate, bleed to death or are eaten alive.

Fluorinated greenhouse gases, or F-gases, are man-made gases used in aerosols, refrigerators, air conditioning or heat pumps. They are often used as substitutes for substances that destroy the ozone layer.
They account for 2.5% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions – much less than CO2 (almost 80%) or methane (around 12%) – but they can have a significant warming effect.

- From smartphones to smart cities, connected objects are generating ever more data. The European Parliament wants to release its potential. Data is key to innovation in sectors from technology to health, transport to farming. MEPs are concerned too much of it remains untapped or in the hands of tech giants. They want new rules to help smaller companies and public bodies deliver better products and services. The Data Act will set a framework for the economy of tomorrow.

- Debate: creating safer options for migration

- Description
- MEPs will discuss how to advance on the reform of the common EU migration and asylum rules with representatives from the Council and the European Commission.
The debate comes in the wake of another shipwreck that cost the lives of at least 70 migrants at the beginning of March, off the coast of Italy.
Members are expected to ask about measures to prevent irregular departures and the loss of life. They should also present their views on how to respond to the difficulties faced by Mediterranean European countries, which are usually the first entry point for migrants arriving in the EU.
Search and rescue operations at sea and disembarkation activities are not covered by a common EU legal framework, except those carried out by joint operations led by the EU border agency Frontex.
