- White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed late night host Jimmy Kimmel for what she called his "disgusting" comments about first lady Melania Trump.
"Just two days prior to the shooting, ABC's late night host Jimmy Kimmel disgustingly called first Lady Melania Trump, 'an expectant widow,'" Leavitt said at Monday's press briefing.
"Who in their right minds says a wife would be glowing over the potential murder of her beloved husband?" she added. There was no indication that Kimmel was referring to violence.
Leavitt was referring to a joke last Thursday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” during which the late-night comic was pretending to deliver a comedy routine at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

- The distressing scenes witnessed in Washington and a city under lockdown will be a grave concern for those planning the King and Queen's upcoming visit to the United States.
Security was already of paramount importance for the King and Queen’s visit to the US and will no doubt be completely reviewed in light of the terrifying situation last night.
Buckingham Palace and royal protection teams will be seeking assurances that a watertight operation will be in place ahead of the royal visit, something that appears to not be guaranteed at any stage in a country with such shocking gun violence statistics.
Royal sources said the King and Queen has reached out privately to The President and First Lady to express their sympathies with all those affected on the night and their gratitude to the security services who prevented further injury.

Buckingham palace will be keen to avoid any unnecessary showdowns particularly in the infamous Oval office.
Furthermore, concerns over the King and Queen’s safety will now be of paramount importance following the events over the weekend, adding another layer of stress to this already high profile occasion.

- Sir Keir Starmer will chair a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee on Tuesday, as he warned the impact of the Iran war could continue “for some time”.
The Prime Minister will convene the emergency committee with representatives from the Bank of England to discuss the war’s economic impact in the shadow of rising oil prices.
This Cobra meeting comes as oil prices hit a near three-week high on Monday, as hopes of progress on peace talks between the US and Iran were once again dashed.
Negotiations had been expected to take place in Pakistan before US President Donald Trump declared over the weekend that envoys from Washington would no longer be travelling to Islamabad because of a lack of progress with Iran.
Mr Trump told Fox News on Sunday: “If they want, we can talk but we’re not sending people.”

That’s nothing new – the National Front tried it before – but it is a real problem. The risk is that if we go quiet, we let those few define our national identity and sully our nation. The good news is that the racists and the bigots are a tiny minority. The vast, vast majority of people see skin colour and religion as irrelevant to Englishness. I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other. - Description
- The King has recorded a heartfelt tribute to his “darling Mama” to mark the centenary of her birth but said much of life today would likely have “troubled her deeply”.
Charles’ video message in tribute to the nation’s longest-reigning monarch describes how “she remained constant, steadfast and wholly devoted to the people she served”.
The national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II will feature a statue of the monarch as a young woman in her Garter robes in the early years of her reign, inspired by a famous portrait.
The final masterplan for the central London tribute has been unveiled to coincide with what would have been the late Queen’s 100th birthday on Tuesday.
The Queen’s former private secretary Lord Janvrin, chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee said: “We thought it was very important that the statue of the Queen, our head of state, was on the ceremonial route in her own right."

- Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has said that it is time for Sir Keir Starmer “to go” and agreed there should be a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister.
Mrs Badenoch was responding to an intervention from SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, who asked: “Does she not believe that the sorry souls opposite us should have to put their money where their mouth is, and that there should be a vote of no confidence in this Prime Minister in due course?”
Responding, Mrs Badenoch said: “I think he is right, because I don’t believe the Prime Minister has the intention of doing the honourable thing himself, even though that’s the standard to which he held everyone else.
“The decision about whether he will ultimately take responsibility for his actions is now up to Labour MPs. We heard many powerful statements from that side of the House yesterday.
“Labour MPs know that the Prime Minister has let the country down, he’s...

- Rachel Reeves said she rejected calls for a “knee-jerk” response to the global energy crisis sparked by the war in the Middle East, as she unveiled her plans in the House of Commons.
The Chancellor said she would increase the windfall tax on low-carbon energy generators by 10 percentage points, more tiebacks leading to higher production in existing oil and gas fields in the North Sea, and improving grid infrastructure. She also wants to “weaken the link” between gas prices and those paid for energy.
Ms Reeves said: “We are continuing to plan for every eventuality, but we must deal with the economic costs that are already being felt.
“I reject the demands that a knee-jerk response to this crisis, that would put household finances at risk through higher inflation and higher interest rates. Every choice I make will be about keeping costs down for families and businesses.”
She added: “This Government has the right economic...

- Description
- The sacked former head of the Foreign Office has claimed No10 was "dismissive" of vetting Peter Mandelson - and said it "wasn't a given" that he would be properly checked.
Sir Olly Robbins, who Keir Starmer sacked as the department’s permanent secretary last week, also alleged he was pressured to find a top job for the PM's ex-aide Matthew Doyle. The explosive evidence comes as Mr Starmer fights for his political survival as the Mandelson scandal plunges the Government into crisis.
Sir Olly told the Foreign Affairs Committee: "I'm afraid I don't think, at the point of his appointment and for days thereafter, it was actually a given that he would be vetted."
A political storm has erupted between No10 and the Foreign Office after it emerged Peter Mandelson failed security vetting but that no ministers - including Mr Starmer - were told. In a two-hour Commons statement yesterday, the PM vented his fury at officials who kept him in the dark and said...

- Sir Olly Robbins, who was sacked by the Prime Minister last week over the failure to disclose Lord Mandelson’s failed security checks – but he was granted developed vetting (DV) clearance anyway, said there was pressure from Downing Street to clear the appointment.
He told MPs that there was a “very, very strong expectation” from No 10 that Lord Mandelson “needed to be in post and in America as quickly as humanly possible”.
The former permanent secretary at the Foreign Office said that when he took on that role in January 2025, the DV process was already under way.
Lord Mandelson was granted DV status despite the concerns raised by UK Security Vetting, the expert agency which carries out checks.
Sir Olly said he had not seen the UKSV document relating to Lord Mandelson, but was briefed on its finding by the Foreign Office’s security chief. He told MPs he was briefed that UKSV considered Lord Mandelson a “borderline” ...

- Reform UK’s Lee Anderson and Your Party MP Zarah Sultana were thrown out of the Commons after accusing Sir Keir of lying and then refusing to comply with Sir Lindsay’s demand to withdraw the accusation.
The Prime Minister faced repeated questions over a letter from former cabinet secretary Lord Simon Case, from November 2024, which appeared to advise Sir Keir that security clearances should be done before confirming Lord Mandelson as his choice for the role.
The note said that in the case of a political appointment “you wish to take, you should give us the name of the person you would like to appoint and we will develop a plan for them to acquire the necessary security clearances and do due diligence on any potential conflicts of interest or other issues of which you should be aware before confirming your choice”.

"They want transparency and they want to know that they can have confidence in the words of elected politicians, like all of us in this chamber.
"On the question of Peter Mandelson, it was in the 90s that Peter Mandelson had to resign from the cabinet for the first time because of his dealings with the millionaire Geoffrey Robertson. It was a few years later he had to resign from the Cabinet for the second time, because of his relationships with the billionaire Hinduja family.

In a statement to the Commons, he said: “Let me be very clear the recommendation in the Peter Mandelson case could and should have been shared with me before he took up his post.
“Let me make a second point, if I had known before he took up his post, the UKSV (UK Security Vetting) recommendation was that developed vetting clearance should be denied. I would not have gone ahead with the appointment.”
In a statement to the Commons, the Prime Minister said he, and Parliament, should have had this information “a long, long time ago”.

- Anas Sarwar has branded Reform 'Tories in disguise' and insisted he can win May's Holyrood election.
The Scottish Labour leader called out the " race-bating " of Nigel Farage's party, and while accepting his party were "underdogs", claimed he could defy the polls on May 7.
It came as polling guru Sir John Curtice claimed “no politicians” were popular at the moment, and polls showed Labour faced an uphill battle to dethrone the SNP in Scotland.
Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Sarwar said: “I accept that we go into the election as underdogs, but this is an election I believe that Labour can win and the reason why I think this election Labour could win is the SNP has been in power for almost 20 years.

- Keir Starmer faces a make-or-break showdown with MPs after the Peter Mandelson scandal brought the Government into crisis.
The Prime Minister will address the House of Commons at around 3.30pm. He will face tricky questions over why the so-called Prince of Darkness was sent to Washington despite failing a vital vetting procedure. Mr Starmer says he did not know, and said it was "outrageous" the Foreign Office did not inform him.
On Thursday the department's chief, Sir Olly Robbins, was dramatically sacked after the latest revelation. But the former mandarin's allies insist he did nothing wrong and accuse Mr Starmer of throwing him under a bus. UN diplomat Tom Fletcher said his friend was "heartbroken" and said Sir Olly has public service and integrity "stitched into his DNA".
Mr Starmer told The Mirror he will be "crystal clear" as he protested his innocence. He said: "The fact that I wasn't told when I said to Parliament that due process had been...
