In his third major new policy since becoming PM on Monday, Andy Burnham said the 20% cut would protect "cherished venues" which have been closing at an alarming rate. He accused his predecessors of not doing enough while hundreds of pubs disappear each year.
No10 says the new business rate cuts will benefit nearly 32,000 venues - saving the typical pub an estimated £1,100 in the next financial year. Mr Burnham and Chancellor John Healey said the £100million support package is fully funded, hinting there could be hikes for businesses they say do not benefit communities, such as vape shops.
The government also said firms that sell through online marketplaces but do not pay their fair share of tax will face a crackdown.

Mishba Uddin said the 15-year-old girl Samiha Rahman and her mother Shelina, who also died, "were not very good swimmers" and were just on a "day out" at the beach. Despite the valiant efforts of teenagers on the beach, both Samiha and Shelina, known to family as Shally, were pronounced dead.
Matiur Rahman, Shelina's brother-in-law, told of the shock the extended family was feeling. He said: "We all feel very bad, my four brothers, my sister... My whole family - we are speechless. We can't believe what we heard. We are very shocked."
Paying tribute to his sister-in-law, he told the BBC: "Shally was a helpful person. She was a housewife and looked after the kids. She was very good actually."

- Donald Trump gatecrashed another trophy presentation as the United States President decided to hang around for the start of the celebrations after Spain beat Argentina in the World Cup final.
The 80-year-old caused a stir last summer when Chelsea won the Fifa Club World Cup, which was held across the United States, by staying put after handing the gold over and was even seen bobbing along while Chelsea's players celebrated their achievement.
Trump repeated the trick in New Jersey after handing Spain's captain, Rodri, the coveted Jules Rimet trophy, albeit he didn't stick around for quite as long this time around. He lingered on the edge of the platform for a few moments as Spain celebrated before being ushered along gently by a laughing Gianni Infantino.
It was confirmed last month that Trump would once again present the trophy to the winners of the tournament.

- Two "experienced and talented" hackers cost Transport for London (TfL) £29million after an "extremely serious" hack.
Thalha Jubair, 20, and Owen Flowers, 18, conducted the cyberattack on TfL’s online network which could have done "catastrophic damage" between August 31 and September 3, 2024.
As a result of the hack, all of TfL’s more than 27,000 employees were forced to attend an office to reset their passwords. The attack included data from the Oyster refund system being accessed, delaying contactless systems and closing down applications for Oyster photocards for children and young people.
Jubair and Flowers, the culprits behind the "multi-day intrusion", appeared at Woolwich Crown Court today, having admitted their roles in the hack.
