- ► The family of Belfast stabbing victim Stephen Ogilvie have called for calm after a night of unrest that saw people forced from their homes as properties and cars were set ablaze.
In a statement, they said they were “completely devastated by the horrific attack on our loved one” and thanked local heroes that came to his rescue and “absolutely saved his life”. They said peaceful protest is the “only way forward”, adding: “We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility."
The statement came after Hadi Alodid was remanded in custody at Belfast Magistrates’ Court for four weeks after being charged with the attempted stabbing murder of Mr Ogilvie, threats to kill an NHS radiographer, and possession of a knife.
And as anti-immigration protesters marched to the Irish parliament calling for a referendum on the EU Migration Pact.

- ► Donald Trump has vowed to hit Iran “very hard” in retaliation for the downing of a US Apache helicopter near the Omani coast earlier this week as the ceasefire agreement descended into tit-for-tat hostilities.
The US President, who suggested on Monday that a deal could be done within a fortnight to end the 14-week conflict, today said Iran will have to “pay the price”.
Despite a ceasefire agreement being in play, Mr Trump said the US have the “right” to strike back and will do so: “We hit them hard yesterday, and we’re going to hit them again today.”
He added: "We are going to be attacking them, attacking them very hard.”

Israel struck Iran after Tehran fired missiles towards Israel late on Sunday, which it said were in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Lebanon. Writing on Truth Social, Mr Trump said: “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting’....

Other findings include the revelation that the King foots the bill for Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s accommodation in royal palaces despite both Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's daughters being non-working royals.
And for a number of years, their adjusted rents – reduced because the Royal Household properties require tenants with security clearance – were based on out-of-date open market valuations.

A judge has paid tribute to a woman who was raped in a horrific roadside attack in 2003, calling her a “hero”, as he jailed her attacker for 24 years.
Paul Quinn was sentenced on Friday - having earlier being found guilty of rape, strangulation and grievous bodily harm – for the crime that saw Andrew Malkinson wrongly serving 17 years.
The now 60-year-old was released in 2020, and his conviction was quashed in 2023 after DNA evidence identified Quinn.
In sentencing Quinn, Mr Justice Bright spoke of the “heroic” actions of the woman who had enduring an attack so violent she was lucky to have survived and then spent 23 years waiting for justice to be served.
Mr Justice Bright said it has “troubled” him for a long time that the judicial system has “utterly inadequate terms” for the person to whom crime is done.

The decision was made after two separate juries at Liverpool Crown Court could not reach verdicts on allegations that Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, and Muhammad Amaad, 26, assaulted Pc Zachary Marsden in July 2024 causing him actual bodily harm.
Both men, from Rochdale, denied the charge and said they acted in lawful self-defence, or in defence of the other.
Last week, the second jury was discharged after they deliberated for nearly 20 hours following a five-week trial.
Amaaz was remanded in custody last year after he was convicted at the first trial of the assault of Pc Lydia Ward and Pc Ellie Cook during the same incident on July 23. He will be sentenced on June 26

- ► Two men have been jailed in a landmark fatal dangerous driving case where the passenger received a longer sentence than the driver.
Uways Hussain was jailed for 11 years and eight months, and Usmon Mahmood – who was a passenger in the car – was given 12 months and nine months for the crash in Manchester in March 2026 and resulted in the death of Sylvester Abayomi.
Police believe it is the first time nationally where a passenger has been convicted for aid and abetting causing death by dangerous driving.
The sentences, handed down Friday, following a night of dangerous driving which saw the pair film themselves travelling at speeds of over 100mph in a 30mph area; seconds before impact, they were recorded at 139mph.
The vehicle was owned by Mahmood, but he let his mate drive. Mobile footage from the evening shows Mahmood inhaling from a balloon while sitting in the passenger seat. The pair ran red lights, weaved through t...

A Sikh man has been found guilty of the murder of an 18-year-old university student by stabbing him to death with a Sikh kirpan ceremonial knife with a 21cm blade.
Vickrum Digwa told police a “wicked lie” that he was the victim of a racist attack after he stabbed finance student Henry Nowak, from Chafford Hundred, Essex, five times in the incident in Belmont Road, Southampton, on 3 December 2025.
He also “lied” by telling officers that he had not stabbed Mr Nowak despite the student’s pleas for help as he told the police that he was injured.
This led the officers to arrest Mr Nowak and putting him in handcuffs moments before he collapsed and became unconscious before dying despite their efforts to give him first aid.

Mr Madely describes the prison as an “extreme corner of a human zoo” with inmates cooped up like animals “on a battery farm”, held in total isolation with “absolutely nothing to do”.

She said even the strongest swimmers need to realise that open water beauty spots can be “death traps” and urged people not to risk their lives to cool off.
The water safety campaigner said she would like water safety to be taught more consistently so "all children across the board (are) being taught exactly the same thing.”

The Prime Minister described the case as “distressing” and praised the “courage” of the victims who came forward.
Two girls were raped in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, by two 15-year-olds and one 14-year-old who were given non-custodial sentences by a judge at Southampton Crown Court, who said he wanted to “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily”.
Asked about the outcome during a visit to East Sussex on Tuesday, Sir Keir said Attorney General Lord Richard Hermer had examined the case and was referring it to the Court of Appeal for review.
“I think it’s distressing for everybody to see, to hear about,” he said, adding he had found it “distressing as a politician” and “as a father”.

- ► One of Scotland’s leading butchers has launched a campaign for the US to legalise haggis, as the Tartan Army prepares to head across the Atlantic for the World Cup.
Federal food regulations relating to the consumption of offal mean haggis has effectively been banned in the US since 1971, leaving Scottish producers with no way of exporting it. Simon Howie Butchers, based in Perthshire, is launching a petition to “make haggis legal again”.
There will also be a campaign fronted by Scottish broadcaster and journalist Gordon Smart.
Flags reading “no haggis, no party” are being supplied to football fans heading to the US.
Simon Howie said: “Scotland football fans are widely recognised as the best in the world and they are about to make the trip of a lifetime, but they’ll be doing it without access to their national dish. “With such warmth and long-standing affinity between Americans and Scots, we’re appealing t...

"You'll never see the light of day again, if I have anything to do with it.
"I think you're a coward.
"I have nothing else to say to you."

Squadron leader George Morley Fidler, from Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, was buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission London Cemetery and Extension in Longueval, France, on Tuesday, on what was the 86th anniversary of his death. He had no known living relatives.
His body was found still in the pilot’s seat of his Hurricane aircraft when workers began excavating to expand a canal, and he was later identified by war detectives after extensive DNA testing.
The pilot, known to his family and friends as ‘Morley’, was described as an “exceptional” pilot. He was born on 30 September 1912 and joined the forces in 1934.
