- ► 16 children who were discovered living in “wretched conditions" in the US state of Ohio have been rescued by police.
Officials say the children, all from the same family, were kept in a 12-by-12-foot room with with human waste for much of the past four years.
Authorities described the scene as "almost beyond comprehension" and "pure evil," noting the children were barely able to communicate, and an 18-year-old developmentally disabled individual could not write her name.
Seven children were transported to hospitals, with two flown by helicopter and one in a critical condition.
The children’s parents and two grandparents were each charged with 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment because it involves “serious physical harm”, said Vinton County Prosecuting Attorney William Archer. He also stressed that this was not a human trafficking case but an “intra-family situation”.

- ► Two 15-year-old boys who were spared custody for the rape of two girls in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, have been sentenced to four years’ detention after the Court of Appeal ruled their sentences were “unduly lenient”.
The boys, known as X and Y, and another aged 14 known as Z, were given non-custodial sentences in May for a combined 10 counts of rape and seven indecent image offences related to two victims, who were separately attacked in the Hampshire town in November 2024 and January 2025.
The two older boys were involved in both attacks, while the 14-year-old encouraged the rape of the second victim.
They were given non-custodial sentences in May after a judge at Southampton Crown Court said he should “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily” and that detention was a “last resort”, but the Attorney General referred the sentences to the Court of Appeal as “unduly lenient” days later.

- ► A decision on the sentences of three teenage boys for the rape of two girls slammed as “unduly lenient” is expected to be delivered by appeal court justices on Thursday afternoon.
Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr said the boys are expected to attend Southampton Crown Court, and appear at the Court of Appeal in London via videolink, as the justices want to “address the boys directly”.
Opening the Attorney General’s case, Tom Little KC told the Court of Appeal that “no sentence other than detention was appropriate” for the boys who were spared custody over the rape of two girls.
Mr Little said that Judge Nicholas Rowland, who sentenced the boys at Southampton Crown Court in May, oversaw a “difficult sentencing exercise” given the ages of the offenders and the victims, but that the case involved “the application of well-established principles”.

Nigel Farage was paid £270,000 from a gold marketer for which he is a brand ambassador.
It is the Reform UK leader’s largest single payment registered for work outside his role as an MP, and its reignited debate about the rules around MPs having second jobs.
Mr Farage has previously faced criticism over his £400,000-a-year second job encouraging people to buy gold for Direct Bullion. His latest payment, for just 12-hours work, is double his 2025 fee and was registered in May. It appears in the politician's latest entry in parliament’s register of interests, published Tuesday.
Mr Farage declared that the payment from Direct Bullion was for work amounting to an estimated four hours per month across a three-month period.
A spokesman for the MP said: "As has previously been reported and declared, Nigel Farage is a brand ambassador for Direct Bullion."

Shabir Ahmed, 73, had dual British Pakistani citizenship but was stripped of the former after being convicted in 2012 for multiple rape and sexual offences against girls in what became a national scandal.
Probation Service documents shared online, suggest Ahmed will be freed on Thursday.
He will be subject to licence conditions, including that he, initially, must live in supervised accommodation 24/7 and be subject to an “exclusion zone” centred on Rochdale.
The papers, said to have been released by one of his victims, says Ahmed can’t be deported back to Pakistan due to provisions under the Immigration Act 1971.
Because Ahmed arrived in the UK before 1973 and lived in the country for at least five years before his deportation was considered, he can’t be removed. <...

Brittany Clark was hiking with her boyfriend, Chance Allison, and a friend when they decided to cool off in the Econlockhatchee River in Florida.
The 31-year-old was then ambushed by a 12-foot alligator.
Mr Allison reportedly tried to fight off the apex predator that tore off one of Miss Clark’s arms and left the other barely attached.
A medical examiner’s report reads: “While they were swimming an alligator grabbed [Brittany] by her arm and began the ‘death roll’.
“Her boyfriend Chance grabbed the alligator trying to get it to release her when it took them both underwater.”
Mr Allison was able to free one of Miss Clark’s arms, “for a moment” before the alligator bit down on the other one, the report says.

An estimated 5.3 million households on standard tariffs, who don’t have a smart meter, are being urged to submit a meter reading before the price cap, set by regulator, Ofgem, rises 13 percent.
Households that don’t submit up-to-date meter readings risk having some of their June usage charged at the more expensive rate.
Based on the new rates, the average gas and electricity bill will increase by £221 to £1,862 a year. The step up reflects the spike in global energy market prices caused by the war on Iran.

Killers who take the lives of their partners or exes will face an extra 10 years in jail under plans to overhaul controversial sentencing laws.
Under existing laws, domestic killers got lighter sentences because they often did not bring a weapon to the scene of the crime – they used something already there, like a kitchen knife.
As a result, the typical sentencing starting point for domestic killers is 15 years, compared to 25 years in other circumstances.
The change follows a campaign by three bereaved mums.

The PM said conflicts in Ukraine and in the Middle East are not “remote” threats.
“We see the horrendous human toll of these conflicts, which cuts across our values of justice and sovereignty, and that simple British impulse that bullies and dictators cannot be allowed to push people around,” Sir Keir said as the defence investment plan was revealed.

The quakes struck in the country's north, about 100 miles west of the capital. The first of the two quakes hit just after 6pm on Wednesday evening, with a magnitude of 7.2. Less than a minute later, a second, even more powerful, at 7.5. It was the strongest to hit the country in over a century.
Rescuers continue to search through the rubble for survivors.

- Description
- ► Around 300 schools across the UK will close or partially close this week and people are being warned not to travel as a 50-year weather record is expected to be beaten in the next two days.
The top temperature recorded so far on Tuesday afternoon was 34.5C in Wisley, Surrey, while Northern Ireland and Scotland saw their hottest days of the year, with temperatures hitting 26.4C and 28.8C. Temperatures are expected to reach 39/40C in England on Wednesday, with a red extreme weather warning in place until Thursday evening.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said it is possible the UK will see temperatures "higher than the 39C".
Forecasters expect the highest recorded temperature for June of 35.6C, set in 1976, to be broken this week along with the highest minimum temperature for June of 22.7C, which was also set in 1976.
The Met Office added: “The high temperatures only tell part of the story however, as high humidity will a...

- Description
- ► The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for extreme heat in central and southern England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday.
Dr Will Lang, chief meteorologist at the organisation said: “We are forecasting extreme temperatures in the next few days, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday, when it looks like we’ll be seeing maximum temperatures into the high 30s.
“But also, we are stressing very high overnight temperatures which will be very uncomfortable for vulnerable groups, and very humid conditions as well.”
He said the conditions would far exceed the heat seen in June in the past and was “a much bigger scale” than the heatwave the UK experienced at the end of May.
Mr Lang also said the extreme heat would be of greater longevity than the record heatwave in 2022, when, for a “short, sharp” period, temperatures climbed above 40C in some places for the first time ever in the UK.

- ► Prime Minister Keir Starmer says that he would stand in a Labour leadership contest were one to happen - but warns that such an event would "plunge the country into chaos".
His comments come after Andy Burnham - seen by many as the biggest threat to his tenure as party leader - became the newest MP in Parliament, after winning a landslide majority in the Makerfield by-election.
At his victory speech, Burnham raised the alarm for the issues facing Labour, saying this is "Labour's last chance to change", as he vowed to lay out a "new path for Britain" - comments which appear to outline his intention to challenge for the party leadership.
Reform UK finished second to Labour in the by-election, nearly 10,000 votes behind Burnham. Nigel Farage has urged voters who backed their rival right-wing party Restore Britain to "think again".

The Greater Manchester mayor has become less popular as Thursday’s vote nears, according to YouGov polling, and the people on the streets are divided with some critical of Burnham simply using the seat to topple Sir Keir.
One resident said, “Andy is taking us for a ride”, while another said they were divided on whether to vote “Restore or Reform”. Burnham faces challenges from Reform’s Robert Kenyon and Rebecca Shepherd from Restore. The Guardian reported on Wednesday that tactical voting could be used by Greens and Lib Dems supporters to keep Reform out of power.

The decision, on Monday, came after the High Court ruled in February that the decision was wrong, and after police arrested 72 Palestine Action protesters on Friday as four activists were being sentenced.
In a statement following the ruling, Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori said the group was "surprised" by the judgement and will fight on.
“We will fight this all the way. We will seek permission to appeal to the Supreme Court and, if need be, take this to the European Court of Human Rights.
“We are confident we will ultimately succeed because criminalising peaceful political protest in this way is a flagrant violation of our fundamental rights and freedoms in Britain, protected in the Human Rights Act, which enshrines the European Convention of Human Rights.”

The plan has been applauded by online safety campaigners and the families of children who have taken their lives due to the harmful effects of social media.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) also welcomed the move but said a “ban alone is not enough”.
“This is a societal threat and one that is the responsibility of us all. A ban alone is not enough, and ongoing action is needed from policing and government, education, communities, and particularly tech platforms themselves,” Chairman of the NPCC Gavin Stephens said.
