- ► At this luxury game reserve in Cape Town, South Africa, holidaymakers pay big bucks to get up close and personal with the wildlife.
But sometimes all it takes is a bag of crisps. This hungry baboon decided it wasn't going to wait for leftovers, so charged in and helped itself - unnoticed by the sunbathers distracted by their phones.
When it was caught by hotel security, it made its escape via the pool. Until the next time.

- ► Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been photographed with an unexplained bruise on his face as it emerged he has been “potentially raking in millions” of pounds by subletting three royal cottages, while paying a peppercorn rent.
The National Audit Office (NAO) has published a report into the royal family’s residential property arrangements after controversy surrounding the disgraced former duke’s lease of the Crown Estate home.
Other findings include the revelation that the King foots the bill for Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s accommodation in royal palaces despite both Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's daughters being non-working royals.
And for a number of years, their adjusted rents – reduced because the Royal Household properties require tenants with security clearance – were based on out-of-date open market valuations.

- ► For 17 years, Andrew Malkinson was locked up for a crime he never committed. A horrific rape.
Today, 23 years after the victim was tackled down a roadside embankment in Salford while she walked home, before being choked unconscious, bitten, raped and severely beaten, her attacker was finally brought to justice.
Peter Quinn, now 52, has been jailed for 21 years after earlier being found guilty of rape, strangulation and grievous bodily harm. He will serve an additional three years on licence, bringing his combined sentence to 24 years.
Mr Malkinson hit out at the sentence, calling it insulting, saying Quinn got a “softer sentence than was imposed on me, an innocent man”, and maybe freed after as little as 14 years.
Mr Malkinson was sentenced to life imprisonment.

- ► The only word that adequately describes people who bring rape cases to court is “hero”.
A judge has paid tribute to a woman who was raped in a horrific roadside attack in 2003, calling her a “hero”, as he jailed her attacker for 24 years.
Paul Quinn was sentenced on Friday - having earlier being found guilty of rape, strangulation and grievous bodily harm – for the crime that saw Andrew Malkinson wrongly serving 17 years.
The now 60-year-old was released in 2020, and his conviction was quashed in 2023 after DNA evidence identified Quinn.
In sentencing Quinn, Mr Justice Bright spoke of the “heroic” actions of the woman who had enduring an attack so violent she was lucky to have survived and then spent 23 years waiting for justice to be served.
Mr Justice Bright said it has “troubled” him for a long time that the judicial system has “utterly inadequate terms” for the person to whom crime is done.

Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Taleb was fatally injured by an Audi being driven by 21-year-old Zulkernain Ahmed in Sheffield on 4 June 2025.

- ► The murder of Henry Nowak sparked a fierce debate around policing and racism today. Nigel Farage kicked things off, by claiming the teen’s death was an example of “two-tier” policing and urged people to respond to the case with “pure cold rage”. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch wasn’t having it, accusing the Reform leader of using the case to deepen divisions.
Henry was handcuffed and arrested as he lay dying after his killer, Vickrum Digwa, told police he was the victim of racism – a matter now being investigated by the police watchdog. Both Henry’s family and Digwa’s have pleaded for the case not to lead to further divisions.
Speaking in the House of Commons today, the home secretary told how misinformation about the officers involved in the case had led to one – not involved in the case – having to move house over threats to his family.

The Prime Minister described the case as “distressing” and praised the “courage” of the victims who came forward.
Two girls were raped in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, by two 15-year-olds and one 14-year-old who were given non-custodial sentences by a judge at Southampton Crown Court, who said he wanted to “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily”.
Asked about the outcome during a visit to East Sussex on Tuesday, Sir Keir said Attorney General Lord Richard Hermer had examined the case and was referring it to the Court of Appeal for review.
“I think it’s distressing for everybody to see, to hear about,” he said, adding he had found it “distressing as a politician” and “as a father”.

- ► One of Scotland’s leading butchers has launched a campaign for the US to legalise haggis, as the Tartan Army prepares to head across the Atlantic for the World Cup.
Federal food regulations relating to the consumption of offal mean haggis has effectively been banned in the US since 1971, leaving Scottish producers with no way of exporting it. Simon Howie Butchers, based in Perthshire, is launching a petition to “make haggis legal again”.
There will also be a campaign fronted by Scottish broadcaster and journalist Gordon Smart.
Flags reading “no haggis, no party” are being supplied to football fans heading to the US.
Simon Howie said: “Scotland football fans are widely recognised as the best in the world and they are about to make the trip of a lifetime, but they’ll be doing it without access to their national dish. “With such warmth and long-standing affinity between Americans and Scots, we’re appealing t...

"You'll never see the light of day again, if I have anything to do with it.
"I think you're a coward.

An RAF pilot killed during World War Two - but only discovered in 2022 - has been laid to rest with full military honours, 86 years after he was shot down over northern France.
Squadron leader George Morley Fidler, from Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, was buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission London Cemetery and Extension in Longueval, France, on Tuesday, on what was the 86th anniversary of his death. He had no known living relatives.
His body was found still in the pilot’s seat of his Hurricane aircraft when workers began excavating to expand a canal, and he was later identified by war detectives after extensive DNA testing.
The pilot, known to his family and friends as ‘Morley’, was described as an “exceptional” pilot. He was born on 30 September 1912 and joined the forces in 1934.

Rachel Reeves says there will be a temporary reduction in VAT from 20% to 5% from when schools break up in Scotland at the end of June until children return to classrooms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on 1 September.
100 products, including biscuits and chocolate will be cheaper, thanks to tariff cuts. Children in England will also get free bus travel in August. Reeves has allocated more than £100million to cover this cost and assist bus operators dealing with their own rising expenses.
Ticket prices for families at various attractions such as theme parks, zoos and museums will also be cheaper during the summer holidays through the cut to VAT.

- ► In what is believed to be a UK-first, a grandfather has avoided major brain surgery after experts performed an operation through his eye-socket.
Andrew Wood had a potentially life-threatening bulge in a blood vessel. Normally, such cases are treated by removing part of the skull and moving sections of the brain to access the problem.
Instead, surgeons gained access through the 61-year-old's eye socket which allowed them to get to the aneurysm without even touching the brain.
The operation was performed by specialists at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

- ► A decision will be made on whether criminal charges will be brought over the Grenfell fire before the 10th anniversary of the disaster next summer, police have said in an update that’s bittersweet for families bereaved by the tragedy.
The Met Police said today that files of evidence will be submitted to the CPS by 30 September, with charging decisions before 14 June 2027. The force said that 57 individuals and 20 organisations are suspects of criminal offences.
The Met has looked at the role of 15,000 individuals and 700 organisations relevant to the investigation in what is the largest and most complex inquiry the force has ever carried out.
The blaze, in June 2017, claimed the lives of 72 people and was found by a public inquiry to have been avoidable.

- ► It’s been called a “public health emergency of international concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO).
An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern Ituri province has seen several hundred suspected cases and at least 80 reported deaths. The disease has also spread beyond the country, with two confirmed cases, including one death, in neighbouring Uganda. Two other neighbours – Rwanda and South Sudan – are now on “high alert” and the WHO warns the outbreak could be “much larger”.
However, the outbreak does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency, WHO says.
The first known case was a nurse who developed symptoms on 24 April, so the virus had been spreading undetected for weeks.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which has only caused two previous outbreaks, and hasn’t been seen for over a decade.

- ► The Labour leadership race is not officially underway yet, but the fight to replace Keir Starmer is becoming increasingly complicated for those wanting to force him from power.
Burnham needs to win a by-election in Makerfield, in the north-west of England, to guarantee a route back to Westminster, but Reform’s Nigel Farage’s hopes to stop him, vowing to “throw everything at” the fight.
Meanwhile, Wes Streeting, who stood down as health secretary last week and declared his leadership intentions over the weekend, has been accused of making Burnham’s return even trickier, by raising the prospect of the UK returning to the EU. Brexit, he said, was a “catastrophic mistake”. Burnham’s team believe it's a deliberate attempt to raise the importance of Brexit in the leave-voting constituency.
Farage has since branded Burnham, "open borders Burnham”, igniting the polarising issue even further.

If successful, Mr Burnham is widely expected to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the party leadership.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “Labour’s ruling body, the National Executive Committee has today given permission to Andy Burnham to stand in the candidate selection process in the forthcoming by-election for the Makerfield constituency.”
Meanwhile, the BBC reports that it has been told that Wes Streeting intends to stand as a candidate in any future Labour leadership race.

The tragedy unfolded during the early hours of Wednesday morning, with emergency services being called about someone in the water at 5.45am. Police say they have identified the women and notified next of kin but have only revealed they were aged between 20 to 30 years old.
Authorities believe the women may have got into difficulty after stepping off a shingle shelf which descends into deep water.
One theory is that the women may have gone in for a paddle - as they had not removed their clothes - and got into trouble. Police have not commented on that, saying that they are examining a “a number of hypotheses”.
