- Florida’s Palm Beach Zoo is celebrating its koalas. A koala joey, born in September, is just starting to emerge from its mother’s pouch. It comes as the zoo opens its newly renovated habitat for the marsupials.
The revamped area is designed to mimic the Australian Outback to support the koalas’ natural behaviors with more greenery and sunlight.
Koalas in the United States are on loan from Australia. The birth was Palm Beach Zoo’s first, and is considered crucial for genetic diversity of the species in the U.S., Amarylis Celestina, who oversees the koalas, said.
