- The Hurricane Hunters gather data weather data from dropsondes and aircraft sensors, which is given to the National Hurricane Center to assist them with their forecasts and storm warnings.
The Hurricane Hunters are the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron of the United States Air Force Reserve.
Satellite images suggest that Sam has strengthened. The eyewall of the hurricane has become more intense, with a warmer eye noted during the past several hours since the last reconnaissance aircraft departed.
Another Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter plane is scheduled to fly through Sam in a few hours for a better look at the intensity.
Sam is forecast to move into an area with somewhat lower wind shear and higher ocean heat content by late Wednesday. In addition, the hurricane will likely be moving a little faster, which decreases the upwelling potential under the storm. These factors lead me to believe Sam isn't quite done intensifying,...

Carolina Weather Group photographer Dan Whittaker suggests checking your local weather, specially satellites, to check visibility. Cloud cover and rain could easily block your view.
And a must have is a tripod. At night, you're going to be using long exposure to capture the launch and you will need that camera to be still and steady.

Likely to recieve the name of Odette or Peter, the possible tropical system has yet to form off the Southeast coast. The system has a 70% chance of forming in the Atlantic Ocean. It would then pass the Carolina coast, bringing rough surf and rip currents to the beaches of the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
The storm, along with the remnants of Nicholas and a cold front, will return rain chances to the Carolinas for the rest of this work week and through the weekend.

An unsettled period is expected for the second half of the week and into the weekend. A little more clarity tonight as the same players we talked about last night will be at play including the remnants of Hurricane Nicholas, a low expected to develop off of the southeast coast and a cold front
approaching from the northwest. That potential tropical system, which has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next 5 days, also brings a threat of rough surf and rip currents to beaches (including along the Outer Banks).
All three of these will concentrate moisture transport into North Carolina and South Carolina and provide on and off rain chances for much of the remainder of the period through Saturday. Details however remain in question.
The next named storm will be Odette followed by Peter.

Over 30 inches of rain were measured in a few North Carolina locations, exceeding the highest single-storm rainfall amounts ever seen in this portion of the state. A station in Loris, SC recorded 23.63 inches rain, setting a new state tropical cyclone rainfall record for the state of South Carolina.
Record river flooding developed over the next several days along the Cape Fear, Northeast Cape Fear, Lumberton, and Waccamaw Rivers, destroying roads and damaging thousands of homes and businesses. Currently, National Hurricane Center is forecasting a 50% chance of development which the GFS is currently progging to be offshore of the North Carolina coast Thursday night.
An area of low pressure is expected to form by midweek a couple of hundred miles north of the southeastern or central Bahamas as a tropical wave interacts with an upper-level trough. Some gradual development of this system is possible thereafter, and a tropical depression could form later this week while the system moves north-northwestward or northward across the western Atlantic.
Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.
That being said, that isn`t the only area of the tropics we need to be watching because moisture from Tropical Storm Nicholas off of the Texas coast could also push across the Deep South and increase chances of precipitation late week int...

- Hurricane Ida landfall: Live cameras in New Orleans and Baton Rogue, Lousiana
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- Hurricane Ida, a dangerous Category 4 hurricane, is making landfall in Lousiana.
Ida's rapid strengthening appears to have leveled off within the
past hour or so. NOAA and Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter
aircraft that have been in the storm this morning have reported
peak flight-level winds of 146 to 148 kt between 8000 and
10000 ft, and believable SFMR winds around 130 kt. Based on
these observations, the initial wind speed remains 130 kt for this
advisory. The central pressure appears to have bottomed out around
929 mb, and the latest dropsonde in the eye from the Air Force
plane supports a minimum pressure of 933 mb. Ida's satellite and
radar presentation is very impressive, as the 15-nm-wide eye is
very well-defined and surrounded by a ring of intense convection.
Within the past hour or so, there is evidence in radar imagery of a
secondary eyewall, and this has likely caused Ida's i...

- Description
- The forecast track of Henri remains near the northeast coast of the U.S. this weekend and early next week, and the risks of storm surge, wind, and rain impacts in portions of the northeastern U.S. and Atlantic Canada remains a distinct possibility.
Gusty winds, rough surf, and rip tides are possible along the Carolina beaches of North Carolina and South Carolina as Henri passes offshore.
Interests in these areas should closely follow the progress of Henri and check for updates to the forecast.
Swells from Henri will begin to reach much of the east coast of the U.S. and Atlantic Canada by the end of the week and continue through the weekend. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.
The Carolina Weather Group's Jared Smith looks at the probability forecast for Henri from his studio in Charleston, South Carolina.
