This animation from NASA shows what the Artemis-1 mission will look like, including the rocket launch, orbit around the moon, and return to Earth.
With Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon, using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before. We will collaborate with commercial and international partners and establish the first long-term presence on the Moon. Then, we will use what we learn on and around the Moon to take the next giant leap: sending the first astronauts to Mars.
WHY WE ARE GOING TO THE MOON
We’re going back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new generation of explorers: the Artemis Generation. While maintaining American leadership in exploration, we will build a global alliance and explore deep space for the benefit of all.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has produced the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date. Known as Webb’s First Deep Field, this image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 is overflowing with detail.
Thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared – have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This slice of the vast universe covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground.
This deep field, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), is a composite made from images at different wavelengths, totaling 12.5 hours – achieving depths at infrared wavelengths beyond the Hubble Space Telescope’s deepest fields, which took weeks.
The image shows the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago. The combined mass of this galaxy clust...

Excessive heat will create dangerous weather conditions across North Carolina and South Carolina this week. A heat wave will impact the Carolinas through Friday.
The high temperatures, combined with the humidity, will push the heat index over 100 degrees. The heat index is a measure of what the temperature outside really feels like.
Weather this hot will make it hard for our bodies to cool down. With the proper ability to perspire, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are possible. Be safe and practice health precautions.
Everyone should practice weather safety by remaining indoors, out of the sun, and continued hydration. Be sure to check on your neighbors, friends, and family.
In addition to the heat, afternoon thunderstorms could be strong-to-severe. While these storms are expected to be scattered, isolated storms could bring damaging wind. Overall, rain chances stay low. W...

- Thunderstorms are capable of reaching the tropopause: the boundary between the lowest layer of the atmosphere in which we live (the troposphere) and the layer immediately above (the stratosphere). Wednesday marks the start of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. A tropical disturbance near the Yucatan Peninsula could become this year's first named storm. If named, it would become Alex.
The tropical disturbance is expected to move over Florida before bringing the possibility of rough surf, rip currents, and erosion to the coasts of both North Carolina and South Carolina this weekend.
The storm system, regardless of strength, will remain offshore thanks to a cold front advancing across the United States. However that same cold front brings a marginal (tier 1 out of 5) risk of severe weather to coastal Carolina Friday. These storms will be powered by continued hot temperatures across the Southeast. The main severe weather threat Friday will be damaging winds, lightning, and heavy rain for locations including, but not limited to, Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Wilmington and the Outer Banks.<...

- The 2022 hurricane season starts next week and both NOAA’s National Hurricane Center and the researchers at Colorado State University are calling for an above-normal hurricane season.
Our guest this week, is Dr. Phil Klotzbach, one of the acclaimed CSU Tropical Weather and Climate Research team. Their tropical outlook, issued early each spring, is a leader in forecasting the tropics.
Klotzbach explains how current La Niña conditions and average sea surface temperatures has led them to forecast 19 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes.
A separate outlook published this week by the National Weather Service, foresees a similar season: with 14-21 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-6 major hurricanes.

At least two homes along North Carolina's Outer Banks have been washed out to sea because of a strong coastal storm in the Atlantic Ocean.
This is the second home, located at 24265 Ocean Drive, to collapse along Ocean Drive in Rodanthe, North Carolina, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore confirmed Tuesday. Another home, home located at 24235 Ocean Dr, also collapsed.
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning. A storm off the Southeast of the United States is driving winds over 40 mph into the beaches of North Carolina. Harsh onshore winds and waves from the storm are causing overwash and erosion.
Crews are working around the clock to keep NC 12, the only road into and out of the coastal communities, clear of sand and water. Flooding of the roadway has been an ongoing problem.
Residents and tourists are asked to stay off the beach and out of homes along Ocean Drive. Storm damag...

Yet another round of severe thunderstorms is on the way for Friday afternoon and night. This event could be worse than the other severe storms this week.
A cold front moving into the near-summery air mass that we have in place across North Carolina and South Carolina will be the trigger for the storms. As a result, the National Weather SErvice's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has put most of the state at a level 2 of 5 'slight' risk for severe thunderstorms Friday.
All modes of severe weather are possible including tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, and isolated flash flooding.
Join the Carolina Weather Group as we break down the threats and timing across the Carolinas.

It's National Hurricane Preparedness with the start of the 2022 hurricane season less than a month away -- but should the hurricane season start earlier than June 1st? That's one of the questions we discuss with hurricane expert and meteorologist Michael Lowry during these never-before-seen moments from our 2021 interview with him.
Lowry, who previously worked at The Weather Channel, just announced he'll be joining WPLG-TV in Miami, Florida. When Lowry talked with the Carolina Weather Group in 2021, he was a strategic planner for FEMA's fourth district, which covers North Carolina, South Carolina, and much of the Deep South. One of the largest and most comprehensive severe storm field campaigns to date is taking place across the Southeast region of the United States, including in portions of the Carolinas.
The PERiLS tornado study, which stands for Propagation, Evolution, and Rotation in Linear Storms, will leverage dozens of remote sensing technology to study tornado-producing thunderstorms commonly called QLCS (or quasi-linear convective systems if you're playing scrabble).
Our guest this week is one of the scientists, Karen Kosiba.

Crew-4 is the fourth crew rotation flight of a U.S. commercial spacecraft under the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. The mission will send NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Robert Hines, and Jessica Watkins, and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti to the International Space Station for a rotation science expedition, living and working as part of what is expected to be a 7-member crew.
Lindgren and Hines were assigned to the Crew-4 mission in February 2021 and began working and training on SpaceX’s next-generation human spacecraft and for their stay aboard the space station. Cristoforetti was assigned to the mission in March 2021 and Watkins was added as the fourth crew member in November 2021.
The Crew-4 mission continues NASA’s efforts to restore and maintain American leadership in human spaceflight. Regular commercial crew rotation missions enable NASA to continue the important research an...
