- Prime Minister John Briceño has broken his silence on the demands made by the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB). Our newsroom has been informed that the Prime Minister instructed the Cabinet Secretary to write to the NTUCB today, informing the Congress that its letter and demands will be taken to Cabinet on Wednesday. The unions are expected to be advised of Cabinet’s position thereafter. The response came on the same day that the NTUCB’s deadline expired, and union member protested outside the Social Security office in Belize City this afternoon. The demonstration began at around twelve-fifteen this afternoon, during the employees’ lunch hour, and was led by NTUCB President Ella Waight. Before word of the Government’s response emerged, Waight said the Prime Minister’s silence had not gone unnoticed and that the unions were demanding clear answers.

The charge was dismissed this morning after a hotel representative confirmed that the outstanding amount had been paid in full through a criminal mediation agreement. Rampersad, who was represented by Attorney Kimberly Wallace of Lavender Chambers, exited the Belize City Magistrates’ Court shortly after midday. He first apologized to the court reporter whom he had treated disrespectfully during two previous court appearances. Rampersad also spoke about his treatment during his three months in prison. - The Belize Judiciary this morning honoured the life and service of the late Edmund Oliver Pennil during a Morning of Reflection at the main courtroom on Treasury Lane in Belize City.
The ceremony was held under the auspices of Chief Justice Louise Esther Blenman and brought together Pennil’s family, members of the legal profession and employees of the Judiciary. Pennil joined the public service in 1958 at only 15 years old, beginning his career at the General Registry. He later served as Deputy Registrar of the High Court and Supervisor of the General Registry before retiring in 2022, following an extraordinary 64 years of service.
Chief Justice Blenman was among those who paid tribute to Pennil and reflected on his lasting contribution to Belize’s justice system.
