- Description
- Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the war in Ukraine could have been prevented if Western allies had paid more attention to Russian President Vladamir Putin's increasing aggression and his annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Speaking exclusively to Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg alongside the former head of the military, Adm Sir Tony Radakin, Johnson said troops should be sent to peaceful regions in non-fighting roles.
"There is no logical reason that I can see why we shouldn't send peaceful ground forces there to show our support, our constitutional support for a free, independent Ukraine," the former PM said.
Johnson and Radakin also recalled the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, and the early days of the war, when the decision to support President Volodymyr Zelensky was made.

- Children have been "weaponised" by both sides of a toxic debate about transgender rights, the author of a government review into the treatment of children and young people questioning their gender has said.
Dr Hilary Cass told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg "people at the extremes" had caused "quite a lot of distress for young people".
She also suggested "unrealistic images and expectations on social media" had misled children, and that if some young people had "taken more time" they might not have pursued medical treatments.
Her 2024 review found gender medicine had been operating on "shaky foundations" when it came to evidence for medical treatment.
The review was commissioned after concerns about the treatment of growing numbers of children and young people with worries about their gender, particularly at the Tavistock Clinic in London.

- Mischa Anouk Smith, Marie Claire Features Editor, spoke to the BBC's Politics Live about women who want to have children but don't have the economic means to start families.
"Childcare costs are exorbitant, we've got one of the worst paternity leave policies in Europe, and maternal care is in danger... on top of that, one in four British mothers are pushed out of the workforce," Mischa says.
It comes as 2026 could see a "tipping point" where the number of deaths in the UK are greater than the number of births, according to the Resolution Foundation.
In the studio, Labour MP Perran Moon, Reform UK MP Danny Kruger, and Financial Times journalist Miranda Green debate this issue with presenter Vicki Young.
