- How Eurovision's Israel debate could reshape the contest | Global News Podcast

- Description
- There has been an international backlash against Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest - one of the world's biggest entertainment events - fueled by concerns over the war in Gaza.
Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, Iceland and the Netherlands are boycotting this year's competition. And the Israeli contestant Noam Bettan was booed by some members of the audience on Tuesday, as he secured a spot in the final.
Israel's Minister of Culture and Sports Miki Zohar has called the boycotts "shameful and hypocritical", saying Eurovision is "a celebration of music, culture and brotherhood between nations, not a platform for scoring political points."
All of this comes as Eurovision faces questions about its voting system, and the degree to which geopolitics may influence the contest's outcome.
We ask the BBC's music correspondent Mark Savage how the row over Israel's inclusion could reshape Eurovision.

Both sides are looking to stabilise the volatile China - US relationship. The talks are likely to centre on how to balance competition in trade and technology. Trump may also be seeking President Xi’s help to end the war in Iran. China will feel it has the upper hand as it heads to the negotiating table with a war-weakened Washington.
Our China Correspondent Laura Bicker has been to the futuristic city of Chongqing in China to explore the country’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of the talks.

Meanwhile more than 100 MPs are understood to have signed a statement backing the PM, saying "this is no time for a leadership contest". Adam, Chris and Alex reflect on whether Starmer can survie the pressure.

- Description
- Israel has approved a new law to impose the death penalty and public trials on people involved in the Hamas-led attacks of 7th October, 2023. It was passed unanimously in Israel's parliament - the Knesset.
"May everyone see how the State of Israel is a sovereign state which knows how to hold those who harmed it to account," said Yulia Malinovsky, an opposition politician who co-sponsored the bill.
Israeli human rights groups have spoken out against the new law, opposing the principle of capital punishment but also warning against "show trials" based on confessions allegedly extracted under torture. The Israeli government denies accusations of widespread torture asserting that it complies with standards of international law.
This is the second time in a matter of weeks that Israel has approved a capital punishment bill. In April, the Knesset passed a law that would in effect make the death penalty the default sentence for Palestinians convicted o...

- Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.
Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.
No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.

- Trump: ceasefire is “on life support” and Iran peace plan is "garbage” | BBC News
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- President Trump has said the month-long ceasefire between the US and Iran is on "massive life support". He described Iran’s response to US proposals to end the war as “garbage” and “totally unacceptable”, telling reporters: "That piece of garbage they sent us - I didn't even finish reading it,"
Iran laid out its demands to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a counter-offer sent to the US on Sunday. Esmail Baghaei, a foreign ministry spokesperson for Iran, responded to Trump’s comments, saying Tehran's proposals were "responsible" and "generous".
Tehran's offer includes an immediate end to the war on all fronts - a reference to the continued Israeli attacks against Iran-supported Hezbollah in Lebanon - a halt to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and guarantees of no further attacks on Iran, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency. It also reportedly includes a demand for compensation for war damage and an emphasis on ...
