- Andy Burnham will attempt to return to the Commons as an MP, after Wes Streeting resigned as health secretary, saying he had lost confidence in UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's leadership.
Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, said he would ask to run for Labour in Makerfield after Labour MP Josh Simons said he would resign to make way for him.
Any candidate in a Labour leadership contest to replace Starmer must be an MP.
Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting called for a broad debate about what comes next but did not say he would run for leader.

- Description
- China’s President Xi Jinping has told Donald Trump that his country wants a partnership with the US, not rivalry.
He was speaking at a state banquet in honour of the US President, who is on a two day visit to China.
The two leaders earlier held trade talks, with Trump saying the two countries had "the world's most consequential economic relationship".
The White House described the meeting as "highly productive". Trump, speaking at the Great Hall of the People, called it potentially "the biggest summit ever".
President Xi said previous trade negotiations between the two countries had delivered "progress", according to China's foreign ministry, but also delivered a stark warning on Taiwan, saying: "If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict."
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jane Hill and Sarah Smith.

- Does China have the upper hand over Trump? | Global News Podcast

- Description
- President Donald Trump is in Beijing for the first time in nearly a decade, attending a summit with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping. President Trump has struck a positive tone, saying that Mr Xi has offered to help open the Strait of Hormuz through talks with Iran. And Mr Xi told a state banquet that the US and China should be partners.
But Celia Hatton, Global News Podcast presenter and Asia analyst, says there were darker undertones to Xi Jinping's words - which emphasised that China was America's equal, and that the two nations were capable of conflict.
Relations between the rival superpowers have been under strain, due to tit-for-tat tariffs, a simmering trade war, and concerns over Taiwan - a US ally and self-governed island that China claims as its territory.
So, who has the upper hand? And how does Beijing view the future of its relationship with Washington?
New episodes of the Global News Podcast are published twice a day. You...

- Cuba has completely run out of diesel and fuel oil, the country's Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy has said.
In an interview with state-run media, de la O Levy said there were limited amounts of gas available, but that Cuba's energy system was in a "critical" state as a US-led blockade of oil to the country squeezed supply.
Protests against power cuts broke out in the capital Havana on Wednesday, with roads blocked with piles of burning rubbish as well as banged pots and shouts of anti-government slogans.
It marks the biggest single night of demonstrations in Havana since the energy crisis took hold in January.

In a letter to the prime minister, which Streeting published online, he says "where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift".
Earlier Chancellor Rachel Reeves told BBC Breakfast that a contest would "plunge the country into chaos".
The UK PM is battling to save his job after four ministers quit and dozens of Labour MPs urged him to resign after last week's heavy election losses.

- Description
- President Trump has been greeted in Beijing with pomp and pageantry on a two day visit to China.
He’s due to hold a high-stakes summit with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. The leaders of the global superpowers are expected to discuss tariffs, competition over technology, the war in Iran, and America's relationship with Taiwan.
The trip had originally been scheduled for March but was postponed because of the US and Israel's war in Iran, a conflict that continues to unsettle the global economy.
Trump was greeted on the red carpet by Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng, one of China's top leaders. The move is being read as a show of respect for the US president from Beijing, after a lower-level leader received Trump on his last visit.
A brass brand and flag wavers holding Chinese and American flags chanted "welcome welcome, a warm welcome", as the president gave his signature fist pump to the large greeting party, standing by the d...

- Description
- During US President Donald Trump two-day visit to China, the global superpowers are expected to discuss tariffs, competition over technology, the war in Iran, and America's relationship with Taiwan.
Trade between the two countries has declined in recent years amid an escalating tariff war and other restrictions. The war in Iran is also expected to be high on the agenda as Trump meets Xi.
China relies heavily on Iran for oil, and the exports have effectively been cut off as ships are unable to navigate the Strait of Hormuz. The two nations also have an alliance dating back decades.
Shortly before departing for China, Trump told reporters in Washington he and Xi will have a "long talk" about Iran, but insisted "I don't think we need any help" in resolving the conflict.
