The killing sparked several days of protests in the community—and prompted a militarized crackdown by police.
Fault Lines goes to Ferguson to witness the demonstrations and the subsequent heavy-handed police reaction—and to ask wider questions about why Michael Brown was shot and why the authorities' response was so disproportionate.

- The election of the first black president offered hope to millions of African-Americans across the United States. But have four years of an Obama presidency seen actual positive change for black communities in inner cities?
Nearly 30 years of drug policies have perpetuated cycles of violence and economic repression in U.S. inner cities—especially in poor, minority neighborhoods. While the "war on drugs" rages in the U.S., there is some political consensus it is failing. White House officials have even indicated a policy shift away from incarceration and toward a public health strategy.
In Baltimore, one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S., the police reframed their "war on drugs" as a "war on guns." The rhetoric may have changed, but critics say nothing else has. Concentrated law enforcement has resulted in high levels of incarceration among young African-Americans and the criminalization of entire communities.

Though only an hour from Kabul, armed Taliban fighters walk openly in the streets, and government and Western forces are entirely absent. Khaja bears witness to the parallel administration the Taliban has built in Charkh and hears testimony from the population—including from the families of civilian casualties of Afghan National Army bombings.
Khaja is the first Western journalist to film a Taliban Sharia court, where he witnesses a case in which the defendant is a Taliban member and the outcome is surprising. He also visits local boys and girls schools run in concert with the Taliban.
"This is Taliban Country" shows a defiant Taliban determined to continue attacking Afghan National Army bases and keep control of the region.

- In 2013 there were nearly 40,000 foreign contract workers on bases in the U.S. military’s Central Command. Hailing primarily from India and Nepal, these laborers serve American troops in facilities in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere. These “third country nationals” are willing to travel to a warzone for the promise of a high salary.
In its investigation, Fault Lines finds that these laborers regularly end up deceived and indebted, victims of local recruiters who charge thousands of dollars for a chance to be placed in one of these jobs, and labor traffickers who profit from military contracts.
Has the US military come to rely on an indentured workforce? Fault Lines retraces the journey that these workers often make – from villages in India to labor camps in Dubai – to examine how the U.S. staffs its bases during wartime.

In the halls of Congress the immigration reform debate remains at a standstill, and a civil disobedience movement has spread across the country pushing for Obama to halt deportations until reform passes.
