- The Town of Canton is turning over a new leaf as the demolition of its Town Hall and Fire Department buildings wraps up.
After being flooded multiple times during Ivan/Frances, Fred and Helene, the departments that once called the two buildings home are relocating.
"We do need to find a permanent home, you know, for our administration and more importantly, our safety," said Zeb Smathers, Mayor of Canton.
Smathers says the departments' new homes have already been found.
"Renovations are underway across Canton, renovating an old Champion Credit Union building to be our town hall, another bank building to be our police department, and we are off the races in designing and taking the first steps in constructing a brand new fire department for our firefighters," Smathers said.
As renovations and construction are underway, the departments are being housed in temporary trailers on Summer Street. The fire department is soon heading to t...

- A business owner who had to move because of the I-26 Connector Project has found a new home for her business.
She says this is thanks to a collaboration with another local business.
"I’m comfortable in change, because change excites me," said Veronica Carlson, the Owner of Asheville Kava X Coffee. "I've been out of operation for about a month and a half now."
She says since the relocation notice, she's had to adapt.
"I can't say I was devastated. It was like a punch, but a punch to action. It's like, okay, time to shift," said Carlson.
And her customers weren't happy to see her go.
"It was just a shame that I discovered it right as they were tearing it down practically," said Rory Killian.
North Carolina Department of Transportation estimated there would be about 80 relocations due to the I-26 Connector Project.
"The DOT covered the move," said Carlson. "They provide up to $...

- The Trump administration is directing changes to federal childhood vaccine policy that would place greater emphasis on individual risk and shared decision-making between parents and doctors.
A new executive order divides vaccines into three categories: those recommended for all children, those recommended for certain high-risk groups and those left to shared decision-making between families and their physicians. The order does not by itself rewrite the childhood immunization schedule followed by pediatricians, with changes to federal recommendations still requiring action through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Morris, the executive director of Christmount, says he's been in regular contact with Buncombe County as they work to develop what will be the campus's latest addition, a residential lodge for campers with special needs.
In July, Morris received an email that appeared to come from Buncombe County.
"When I got this email, it was just like any other email," said Morris. "And they had the billing information correct. They had my name, the organization name, our address."
"So, it all sounds, you know, legit," Morris said.
But it wasn't.
It was a scam attempt meant to impersonate government.

- The birthplace of former North Carolina Gov. Zebulon Baird Vance is offering visitors a chance to explore one of the state’s most controversial historical figures — and the times he lived in.
Vance was born in 1830 at Reems Creek in what is now northern Buncombe County. He went on to become the only North Carolina governor to serve two terms during two very different periods in the state’s history: first as governor of the Confederate state of North Carolina during the Civil War, and later as governor of North Carolina after the war.
But Vance’s legacy is complicated. He was well educated and known as a powerful and persuasive speaker who could connect with both wealthy and working-class audiences. He was also born into a family that enslaved at least 34 people between 1790 and 1865.
The property was once a plantation where the Vance family grew corn and raised hogs. That agricultural operation helped build the family's wealth and prominen...

The changes come as the debate over the technology continues locally, just days after residents spoke out about Flock cameras operating across Henderson County and an online petition calling for their removal gained more than 1,000 signatures.
Flock Safety announced new restrictions this week following reports of law enforcement officers around the country misusing its license plate reader network. Among the changes, the company says it will reduce how long it stores license plate data from 30 days to seven days and requires agencies to provide a specific reason and case number or incident number when conducting searches.
The company is also introducing additional auditing and oversight measures aimed at identifying potentially improper searches.

- Philadelphia police say digital evidence recovered from the home of 44-year-old Eugene Horsch appears to show two women who have been missing for years dead inside the residence. Investigators identified the women as Maribel Fresses, missing since 2018, and Gabriela Amerondo, missing since 2012, but their bodies have not been found.
Former FBI agent JJ Klaver says the absence of bodies makes the investigation especially difficult because authorities lack an easy DNA source to compare with forensic evidence from the home. Police have also recovered more than 20 containers of an unknown substance from an alleged basement lab, five urns containing cremated remains, zip ties and a handwritten note referencing serial killer Ted Bundy.
Investigators have reportedly examined only a small portion of the digital evidence and continue searching the home for forensic links to other victims or missing people. Klaver says a witness coming forward could help break the case ...

Mangione, a Maryland man accused of fatally shooting the CEO of a health insurance company, pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges Friday.
Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani discussed what could happen next during an interview with 7News anchor Megan Clarke, saying Mangione’s attorneys are expected to argue that New York’s double jeopardy protections prevent the state murder prosecution from moving forward.

Parallel federal and state prosecutions generally do not violate the U.S. Constitution’s Double Jeopardy Clause because the federal government and states are considered separate sovereigns.

The housing authority is placing a tarp over the south-side wall, aiming to keep water out.

My hope is that our democracy will never be the same," Abdul El-Sayed said.
Last week’s narrow win by Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic primary race for Senate in Michigan is now top of mind for the party.

Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel, 52, is facing murder charges and many felony charges connected to the deaths of her daughter, Leela Jean Livis, and Michael “Misha” Schmidt.
Investigators allege Casper-Leinenkugel poisoned a bottle of wine during a family Thanksgiving gathering in 2025, killing Livis. Prosecutors also accuse her of poisoning Schmidt, who died in 2007.
They claim she attempted to kill her other daughter, Mia Lacey, and Lacey’s boyfriend, Richard Pegg, during the Thanksgiving gathering.
On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, the defense filed a motion asking a judge to separate the 2007 murder charge from the charges stemming from the 2025 case.
Casper-Leinenkugel’s attorney, Paul Bidwell, told News 13 there's not enough evidence.

The Asheville Gallery of Art is the longest-standing fine arts gallery in downtown Asheville. Established in 1988, the gallery features a diverse group of artists, including both emerging and established artists.
Gallery President Margie Kluska and Vice President Carol Fetty say the gallery has weathered many challenges over the years, most recently the devastation caused by Helene.

That decline had a direct impact on the gallery. Kluska and Fetty say roughly 80% to 90% of the gallery’s sales come from tourists.

The proposed hospital would have an emergency department and a staff of nearly 400. UNC Health hopes to open the facility in about six years if approved for the beds license.

- Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded a briefing Tuesday on the alleged Iranian threats that prompted President Donald Trump to deceive the public by secretly switching planes last month.
The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump hid in a catering truck to board a plane after entering a different one in Turkey, the Middle Eastern country that shares a border with Iran and which hosted the July NATO summit attended by the president and other allied leaders. Trump confirmed Tuesday he changed planes but didn't explain the threat he said prompted the covert action.
"The Senate should be immediately briefed on the Iranian threats against the President, the extraordinary measures taken to get him out of Turkey, any risks posed to U.S. personnel, and any threat to the homeland," Schumer said in a statement. "It is unacceptable that Congress was kept in the dark and instead learned about this serious threat through press reports."

- Description
- Hunter Biden has returned to the public eye with a string of high-profile and viral interviews, fueling renewed speculation about whether the controversial figure could have a political future.
In recent weeks, Biden has appeared in long-form conversations with prominent voices, including some who have criticized him in the past. He has been a frequent target of conservative media and political figures over his laptop, his business dealings and his struggles with addiction, but he has now been sitting down with some of those same people and, at times, finding common ground.
On “The Tucker Carlson Show” on Monday, host Tucker Carlson said, “I advocated for all kinds of things that I now regret advocating for.”
“Particularly the things that you said about me,” Biden replied as the two laughed.
Carlson added he should have been more understanding about Biden's battles with addiction.

- Voters in several states are heading to the polls Tuesday in a series of closely watched primary elections that could shape both parties' strategies heading into the November midterms.
The contests include Democratic primaries in Wisconsin and Michigan, where progressive and self-described socialist candidates are competing for statewide nominations, as well as Republican races in South Carolina and Minnesota.
Speaking with The National News Desk, The Daily Signal national correspondent Tony Kinnett said Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary is one of the races drawing the most national attention.
"We're seeing them in battleground states like Wisconsin," Kinnett said of socialist candidates. "It definitely changes the conversation about the general election."
Kinnett argued that many of the voters propelling progressive candidates through Democratic primaries differ from the broader coalition needed to win a statewide general election.

- A petition calling for the removal of Flock Safety cameras in Henderson County has gained hundreds of signatures as some residents raise concerns about privacy, data collection and the growing use of the technology.
Henderson County resident Austin Rhodes started the online petition, which had 937 signatures and more than 500 shares as of Monday afternoon.
“I'm trying to get as much attention to the subject as possible so that way change can be made in the county,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes said his ultimate goal is to have the cameras removed from the county.
“We've had successful policing here as long as the county's been here and have the argument that we can't do our jobs effectively without it. That's a silly and moot point," he said.
According to DeFlock, an online source that maps automated license plate reader cameras across the U.S., there are 39 Flock cameras in Henderson County.

- Tightening its grip on a key maritime trade route, Iran issued a list of demands for the United States to meet before shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz can resume. All of the demands appear to be non-starters for the White House.
Iranian leaders said the United States must lift its blockade on Iranian ports, withdraw American forces surrounding Iran, lift sanctions, unfreeze Iranian assets, refrain from using insulting and threatening language toward Iran, and pay Iran for damages caused by the war.
In a social media post Monday, President Donald Trump said the last demand on that list was never brought up during past talks with Iran.
"But it is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous, as led initially by General Soleimani, including the families of those killed on the USS Cole, and tho...
