- Description
- Sagebrush is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world—vanishing at a rate comparable to the Amazon rainforest. Once spanning more than 234,000 square miles, only half remains today. This habitat is home to over 350 species that depend on sagebrush for survival, making its preservation critical for biodiversity.
In Wyoming, innovative programs are working to restore sagebrush landscapes damaged by mining and development, including a joint effort by the Bureau of Land Management, Department of Environmental Quality, Institute for Applied Ecology, and the Department of Corrections in an attempt to reverse the trend of declining sagebrush across the landscape, helping to protect important habitat for many species of plants and animals. From reclaiming the Andrea Hunter Mine to the Sagebrush in Prisons Project, where inmates grow and plant sagebrush seedlings, these efforts highlight the power of community, ecology, and second chances.
