- Description
- Trapper’s Point, just west of Pinedale, Wyoming, has been a crucial interaction site between humans and pronghorn for at least 8,000 years. In 1986, archaeologists excavated this ridge—awed by the discovery of ancient camps, stone tools, and massive pronghorn bone assemblages dating back to 7,200 BP, 5,500 BP, and 4,300 BP.
More than an archaeological goldmine, this ridge proved to be a natural migration corridor: a bottleneck where pronghorn and mule deer funnel between seasonal ranges. When US 191 bisected it, traffic & collisions skyrocketed—endangering wildlife and humans alike.
After installing wildlife overpasses and underpasses with fencing along a 12‑mile stretch, crossings exceeded 85,000 in three years—with pronghorn using overpasses 90% of the time. Collisions dropped by over 80%.

The Quebec 01 Missile Alert Facility, now a Wyoming State Historic Site, was once the alert and launch control center for the Peacekeeper missile system—the most powerful nuclear missile ever deployed by the United States. Decommissioned in 2005 and restored using authentic military equipment, the site offers a rare glimpse into the operations and infrastructure of nuclear defense at the height of the Cold War.
In this episode, Alexis Pratt, site superintendent with Wyoming State Parks, walks viewers through the facility’s unique history—from its construction in 1962 to its current role as an educational and historical landmark. You’ll also see the underground launch capsule 50 feet below the surface, designed like a submarine and sealed by an 18-inch blast door.
