- Description
- Tampa Bay charter captains Jordan Sandlin, 35, and Nick Spiridis, 50, saw a shark they say was a juvenile great white off Honeymoon Island on Dec. 27.
Great white sharks have been found in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly in the winter months when waters are cooler, but they’re rarely seen this close to shore.
“Pictures don’t do justice at all, but for me, to be there ... it was a great white,” Spiridis said.
But what do the experts say? Generally, they agree.
Hear from them and read more about the captains’ encounter: https://www.tampabay.com/news/environment/2025/12/30/juvenile-great-white-shark-honeymoon-island/

- Description
- At the Florida Aquarium’s sea turtle hospital, staff and volunteers worked long days and weekends, trying to help turtles heal so they could send them back home.
Climate change, pollution and development have caused more than 1,000 sea turtles to wash up on Florida beaches this year.
Rescuing one turtle costs about $15,000. But environmentalists say you can’t put a price on saving a species.
We spent six months inside the aquarium’s Apollo Beach rehab center as workers confronted a common diagnosis: cold-stunned turtles.

- What was once a sea of parking lots and industrial land surrounding the Lightning’s arena is now known as Water Street, a bustling Tampa neighborhood filled with offices, apartments, restaurants and more.
The nearly $4 billion transformation of the area kickstarted by former Bolts owner Jeff Vinik took over a decade. But it’s been a rousing success, attracting new transplants and investors to the city.
Efforts to launch similar developments have been met with skepticism. Some longtime residents question the direction Tampa is moving, fearing rising housing costs and increased traffic.
Take a closer look at Water Street and the role it plays in the city’s future:

- Rubio takes on two top national security roles after embracing Trump's 'America First' vision

- Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been thrown into two top national security jobs at once as President Donald Trump presses forward with his top-to-bottom revamp of U.S. foreign policy, upending not only longstanding policies that the former Florida senator once supported but also the configuration of the executive branch.
Trump's appointment of Rubio to temporarily replace Mike Waltz as national security adviser is the first major leadership shake-up of the nascent administration, but Waltz's removal had been rumored for weeks — ever since he created a Signal group chat and accidentally added a journalist to the conversation where top national security officials shared sensitive military plans.
So, just over 100 days into his tenure as America’s top diplomat, Rubio now becomes just the second person to hold both positions. He follows only the late Henry Kissinger, who served as both secretary of state and national security adviser for two years under Pre...

- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis joined officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Thursday to tout an operation that authorities say netted 1,120 immigration arrests in less than a week.
The arrests were part of an interagency statewide effort called “Operation Tidal Wave” that included federal, state and local involvement.
At a press conference announcing the arrests on Thursday in Miramar, DeSantis vowed that his state would continue to lead in immigration enforcement efforts, in line with priorities set by the administration of President Donald Trump.
He said that state agencies such as the National Guard were “willing and able to take it to the next level,” including by expanding detention capacity, and even have National Guardsmen “serve as immigration judges” to speed processing of detained immigrants.
Meanwhile, Larry Keefe, the Executive Director of Florida’s newly created State Board of Immigration Enforc...

- TIERRA VERDE — To get 250 feet above the mangroves while flying at least 40 miles an hour, you don’t need a runway. Or even a pilot’s license.
With the emerging technology of ultralight all-electric aircraft, all that’s required is a patch of flat land and a sizable sense of adventure — plus two weeks of required training. And some disposable income, of course.
That’s what a Silicon Valley company called Pivotal showed off earlier this month when it launched multiple test flights from a neighborhood in Tierra Verde, a grouping of barrier islands in Pinellas County. These vehicles are called electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, and are generally considered the next frontier of EVs. Although they don’t have any wheels or landing gear, these craft are sometimes called “flying cars” because the industry aims for them to one day to be just that — used for people’s commutes, joining traffic patterns in the sky of similar v...

- Global coral bleaching has now hit 84% of ocean's reefs in biggest-ever event

- Description
- Harmful bleaching of the world's coral has grown to include 84% of the ocean's reefs in the most intense event of its kind in recorded history, the International Coral Reef Initiative announced Wednesday.
It's the fourth global bleaching event since 1998, and has now surpassed bleaching from 2014-17 that hit some two-thirds of reefs, said the ICRI, a mix of more than 100 governments, non-governmental organizations and others. And it's not clear when the current crisis, which began in 2023 and is blamed on warming oceans, will end.
“We may never see the heat stress that causes bleaching dropping below the threshold that triggers a global event,” said Mark Eakin, executive secretary for the International Coral Reef Society and retired coral monitoring chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Last year was Earth’s hottest year on record, and much of that is going into oceans. The average annual sea surface temperature of o...
