- The mother of a 14-year-old Missouri boy who was killed while riding a 430-foot drop-tower ride at a #Florida amusement park says her son's death was preventable.
#TyreSampson's parents sued its owner, manufacturer and landlord on Monday, claiming they were negligent and failed to provide a safe amusement ride.
Tyre's mother, Nekia Dodd, said at a news conference in St. Louis Tuesday that the ride in #Orlando should be taken down completely as it poses "too much of a risk."
The lawsuit says the defendants failed to warn Sampson about the risks of someone his size using the ride. He was 6-foot-2-inches and weighed 380 pounds.
An attorney for the ride's owner, Orlando Slingshot, said the company was continuing to cooperate with state investigators into what happened. "We reiterate that all protocols, procedures and safety measures provided by the manufacturer of the ride were followed," attorney Trevor Arnold said in an emailed statemen...

The outspoken #Tesla CEO, the world's wealthiest person, has said he wants to buy Twitter because he thinks it's not living up to its potential as a platform for "free speech."
He says it needs to be transformed as a private company in order to build trust with users and do better at serving what he calls the "societal imperative" of free speech.
Twitter said it will become a privately held company after the sale is closed.
Musk describes himself as a "free-speech absolutist," although he hasn't been exactly clear what he means by that.
He acknowledged that Twitter would have to abide by national laws governing speech in markets around the world.
Musk himself, though, regularly blocks social media users who have criticized him or his company and has used the platform to bully reporters who have ...

The first group of 60 prospective jurors filed into Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer's courtroom for what is expected to be a two-month process to pick 12 panelists plus eight alternates. Court officials say 1,500 candidates or more could be brought before Scherer, prosecutors and Cruz's public defenders for initial screening.
Cruz, 23, sat between his attorneys, wearing a gray sweater and an anti-viral face mask, four sheriff's deputies sitting nearby. He spoke briefly, waiving his right to participate directly in the screening process. He pleaded guilty in October to the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, meaning the jury will only decide if he receives a death sente...

- Description
- Many species of birds are nesting and laying eggs nearly a month earlier than they did 100 years ago in the Chicago area and researchers believe climate change is behind it.
Those were among the findings in a new study published in the Journal of Animal Ecology.
Researchers compared recent observations with century-old eggs preserved in museum collections.
"We learned that birds in the Chicago region, at least some species, are nesting as much as 25 days earlier now than they were back in the early 1900s and late 1800s," says John Bates, curator of birds at Chicago's Field Museum and the study's lead author.
"This study was designed to basically look at whether or not bird species in the northeastern part of Illinois were changing their egg-laying dates over time."
The museum has 50,000 to 60,000 eggs in its collection dating from the 1870s to the 1920s.
The collection includes detailed information about exac...

- BMW has halted production at two German factories. Mercedes is slowing work at its assembly plants. Volkswagen, warning of production stoppages, is looking for alternative sources for parts.
For more than a year, the global auto industry has struggled with a disastrous shortage of computer chips and other vital parts that has shrunk production, slowed deliveries and sent prices for new and used cars soaring beyond reach for millions of consumers.
Now, a new factor — Russia's war against Ukraine — has thrown up yet another obstacle. Critically important electrical wiring, manufactured in Ukraine, is suddenly tough to get. With buyer demand high, materials scarce and the war causing new disruptions, vehicle prices are expected to head even higher well into 2023.
The war's damage to the industry has emerged first in Europe. But U.S. auto production is expected to suffer eventually, too, if Russian exports of metals — from palladium for catalyti...

- Description
- As the United States prepares to accept 100,000 refugees amid Russia's war in #Ukraine, existing communities in cities like Sacramento are already mobilizing to provide food, shelter and support to people fleeing their homes.
Few details are available so far from the federal government on when the formal resettlement process will begin and where people will go.
But Ukrainian networks in the U.S., including through churches, are already providing support to people entering the country through informal channels, including on visas that will eventually expire or by flying to Mexico and crossing over the border.
The Sacramento region is home to the highest concentration of Ukrainians in the country, with about 18,000 people, according to the Migration Policy Institute.
Seattle, the New York City area and Chicago are also hubs for Ukrainians.
The federal government has not yet provided details on where refugees will be resettled, but it's l...

- Longtime anti-death penalty advocate #LeaRodger says she is keenly aware of the realities facing her and her newlywed husband, #RichardGlossip, who she married this week inside the #Oklahoma State Penitentiary where he sits on death row.
But that's among the reasons Rodger, 32, a paralegal who has spent more than a decade advocating for an end to capital punishment, says she wed Glossip, 59, who already has narrowly escaped three separate execution attempts. He could be the next man Oklahoma puts to death after recently lifting a nearly seven-year moratorium brought up by mishaps in his case and others.
"For Rich, surviving three execution attempts, possibly facing a fourth, the one thing he's really taken away from that is: Don't take anything for granted ... really live in the moment," Rodger told The Associated Press before they wed Tuesday in a small ceremony inside the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
"I think both of us do a good job at that, an...

- Description
- President Joe #Biden on Tuesday signed a bill into law to make #lynching a federal hate crime, more than 100 years after such legislation was first proposed.
The Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act is named after the Black teenager whose killing in Mississippi in the summer of 1955 became a galvanizing moment in the civil rights era. His grieving mother insisted on an open casket to show everyone how her son had been brutalized.
Biden acknowledged the long delay during remarks in the Rose Garden to lawmakers, administration officials and civil rights advocates, stressing how the violent deaths of Black Americans were used to intimidate them and prevent them from voting simply because of their skin color.
"Lynching was pure terror to enforce the lie that not everyone, not everyone, belongs in America, not everyone is created equal," Biden said.
But the president stressed that forms of racial terror continue to exist in the U.S. — creating the nee...

- For 70 years a group of non-native moneys has made their home next to a South Florida airport runway, delighting visitors and becoming local celebrities.
About 40 small vervet monkeys live in a mangrove preserve next to Fort Lauderdale's international airport.
They are descendants of about a dozen who escaped from a roadside zoo in the late 1940s.
A group is working to preserve the monkeys, who are threatened by cars and inbreeding.
Missy Williams, a Lynn University science professor, has been studying the group since 2014.
Williams began studying monkeys while doing doctoral work at Florida Atlantic University, and stayed on.
The colony lives on spiders, ants, lizards, seeds and flowers — when not scrounging people food.
Florida wildlife officials often kill invasive species to protect native animals. But they tolerate the vervets, if they stay put.
The monkeys are local celebriti...

- The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol voted unanimously Monday night to hold former Trump advisers Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino in contempt of Congress for their monthslong refusal to comply with subpoenas.
The committee made their case that Navarro, former President Donald Trump's trade adviser, and Scavino, a White House communications aide under Trump, have been uncooperative in the congressional probe into the deadly 2021 insurrectionand as a result, are in contempt.
The recommendation of criminal charges now goes to the full House, where it is likely to be approved by the Democratic-majority chamber. Approval there would then send the charges to the Justice Department, which has the final say on prosecution.
At Monday's meeting, lawmakers made yet another appeal to Attorney General Merrick Garland, who has not yet made a decision to pursue the contempt charges the House set forward in December on former Whit...

- Description
- President Joe Biden said Monday that he would make "no apologies" and wasn't "walking anything back" after his weekend comment that Russian President Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power." The president also insisted he's not calling for regime change in Moscow.
"I was expressing the moral outrage that I felt toward this man," Biden said. "I wasn't articulating a policy change."
The president's jarring remark about Putin, which came at the end of a Saturday speech in Warsaw that was intended to rally democracies for a long global struggle against autocracy, stirred controversy in the United States and rattled some allies in Western Europe.
Biden on Monday rejected the idea that his comment could escalate tensions over the war in Ukraine or that it would feed Russian propaganda about Western aggression.
He said he was expressing an "aspiration" rather than a goal of American foreign policy.

It's a request from the president, from us, and it is a significant increase over last year's budget," Nelson said.
The Biden-Harris Administration Monday submitted to Congress President Biden's budget for fiscal year 2023.
Nelson spoke of the Artemis program and efforts to put Americans back on the moon.

- A 14-year-old boy fell to his death from a ride at an amusement park in Orlando, Florida, sheriff's officials said.
Sheriff's officials and emergency crews responded to a call late Thursday at Icon Park, which is located in the city's tourist district along International Drive. The boy fell from the Orlando Free Fall ride, which opened late last year.
He was taken to a hospital, where he died, sheriff's officials said. No additional details about the teen or the incident were immediately released.
"Our hearts are broken for that family of the young man and again we are going to do everything we can to work with the investigative authorities to get to the matter of this," said John Stine, sales director with the Slingshot Group, which owns the ride.
The Free Fall ride and an adjacent ride, the Sling Shot, have been closed indefinitely, Stine said. His company operates the two rides at Icon Park.

- More than 100 employees at Walt Disney Animal Studios in Burbank, California walked out of work Tuesday to protest CEO Bob Chapek's slow response in publicly criticizing Florida legislation that opponents dubbed as the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
The legislation awaiting Gov. Ron DeSantis' signature bars instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.
Even though only a small percentage of Walt Disney Co. workers participated in a walkout Tuesday, organizers felt they had won a moral victory with the company issuing a statement denouncing the anti-LGBTQ legislation that sparked employee outrage.
Throughout the day, pockets of employees staged demonstrations at various sites across the country, including near Orlando's Walt Disney World and Walt Disney Studios. According to a Disney official, there had been no interruptions in any operations as of midday Tuesday.

Lia Thomas, a transgender woman who swam for the University of Pennsylvania, won the event on Thursday by nearly two seconds.
The governor’s comments came at an unrelated news conference Tuesday in Wesley Chapel. Unprompted, DeSantis poured fuel on the raging national controversy over who should be allowed to participate in women’s sports.
“We need to stop allowing organizations like the NCAA to perpetuate frauds on the public, and that’s exactly what they’re doing,” DeSantis said.
