- Neighbors are calling a man a hero after he rescued a woman from a burning home in Plainfield Township.
Early Tuesday, a house on Rollaway Drive NE off of 7 Mile Road exploded in what the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) believes was an attempted murder-suicide.
Tim Johnson heard a loud boom at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.
He ran outside to see his neighbor's house engulfed in flames and called 911 right away, but didn't want to wait around and ran to the house.
When he got there, Johnson heard a woman yelling for help among the burning debris.
"She was walking and yelling 'help me, help me,'" Johnson said. "I tried to get to her, and the flames kept pushing me back and I kept falling."
A 17-year-old boy joined in to help Johnson pull the woman out of the flames.
"He seems like a nice young man," Johnson said. "You know I was dragging her out but it was quicker with him helping."

- A veterans organization hoping to expand services and donation collection efforts into West Michigan says repeated vandalism and theft involving its donation bins in southeast Michigan is creating financial setbacks and affecting efforts to help veterans and families in need.
Leaders with Veterans & America First Foundation say the problem has persisted for roughly a year and a half, with dozens of incidents involving donation bins being stolen, damaged or made unusable.
The organization says those bins collect clothing and shoe donations that eventually help fund services ranging from housing assistance and transportation support to helping veterans secure jobs and regain stability.
“In the span of that time, Paul’s organization has lost over 100 bins,” said Iman Kawas, who oversees placement and servicing of the bins for the organization. “About 70 disappeared and around 30 were vandalized.”

He says he has no hard feelings after spending decades in prison for a crime he didn't commit.
"I've got that and I can get on with my life," Titus said. "It's over with."
Titus, now 74, was accused of killing two hunters on his property outside Kalamazoo in 1990.
While investigators didn't initially suspect Titus, he was arrested for murdering Doug Estes and Jim Bennett in 2001, convicted after the case was reopened and given a life sentence.
Titus tried to get a new trial for more than 20 years before the Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan discovered police had also considered a different suspect.

Emergency officials lifted an evacuation order Monday for some of the people who live near a damaged tank containing a hazardous chemical in Southern California after temperatures inside the tank fell enough to eliminate the risk of a catastrophic explosion.
While there’s no longer a risk of a major explosion at the GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems plant in Garden Grove, there’s still a chance for a smaller blast or a fire, Orange County Fire Authority division chief Craig Covey said during a news conference.
An overnight evaluation of the tank containing 6,000 to 7,000 gallons (22,700 to 26,500 liters) of methyl methacrylate, which is highly flammable, showed a reduction of pressure inside the tank thanks to a crack that was discovered Sunday. About two-thirds — roughly 34,000 — of the evacuated residents can go home as a result, Covey said.

According to YWCA Kalamazoo, the legal challenge centers on provisions tied to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and policies involving immigrant communities.

- Description
- “As a young person you don’t ever think cancer is going to be part of your story,” said Shameka Taylor, a 39-year-old Kalamazoo resident who’s living with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer.
“At first I was angry. I was really angry,” she said. “Why me? Why did this happen? And then I had to stop and I had to think and I had to say, ‘Why not me?'”
Taylor was only 36 in August 2022 when she was diagnosed with Stage 3. The Colorectal Cancer Alliance says she’s not alone.
“People will say, ‘Oh, is it because of the food we eat or where we live or what we’re around?’ But we really don’t know why this alarming increase is happening,” explained Michael Sapienza, CEO of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.
Colorectal Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in people who are younger than 50, according to the Alliance, and as it is most screening guidelines recommend getting a colonoscopy once you turn 45.
