- Description
- This title for Michigan's newest Fab Five will look better in the trophy case than a time capsule.
Hard to be too picky — this new-age group of ballers in maize and blue showed they can win any which way.
The five fabulous transfers who make up coach Dusty May's starting lineup got down and dirty with the rest of the Wolverines to dig out the national championship on Monday. Michigan made only two 3-pointers all night but still muscled its way to a 69-63 victory over stingy, stubborn UConn.
Elliot Cadeau led the Wolverines with 19 points, including the team’s first 3, which came 7:04 into the second half. The second, from freshman Trey McKenney, came with 1:50 left and felt like a dagger, giving May's team — which had scored 90 points in five straight March Madness games leading to the final — a nine-point lead.
Though the shooting wasn’t great, this marked the fourth straight game in which Michigan has held its opponent to ...

- Description
- The City of Kalamazoo will not be accepting a $1.25 million federal grant that would have helped fund 10 new public safety officers for the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) due to uncertain stipulations tied to the funding.
The funding was offered through the 2025 Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program from the U.S. Department of Justice.
City Manager Malcolm Hankins pulled the item from Monday night’s city commission agenda at the start of the meeting, citing the need for additional review of the long-term implications of accepting the award.
"It also effectively means non-acceptance of the grant at this time," Hankins said.
The grant would have covered 75% of entry-level salaries and benefits for 10 new officers over three years, with the city required to retain those positions for at least a year after federal funding ended.
The total budget amendment requested of the commission was $1...

- A dramatic crash involving a gasoline tanker that erupted into flames shut down US-131 for nearly 12 hours over the weekend, leaving behind damaged infrastructure, unanswered questions, and a firsthand account from a driver who says he witnessed the crash unfold just yards ahead of him.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the crash near the I-196 interchange, and the Grand Rapids Police Department says the investigation remains ongoing. However, a witness, Tony Zaidel, believes a speeding flatbed truck carrying lumber may have played a critical role.
“I slowed down and got behind the tanker, and then this flatbed semi hauling lumber and a forklift went flying past us way too fast for conditions,” Zaidel said, describing heavy rain at the time of the crash. “He threw so much water on me I had to hit the brakes because I couldn’t see.”

Savannah Guthrie is coming back to NBC’s “Today” show Monday for the first time in more than two months since her mother’s disappearance, returning to a job she loves but is unsure how she’ll manage.
Guthrie acknowledged that she’s a changed person and that it’s hard to go forward not knowing what happened to Nancy Guthrie, who authorities believe was taken against her will from her Arizona home.
Despite an intense search involving thousands of federal and local officers and volunteers, there has been no sign of the 84-year-old mother of three since she was reported missing Feb. 1.
As part of a video message released by her New York church on Easter Sunday, Guthrie spoke about feeling “moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment.” But she said the resurrection is not fully celebrated “if we do not acknowledge the feelings of loss, pain, and yes, death.”

Connecticut is trying to become the first program since John Wooden’s UCLA behemoth of the 1960s and ‘70s to win three championships over a four-season span, while Michigan is trying to cap off a March Madness string of dominance, the likes of which were last seen by this very UConn program that won it all in 2023and ’24.

- Long before public libraries became a cornerstone of American communities, a group of women in Kalamazoo created their own access to books, and in doing so, helped shape the future of literacy in Michigan and beyond.
The Ladies' Library Association began as a small reading circle in the mid-1800s, when women had limited access to formal education. Members gathered in private homes, sewing while one woman read aloud, a quiet act that would grow into something much larger.
By 1852, the group opened Kalamazoo’s first circulating library, offering access to books through a subscription model. The effort not only filled a local gap, but also helped spark a broader movement.
At one point, more than 100 similar women-led library associations existed across Michigan, many of them laying the groundwork for the public library systems communities rely on today.
“This organization started informally in 1844,” said Sharon Carlson, a historia...

- Michigan marijuana industry files another lawsuit to stop 24% wholesale tax
- Date posted
- Description
- The tax marijuana dispensaries have been paying to buy wholesale has been in effect since January, and the industry's legal fight seeking to stop it has heated up again.
The initial lawsuit from the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association (MiCIA) filed last year is heading to trial in September, but late last week, the industry filed a new lawsuit against the Michigan Treasury.
They again claim the wholesale tax is unconstitutional. The treasury declined to comment.
The industry asserts the tax essentially functions as a sales tax, meaning the burden is unlawfully higher than the 6% sales tax cap.
When voters approved recreational use in 2018, they permitted a 10% excise tax, on top of the sales tax.
That excise tax goes to municipalities and tribes. The wholesale tax was approved in this year's budget with an aim of raising at least $400 million for roads.

- Weeks after a tornado tore through Three Rivers on March 6, the damage is still visible.
Inside Three Rivers Health Hospital, part of Beacon Health System, the story is also about what happened in the moments during and after the storm, and how close one situation came to turning deadly.
Del Eastes was not expecting severe weather when he arrived that afternoon. He came to the hospital because he was not feeling well, something he later learned required immediate attention.
“We decided to come to the hospital,” Eastes said. “Considering what the diagnostics revealed, it was the right thing to do at the time.”

- The officer who fatally shot Da'Quain Johnson in Grand Rapids Feb. 18 will not be charged, according to Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker.
In a press conference Thursday, Becker said the officer acted in self-defense, adding he cannot show the officer's decision to use deadly force in the shooting was "not honest and reasonable."
"Putting it another way, in terms of when a self-defense claim or defense of others claims is raised, I have to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt that they did not act in self-defense," Becker said. "Based on the facts and circumstances as I see them, I just cannot simply do that."

- Description
- Newly released video on Thursday provides a clearer picture of the events that led to Tiger Woods' suspected DUI arrest following a rollover crash on Jupiter Island.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office released body-worn camera footage from deputies who responded to the March 27 crash on South Beach Road.
Investigators say Woods attempted to pass a pickup truck towing a trailer, crossed over double solid lines, and struck the trailer, causing his SUV to flip onto its side.
According to a recently released probable cause affidavit, deputies reported multiple signs of impairment at the scene, including bloodshot and glassy eyes, dilated pupils, and lethargic movements.
The affidavit states that two pills later identified as hydrocodone were found loose in Woods’ pants pocket during his arrest.

- Description
- A hospital worker recovering from surgery related to her breast cancer ushered a patient to safety seconds before a tornado ravaged the Three Rivers, Michigan facility on March 6.
Del Eastes was not expecting severe weather when he arrived to Three Rivers Health Hospital that afternoon. He came to the hospital because he was not feeling well, something he later learned required immediate attention.
As he made his way inside, winds suddenly intensified.
Inside, patient access representative Abigail Hostetler had been monitoring weather alerts and helping move patients to safer areas of the building.
Staff had already begun clearing waiting areas and directing people away from the entrance when Eastes approached the building. Hostetler said she recognized him immediately from his years volunteering at the hospital’s snack bar.
Instead of taking cover, she went to meet him.
