- A local environmental organization will take natural avenues to control the spread of an invasive plant species this summer.
The Barry, Calhoun, Kalamazoo Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (BCKCISMA) will pilot the release of the mile-a-minute weevil (Rhinoncomimus latipes) to reduce the populations of the invasive mile-a-minute weed in Calhoun County.
The mile-a-minute weevil will serve as a biological control agent, which is an ecological and sustainable method of managing problematic plants by using their natural enemies instead of pesticides, BCKCISMA said in a release.
“We are still using herbicide on other sites, but this allows for those really dense populations that have been around for probably a while to, have that natural control, that natural predator, to keep that vine down,” said Sara Rahn, Invasive Species Coordinator.
When biological controls come from another country, they are extensively studied in lab...

At Friday’s ceremony, Hostetler called the recognition “an amazing opportunity.”
“This has been such an amazing experience, and I just feel so extremely thankful,” Hostetler said.

For Jacob Mahoney, that fateful day was his day off: February 24.

Mahoney had no idea what hit him.

"You know, you think the worst," Mahoney said.
Paramedics were there within seconds. The first thing out of Mahoney's mouth: save my son.

A fourth grader helped save her dad’s life using CPR she learned at school.
Fourth grader at Concord Ox Bow Elementary School, Magnolia Bridegroom, helped save her dad's life by performing CPR on him after he had a heart attack while shoveling snow this winter.
Magnolia's mom, Jamie, had started CPR on her dad when she started to get tired, that is when Magnolia jumped into action.
“So, I woke up to my mom yelling my name and when I went out there. I saw my dad laying on the ground on our front porch and my mom doing CPR with the 911 dispatcher on her phone and I was just trying to process a situation,” Bridegroom said.

- The way Michiganders interact with healthcare could look a lot different, as Senate Democrats propose a fundamental change in how the state handles the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Proponents of the effort say healthcare premiums are on the rise, from private plans to those offered under the ACA.
"What happens if we don't address this?" Health Policy Committee Chair Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) posited. "More people go uninsured, and it affects everybody."

- New LED warning signs have been installed at the end of Centennial Road near Coldwater Lake after multiple vehicles ended up in the water or on the ice at the same location for years.
The Branch County Road Commission said the new technology was added following concerns raised by the township, and after crash analysis identified the intersection as an area of concern.
"We’re starting to see a trend in some of the crash analysis that we do too,” said Branch County Road Commission Manager Jay Miller. “This was one of them we were concerned with.”
According to the road commission, the township reached out earlier this year to discuss possible safety improvements at the intersection.

- Consumers Energy is asking state regulators to approve a $456 million annual electric rate increase, a proposal that would raise residential bills by nearly 10% if approved.
The request, filed Tuesday, also includes a $25 million surcharge, $52 million over three years for storm restoration costs, and expansion of an investment recovery mechanism approved in its last rate case.
The utility company says the increase is needed to strengthen the electric grid and reduce outages tied to severe weather.
Consumers Energy spokesperson Megan Kirk said the company understands customers are already facing rising costs, but said the investments are necessary to maintain reliability.

- It's been one week since second-floor tenants at the Wildwood Off Main apartment complex were told to leave their homes after engineers found safety issues, leaving some residents without a place to go, and others staying in hotels.
The Kalamazoo Area Building Authority (KABA) condemned the complex in early May, and apartment managers last week told second-floor tenants to vacate.
In a separate letter, managers threatened legal action against tenants who did not leave.
Mike Alwine, a building official with KABA, said his office has been busy because of the number of people affected and the amount of work that remains.
“When we condemn the units, we put the condemn notices on them because of the life safety risk,” Alwine said.
Apartment managers are working to get temporary stairs installed so residents can move out safely, according to Alwine.

He then unsuccessfully tried to steal a car from a nearby family while armed with three knives, police said.
Deans Jr. eventually gave up on stealing the car and ran into a nearby backyard.

Retired HVAC Specialist Brad Shields figured he would receive strange looks when he started dressing like a wizard and standing on the corner of Mosel Avenue and Riverview Drive in Parchment.
"People see a guy standing on a street corner holding a sign, and a lot of people won't even look. They won't make eye contact," Shields said. "I wish that they would, because I'm not asking for anything except for people to be happy."
Instead of asking for money, Shields's signs read positive, often motivating, messages like "be excellent to each other" and "choose kindness." Shields hopes these messages will stick with the people who pass him by.
"I hope that they smile because of this, and then smile to the next person that they see, and that person smiles to the next person the day sees," Shields said.

The team has welcomed back some familiar faces, such as former Portage Northern standout Anna Stinson and goalkeeper Cailynn Junk. It's the team's rallying cry of "Kalamazoo vs. Everybody" that's fueling them this season.
"I think we're a very hard-working group of people: from the Midwest, blue-collared workers as we all like to say but I think we go out there and fight for each other," said midfielder Claudia Muessig. "We have everyone's back and we have a lot of range of ages and that's super fun to be able to play with everybody, day in and day out."
Sitting at 2-2 overall, the team has never been below .500 on the year, as they've won their first and third matches of the season. They currently sit in second place within the USL W's Great Lakes Division, behind De...
