An iconic Grand Rapids office building is being converted into a new boutique hotel featuring a speakeasy inside a former bank vault.
The Michigan Trust Building at 40 Pearl Street NW built in 1892 was the site of a speech by Theodore Roosevelt in 1900 and served as Gerald Ford’s early law office.
Now, it’s set to host a 63-room hotel, fitness center, spa, bar and event venue.
“We are super excited about how this use will permanently stabilize this historic assest and is the best way to candidly share it with the public.”
Sam Cummings is managing partner of CWD Real Estate partnering with Vault Hotels, a team renovating historic buildings into one-or-a-kind hotels in cities across Michigan. CEO Cofounder Jen Julien looked at several area properties.

The River North Business Association unveiled its new community mural, celebrating the rebranding of Grand Rapids’ Monroe North district.
“I had struggled with the original name, the Monroe North Business Association, or the Monroe North District. Everyone just kept calling it North Monroe, Northern Monroe. It was just not getting easy.”
That confusion, Mark Secchia says, is what led to the rebranding of Monroe North to the River North District by the River North Business Association, of which Secchia is President.
“And this area really isn’t anymore what it used to be 20 years ago, so we just really feel like the energy that’s coming in, plus with everything that’s happening on the river, that was really just a natural change from Monroe North to River North.”

Grand Rapids residents and visitors have a new option for getting around downtown as Veo e-scooters and e-bikes are replacing Lime as the city’s micromobility vendor.
“Grand Rapids adopted a single-operator program when we launched our shared micromobility program back in 2022.”
Max Gilles is Strategic Initiatives Manager for Mobile GR, the city’s transportation, mobility, parking and curb management department.
“So, after three great years with Lime, we had a competitive process and Veo was selected through the process.”
He says Veo’s standing and sitting scooters and trikes are more affordable.
“The standard rate currently is $1 to unlock with our Lime provider and 36 cents per minute, and the new proposed rate is $1 to unlock and 33 cents per minute.”
The new Access Rate saves riders money.

Public Works Manager Bob Swain says the launch of the new Renew Grand Rapids pilot program will make recycling food scraps easier with seven composting bins throughout three city wards.
“Hoping to get about 500 people signed up for it. Right now, we’re about 300 already signed up, so we want to get an action call to everybody else. We need at least 200 more people and then we want to expand from there.”

The Wahlfield family, which operates the Fritz Wahlfield Construction Company, contributed $120,000 toward the $5.1 million total. The four acre dog park includes a swimming pond with dog beach and jumping dock, walking trails, activity field and a dog wash station.
Other park improvements include a new entrance, parking lot, pavilions, and a mountain bike trailhead restroom, made possible through public investment, private philanthropy, and community partnerships.

The exhibit features how the city of Grand Rapids would have looked in the 1890’s.
“I think it’s really exciting to be able to step into the past. It feels like you’re in a different time.”
Marketing Manager for the Grand Rapids Public Museum Delany Lee Lemke says since the “Streets of Old Grand Rapids” expanded from the floor into the second floor in May the museum’s attendance has increased.
“Ninety-five percent of our collections are in storage at any given time, so this was an awesome opportunity to bring out some of those early collections.”
The exhibit features how the city of Grand Rapids would have looked in the 1890’s. The expansion features real-life dentist Dr. Ezra Holmes’ office and artifacts from the Kent Scientific Institute.

Television lived on magnetic tape.
When WGVU-TV signed on in 1972, broadcast video ran on massive 2-inch reels developed by engineers at Ampex in 1956. These machines were enormous, mechanical beasts that spun tape at high speed just to get a clear image. 📼
By the late 1970s, WGVU moved to 1-inch tape. That was a big deal.
Compared to the older 2-inch “Quad” systems, 1-inch was:
✔️ Smaller
✔️ More reliable
✔️ Easier to edit
✔️ Still full broadcast quality
It powered public television through the 80s and into the early 90s. Local productions. Community stories. Arts, culture, journalism. All living on magnetic reels.
Then came the next leap.
In 2003, we began transitioning to digital video.

Advocates like Brandi Chane of American Pharmacies notes in some areas, drugstores may be the only local source for vaccinations, health screenings and over-the-counter advice.
Locally owned pharmacies are closing across Michigan, due to low reimbursement rates and the fee structure imposed by Pharmacy Benefit Managers.
PBMs are third-party companies acting as middlemen between drug manufacturers, health insurance plans, and retail pharmacies.
They were designed to streamline and oversee the process.

- Genesis Suites, a community hub on Grand Rapids’ southeast side has cut the ribbon on a significant accessibility and structural improvement project.
Dallas Lenear is co-owner of Genesis Suites, a community hub in the 1300 block of Alger Street Southeast on Grand Rapids’ southeast side. He says when he and his wife bought the 72-year-old building three years ago, it already had event space and offices for community outreach organizations.
Partnering with tenant the Black Impact Collaborative, the two entities installed a new elevator, making the hub accessible to community members of all abilities. A grant awarded to BIC also financed accessible restrooms and expanded on the building’s community gathering capabilities.
Genesis Suites is home to over six different community organizations.
