Grand Rapids Public Schools is celebrating four new fully accessible playgrounds, part of the district’s inclusion efforts
Nothing sounds quite like children let loose on a brand-new playground.
“This is the best first day of school ever!”
Eighth grader Riley Ezell spoke for the student body at Gerald R. Ford Academic Center, where school district leaders and supporters cut the ribbon on one of four accessible playgrounds.
GRPS Foundation President Stephanie Andrews.
“I was told that most playgrounds last about 25 years. So, when you think about the impact on kids, it'll be over 100,000 students and young people who will be impacted by this playground.”

“We’ve been getting feedback from people I want to say as far back as 2017, 2018, people were like, “When are you guys going to start doing organics and taking food scraps?’ So, I think the demand has been there.”
Public Works Manager Bob Swain says the launch of the new Renew Grand Rapids pilot program will make recycling food scraps easier with seven composting bins throughout three city wards.
“Hoping to get about 500 people signed up for it. Right now, we’re about 300 already signed up, so we want to get an action call to everybody else. We need at least 200 more people and then we want to expand from there.”

Meals on Wheels Western Michigan currently delivers over 600,000 meals annually across Kent and Allegan counties – a lifeline keeping older adults healthy, fed and socially connected.
But demand is rising fast, says Dave Gilman, Director of Advancement.
“The Michigan State demographer is telling us that there will be 40- to 50,000 more people in that demographic group in the next 20 years.”
To prepare, the nonprofit is now amid a $4 million complete kitchen overhaul to dramatically boost capacity, increasing menu and nutritional options as well.

Sable Homes is doing that now by utilizing Housing Tax Increment Financing. Doing so defrays infrastructure costs added to the cost of new home construction. Sable pays that cost up front and is repaid over time through future tax revenues.
A three-bedroom home near Gooding Street and Crooks Avenue starts at $260,000. Seventeen new homes will make up the new Belding neighborhood.

Over 40 years later, the Wahlfield family cut the ribbon on the park’s latest expansion, Wahlfield Dog Park, the first dedicated dog park in the Kent County Parks system.
The Wahlfield family, which operates the Fritz Wahlfield Construction Company, contributed $120,000 toward the $5.1 million total. The four acre dog park includes a swimming pond with dog beach and jumping dock, walking trails, activity field and a dog wash station.

When WGVU-TV signed on in 1972, broadcast video ran on massive 2-inch reels developed by engineers at Ampex in 1956. These machines were enormous, mechanical beasts that spun tape at high speed just to get a clear image. 📼
By the late 1970s, WGVU moved to 1-inch tape. That was a big deal.
Compared to the older 2-inch “Quad” systems, 1-inch was:
✔️ Smaller
✔️ More reliable
✔️ Easier to edit
✔️ Still full broadcast quality
It powered public television through the 80s and into the early 90s. Local productions. Community stories. Arts, culture, journalism. All living on magnetic reels.

- Genesis Suites, a community hub on Grand Rapids’ southeast side has cut the ribbon on a significant accessibility and structural improvement project.
Dallas Lenear is co-owner of Genesis Suites, a community hub in the 1300 block of Alger Street Southeast on Grand Rapids’ southeast side. He says when he and his wife bought the 72-year-old building three years ago, it already had event space and offices for community outreach organizations.
Partnering with tenant the Black Impact Collaborative, the two entities installed a new elevator, making the hub accessible to community members of all abilities. A grant awarded to BIC also financed accessible restrooms and expanded on the building’s community gathering capabilities.
Genesis Suites is home to over six different community organizations.

- Residents in the 49507 ZIP code will soon be able to enroll in Rx Kids, the nation’s first prenatal and infant cash prescription program.
Rx Kids gives eligible families $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 monthly during a baby’s first six months up to one year. Participants must reside in a participating community, be at least 16 weeks pregnant or the parent or guardian of a newborn.
Rx Kids Director Dr. Mona Hanna says she wishes the program could be rolled out across Grand Rapids, but the greatest need was on the city’s southeast side.
Forty-two Michigan communities offer the program with another 20 slated to join this summer.

Hope Network recently celebrated the dedication of a new playground at its Holland Center for Autism.
Executive Director for Hope Network’s Centers for Autism Maggie Moore says the unique playground was developed for children participating in the organization’s autism program building communication, social, behavioral and motor skills alongside their family and peers.
The playground can accommodate 30 to 40 children.
The project was funded by private donors and the Michael P. Lettinga Pediatric Fund.

- Travis Snyder walks for a cause. After serving 6 years in the Marine Corps, he recognized the mental health challenges that he and fellow veterans faced were often overlooked and isolating. Travis started his walking challenge in 2019, completing 810 miles around Lake Michigan to raise awareness for veteran mental health and suicide. As of today, he has walked nearly 3,000 miles and continues to share his mission with news outlets nationwide.

The 0.75-mile Grand River Edges Trail extension connects Leonard Street to Ann Street as the Greenway project approaches its halfway point. LaGrand says the project is central to the city’s broader river corridor revitalization efforts.
Once complete, the section will link downtown to Riverside Park and, by extension, the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park.
Once complete, the 85-mile recreation trail will connect Grand Haven to Lowell. The entire Greenway project is expected to be finished by 2031.

- A popular summer camp has returned to West Michigan, providing kids with hands-on experience with water, fire, and first aid safety lessons
Called “Camp 911” , the series of camps kicks off today in Hudsonville.
About 150 young people ages 9 to 11 are participating in a free summer session sponsored by Life EMS Ambulance.They’re offered in partnership with local fire and public safety departments. The camps provide hands-on safety training and emergency response education.
The hands-on sessions are designed to provide youth with the knowledge, skills and confidence to protect themselves and react safely in emergency situations, with instruction provided by Life EMS Ambulance paramedics, local law enforcement, and fire department personnel.
