CSU Forecasters, under the leadership of Hurricane Researcher Phil Klotzbach, attribute the above-average forecast to the La Niña conditions expected in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and warmer than average sea surface temperatures in addition to activity from the West African Monsoon. CSU uses "analog" years, or reference years that show similar characteristics to this one; 2024's reference years are 1878, 1926, 1998, 2010, and 2020, all above average years.

Just one year after starting as a reporter, Bacon-Bercey became Chief Meteorologist at WGR-TV. Creating more opportunities for black women in meteorology was one of Bacon-Bercey’s key goals. In 1977, she took the earnings she won from a game show to establish a scholarship for young girls who wanted to pursue atmospheric sciences.
Bacon-Bercey was the first woman, as well as first African American, to receive the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval for excellence in TV weathercasting. She passed away in 2019 at the age of 90, leaving behind an amazing legacy that has continued to inspire others who follow in her footsteps.

- (02/29/2024) –William Hallett Greene...born in 1864... was the first black graduate from City College in New York at only 19. He wanted to be a meteorologist... which, at the time, meant enlisting in the Signal Service Corps, a branch of the US Army.
He was initially rejected because of his skin color. But with intervention from Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln, he was finally admitted and stationed in Pensacola, FL.
Despite dealing with heavy prejudice, Greene became the first black weather observer, forecaster and station chief.
Though he faced terrible racism and was discharged unfairly from the Army, he paved the way for African Americans to enlist in other sections of the Army where they had previously been banned... and for black meteorologists in the U.S.
