- PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The 21-year-old pilot/flight instructor who safely landed a plane on I-10 east in Pensacola in early August flew with the Blue Angels on Friday.
"I'm incredibly excited," Emily Shelton said just before her flight at NAS Pensacola. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
"I'm just excited to fly something fast, honestly," she added with a laugh. "My planes are really slow"
It has been a whirlwind past month for Shelton, who received local awards and national recognition for the Aug. 3 emergency landing where she maneuvered the small plane under an I-10 overhead sign structure and onto a clear highway area.
She ultimately got herself and her flight student to safety with no injuries after the aircraft suffered engine failure during the flight.

- Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks changed the United States and sent a generation of Americans into military service, one Gold Star widow is reminding the country that the sacrifice of war does not end when a service member dies.
Kimberly Hazelgrove understands that sacrifice from both sides.
She served in the U.S. Army, and in 2004, her husband, Chief Warrant Officer Brian Hazelgrove, was killed while serving in Iraq. Kimberly was left to raise their young children without their father.
Today, she serves as national vice president of Gold Star Spouses of America, working to support surviving military spouses and their families.
Speaking with The National News Desk on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Hazelgrove reflected on how she has worked to ensure her children know their father, some of whom were too young to remember.

But for Paul Batura, a native New Yorker, social historian and vice president of communications at Focus on the Family, some of the most powerful memories are not only of the World Trade Center towers falling, but of the ordinary people who left for work that Tuesday morning and never came home.
Speaking with The National News Desk on the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Batura recalled growing up on Long Island and watching the devastation unfold.

U.S. Department of Agriculture data shows participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has dropped by more than 13 percent within the last year.
In May 2025, nearly three million Floridians received SNAP benefits. Within one year, nearly 700,000 Floridians lost their benefits — 646,821 people, or 22.2%.
For many families, SNAP is a key tool to make ends meet. Food banks are another resource, and some are grappling with growing demand.
“For every meal we put out in the food bank network, SNAP provides 9,” said Michael Ledger, president and CEO of Feeding the Gulf Coast. “We could never scale to replace the nine meals per one that the SNAP provides.”

- President Donald Trump is promising Americans $5,000 checks if Republicans hold onto power after the midterms — a headline-grabbing pledge from his first speech at the Republican midterm convention this week, and one that echoes two similar promises he's made in the past that never came to pass.
"So if the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend," Trump told the crowd. "The reason the Democrats can't do that is because they don't do tariffs, they don't take in money. All they know is poverty and how to ruin our country," Trump added.
The convention, which largely focused on attacking socialism, featured a now-familiar promise of direct payments to Americans. In early 2025, the president and Elon Musk discussed a payment of roughly $5,000 funded by savings from DOGE.
"There's even under consideration a new concept where we give 20% of the DOGE savings to American citizens and 20% goes to paying down debt becaus...

Anderson was not yet president of UVU when Kirk was shot and killed on campus. He became the university’s eighth president in August 2026, which puts him in a unique position.

“He’d have been the most effective and successful conservative politician in more than a century,” Lee wrote on X. “So they killed him.”
Only one suspect, 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with Kirk’s killing, and authorities believe he acted alone. His alleged motives haven’t yet been discussed in court—his case was just allowed Tuesday to proceed to trial—but officials say Kirk’s rhetoric was a factor. The activist used his large audience to promote controversial opinions, including that the Second Amendment is worth the gun deaths its critics say it cause...

- 'We're not stopping': 110 driving schools shut down after English failures tied to crashes

- Description
- The federal government has shut down more than 110 commercial driving schools, effective immediately, after officials said the schools certified thousands of drivers who later failed English language checks during roadside inspections.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Derek Barrs said the agency used emergency authority to remove the schools from the federal registry after connecting drivers who were placed out of service during inspections to where they received training.
“English language proficiency is not something that is new,” Barrs said. “It’s been on the books for a long period of time, nearly 100 years since 1937.”
Barrs said the agency traced the issue through roadside inspections and then back to the schools. He said the schools had trained “over 5000 individuals who had been placed out of service by law enforcement on roadside during inspection processes.”

- PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Northwest Florida State Senator Don Gaetz is pushing for changes inside the Department of Children and Families.
This comes after a grand jury report out of Central Florida.
That report cited several cases in which DCF did not intervene properly, including a case that saw a child murdered.
"Why would you take him?" Escambia County parent Chelsie Smith said.
It's a question parents at Friday's rally want answered.
"These are real people. These are real families. These are real children. These are real issues affecting our community," Higdon Law lawyer Hunter Higdon said.
They say the Department of Children and Families took their children without just cause.
"We don't have five years. We don't have two years. We don't have a year. This is happening now," Escambia County resident Ariel Sackett said. " They are removing children from homes without evidence based on hearsay."

- Florida county opts to regulate data centers, not ban them

- Description
- OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. -- While many local governments in the state and in Northwest Florida are passing laws to prevent data centers from going up in their communities, Okaloosa County is not ruling them out.
"We don't want to be in the dark ages," Okaloosa County chairman and District 4 Commissioner Trey Goodwin said.
The chairman for the Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners says this is the driving force behind his position on data center development.
"I know a lot of jurisdictions have taken the position that they either need to ban or put on moratoriums for these things," Goodwin said. "I'm concerned, and I think Okaloosa County is concerned that that is taking the wrong approach."
The board agreed data centers are likely part of the future, but they want to set rules before a potential project comes to Okaloosa County.
"I'm not at all opposed to having data centers here," District 2 Okaloosa County Commissioner Car...

- Description
- PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A Pensacola NFL Hall of Fame athlete is at the center of a lawsuit.
Former Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith is accused of conning a Native American tribe out of $2.5 million in a development scheme.
Smith is also involved in some local projects. He's also an investor into the Hard Rock project at Maritime Park in Pensacola.
Other people involved on the project say this lawsuit won't have any impacts locally.
A 40 page lawsuit out of a Delaware court outlines the scheme. It cites Smith and his business partner borrowing $2.5 million from Kituwah, LLC.
It's an economic development arm of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. The money was supposed to go towards a renewable energy project in Texas.
The lawsuit alleges that instead, Smith used the $2.5 million to pay back a loan on a different investment.
"He feels terrible," Pensacola businessman Quint Studer said. "He, of course, d...

- Description
- Oregon authorities released dramatic video showing 53-year-old Erik Shunn allegedly firing at arborists, law enforcement and a SWAT team drone during a standoff near Oregon City after becoming angry over trees being cut down that he believed belonged to him.
Investigators say Shunn fired more than 200 shots, attempted to create a barricade with a tractor and was ultimately arrested after a SWAT vehicle pinned him and the tractor against a house.
One arborist reported a bullet striking a log about six inches from him before he crawled to safety. Court documents say Shunn appeared intoxicated, and authorities say he was already prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous criminal cases.
He now faces several charges, including attempted murder, and is being held without bail.

- Description
- PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Florida lawmakers say legislation regulating license plate reader cameras could be coming soon.
State Representative Michelle Salzman spoke about the technology and the growing public concerns surrounding it on Thursday.
The cameras can capture a vehicle’s license plate, location, and description. But privacy concerns have led the state to ban them from state roads and rights-of-way.
Many local law enforcement agencies are also pausing their programs as they wait for guidance from Tallahassee.
Salzman says lawmakers could put guardrails in place. She says the state needs clear rules for license plate reader cameras, including who can use the technology, who can access the data, and where the cameras can be placed.
“It is a good tool," said Salzman. "The conversation is privacy.”
No timeline has been announced for when legislation could be filed. In the meantime, privacy concerns and t...

- Description
- A national policy organization is raising concerns about what it describes as a growing "Red-Green Alliance," an ideological partnership between some far-left and Islamist movements united by opposition to Western political institutions despite having significantly different long-term goals.
The Center for Renewing America argues the phenomenon deserves greater attention as debates over socialism, capitalism and American institutions increasingly play out in politics, on college campuses and among younger generations.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Wade Miller, executive director of the Center for Renewing America, described the term as referring broadly to cooperation between Marxist and Islamist movements.
