- ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Escambia County has one of the highest rates of juvenile arrests in the state, according to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
A new push to expand youth sports in the area hopes to help change that.
Commissioner Lumon May hoped to use funding from the Escambia Children's Trust to get it done -- but there may be some challenges. He says that won't stop him from pressing forward.
The Southern Youth Sports Association is where athletics meets mentorship.
"There are so many tutorial programs, after-school programs, health programs for children," May says. "They just don't attend."
May says his program services upwards of 900 kids, teaching the fundamentals to children 4-14.
He adds the key is ensuring middle school-aged kids have a chance to build their skills -- an opportunity that he believes is limited in the district.

- ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Escambia County Public Schools is short on bus drivers, as district officials say there are currently 18 open positions.
Officials with the school district say the driver shortage has been an issue since COVID. They're looking for qualified applicants to drive buses.
The school district tells WEAR news students are never left behind, even if that means supervisors have to step in and drive buses some days.
They add delays can be caused by several factors, including traffic and weather.
"It just depends on the situation," said Kate Lewis, Escambia County Public Schools safety and training manager. "Of course, if we filled those 18 spots, there's still gonna be delays because we can't predict traffic. We can't predict weather. So I mean, it just depends."
Some parents tell WEAR News they're dealing with not only crowded buses, but delayed pick ups -- sometimes by an hour or more.

WEAR News reported Wednesday that 64-year-old Rodney Braden was arrested last week in Okaloosa County on a charge of grand theft $10,000-$20,000. It's a third-degree felony.
The Florida Department of Business and Regulation shows Braden has a complaint filed against him for unlicensed contractor work.
The State Attorney's Office issued the arrest warrant, which alleges that Braden accepted between $10,000 and $20,000 for a deck project while was not licensed to do that work.
Braden spoke to WEAR News over the phone on Thursday.
"I did a bunch of work for her, then she got mad for whatever reason and turned me into DBPR," he said. "But I already contracted the city before the job. They said no permits were required to do the work i did, so I continued to do it."

“According to our intelligence, we believe he is not only the heir apparent but the individual who has essentially taken over at CJNG,” DEA Associate Administrator Gary Owen told Spotlight on America. “As far as DEA is concerned, it really doesn’t matter who he is. He is now our public enemy No. 1.”

The report described "strategic inventory shortfalls" within the Pentagon's weapons stockpiles and noted that officials were working to "streamline procurement processes and production lead times" in an effort to rebuild supplies more quickly.
Those findings stand in contrast to repeated assurances from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon spokespeople, who have insisted for months that munitions stockpiles were not a concern.

El-Sayed posted on social media Friday, writing in part, "Today on 9/11, we remember and honor the lives that were taken from us in a terrible act of terrorism. Nothing can justify the murder of innocent civilians. Nothing."
The post drew backlash as critics pointed to El-Sayed’s association with Piker, who has appeared at some of his campaign events and has been criticized for previously saying America deserved the 9/11 attacks.
In an interview over the weekend, El-Sayed pushed back when questioned about why he has not directly condemned Piker’s rhetoric.

- Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the warning signs that preceded them remain a central lesson for America's intelligence community.
Before 9/11, U.S. intelligence agencies possessed separate pieces of information about al-Qaida, possible threats involving aviation and suspicious activity at American flight schools. But critical information was not always shared across agencies, preventing officials from seeing the full picture before terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes and killed nearly 3,000 people.
Speaking with The National News Desk, veteran FBI Special Agent in Charge and former Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said the information existed, but determining whether officials could have stopped the attacks remains more complicated.
"Hindsight is always 20/20," Weis said.

- Description
- PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Videos of flooding on downtown Pensacola streets on Saturday are all over social media.
Pensacola Public Works reported the storm dumped 1.7 inches of rainfall at City Hall over a 30-minute period. The team said the entire storm put down 2.99 inches of rain.
WEAR News Meteorologist Brooke Richardson says 1.7 inches in 30 minutes is an extreme rainfall rate, which led to flash flooding.
City Engineering and Public Works officials also note that there was a different 30-minute period where the rainfall intensity was the equivalent of 9 inches of rain per hour.
Once the rain stopped, the stormwaters receded.
Many of the flooding videos posted to social media were taken on Palafox Street.
Recently, the City of Pensacola completed its "Reimagine Palafox" project. During that work, the city upgraded the street's stormwater infrastructure.

- Description
- An Afghan national accused of supporting her family's plans for an ISIS-inspired mass shooting on Election Day 2024 has been deported in the first case ever brought before a specialized federal court created three decades ago to remove noncitizens tied to terrorism.
The Justice Department announced Friday that Nazira Haji Zada, 47, was removed from the United States after conceding that she qualified as an "alien terrorist" under federal law and waiving her right to appeal the removal order.
Zada, who had been living in Fort Worth, Texas, was a lawful permanent resident. The government alleged she supported a plot involving her son, Abdullah Haji Zada, and son-in-law, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, who were previously arrested and convicted in connection with plans to carry out an ISIS-inspired mass-casualty attack around Election Day 2024.

- Description
- California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s evolving position on expanding the Supreme Court is renewing debate over the future of two institutions at the center of American government, as the Democrat also calls for changing the Electoral College.
Newsom recently said he is becoming more open to expanding the Supreme Court after previously expressing concern that changing the number of justices could lead future congressional majorities to repeatedly alter the court. He has also called 18-year term limits for justices a “no-brainer.”
Newsom separately criticized the Electoral College, arguing the system has “perverted” American politics and calling for a constitutional amendment to change it.

- Description
- JAY, Fla. -- The war with Iran is hitting farmers hard, as diesel prices continue to rise.
As of Friday, the average is $6.06 per gallon.
Mickey Diamond owns J.M. Diamond Farms in Jay.
He's got more than a dozen tractors. Each holds about a 180 gallons of fuel.
"Probably an average day of harvest is 4-500 gallons a day of fuel," Diamond said. "And our crop this year, we've been very dry. We probably have a half a crop, is all we have. Peanuts aren't that great, cotton is not good, so it's going to be a tough year."
It's now costing $2 more per gallon than last year to fill up, impacting his bottom line.
"A lot of people think that food prices is high because farmers are passing the price on, but we don't get to, and this affects our bottom line considerably," Diamond said. "I mean our trucks are diesel, our tractors are diesel, everything we drive is diesel."
Diamond says he's doing all he can to...

- Description
- The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board voted unanimously to approve the renaming of Nashville International Airport in honor of Dolly Parton.
On Friday morning, the BNA board gave unanimous approval to rename the airport in honor of the late country music legend and Tennessee native. She died Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 80 years old after a brief battle with cancer.
The decision comes after debate over how the renaming would impact branding materials and marketing, and after questions were raised of costs and who would cover them.
Airport officials did not confirm an exact budget, but a 2025 assessment on the failed initiative to rename BNA to Trump International Airport estimated a $10.3 million price tag.
