- A 16-year-old girl from Barnsley in Yorkshire has gained a place at the Bolshoi Theatre's ballet academy. Tala Lee-Turton will spend a year studying in Moscow. If she shows promise, she will stay for a comprehensive training program. Only eight British dancers have joined the academy in its 239-year history. Alice Lagnado talked to Tala about her achievement, and then to Luke Jennings, the Observer's dance critic, about the significance of being accepted into the Bolshoi's prestigious school.
Without financial support, Tala may not be able to realise her dream. Tala's family have now started a local sponsorship campaign to raise at least 75 per cent of the required funds. - Russia is nothing if not a land of writers. But the country which brought us Tolstoy, Chekhov and Dostoyevsky didn't stop producing talented writers at the end of the 1800s. In recent years Russian women writers have come to the fore, giving us such names as Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Tatiana Tolstaya, and Nina Sadur. Today there's a brand new generation of young women writers in their twenties and early thirties. - The Norwegian right wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik who killed 77 people in his bombing and shooting campaign says he was defending Norway from multiculturalism.
Breivik told a court in Oslo that the people he targetted at a political summer camp on Utoya island - run by Norway's Labour Party - were "brainwashed" and "actively uphold multicultural values".
But strip away his extremism and narcissism - echoes of what he has to say can be found in conservative political thought.
He's stated that he feared Norwegians would become a minority in their own country - and it's a fear we've seen expressed in the British media and it's been at the heart of the French presidential election.
