- The Russian government has limited the social reasons for which a woman can have an abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Until now, women in prison, widows, those with husbands with severe disabilities, rape victims, and women stripped of parental rights all qualified for state-funded abortions after 12 weeks. Now, only women who have been raped will qualify. The government says the move is necessary to turn around Russia's demographic crisis, that acording to the UN threatens to knock a fifth off the country's population by 2050. To discuss this, Polina Boiko is joined by Anne Scanlan, London region education officer for the Life charity, Kate Smurthwaite, media spokesperson for Abortion Rights UK, and Dr Charlie Walker, lecturer in sociology at the University of Southampton.
