- The NYPD has a long tradition of holding Smokers, “Fight Club” style events that date back to an earlier time in New York City’s police culture. The fights are held in an effort to maintain morale while also squashing beefs and petty feuds between cops.
VICE follows Dave Siev, an NYPD Lieutenant on the cusp of retirement, as he organizes Fight Night at Madison Square Garden. Siev has been spearheading Smokers for the NYPD since the 90s.
During the day he protects and serves as one of NYC’s finest; when off the clock, he organizes matches and fights amongst his cadets and sergeants. VICE was along to witness fights including a rivalry among two neighboring precincts, and some unfinished business between two cops on the same force.

Since 1980, there have been 250,000 recorded unsolved homicides in the United States, and due to lack of funding and support for forensic research and law enforcement training, that number continues to grow.
Scientists at the Institute for Forensic Anthropology & Applied Sciences at the University of South Florida are looking to change all of that through their work at USF’s Facility for Outdoor Research and Training (FORT). On this “body farm”, scientists and law enforcement officials come together to exchange knowledge about how bodies decompose in Florida’s subtropical environment in the hopes of creating new processes to solve some of the nation’s cold cases.

- It’s been a long, long winter, and Taji is ready for the summer. To get a head start on his summer bod, he took to Yelp in search of the lowest-rated tanning salon he could find, in order to transform his skin to the perfect shade of orange.
So naturally, he went off to New Jersey to experience the services of a salon that’s tanned iconic celebrities including the cast members of “The Jersey Shore” and “The Real Housewives.”
Unfortunately, Sizzle Tans has received a heap of one-star reviews from people claiming to have experienced bad customer service — and subpar tanning results. At the risk of getting burned, Taji went to get a spray tan from one of Yelp’s worst-rated tanning salons to see if the reviews are accurate, or if they could redeem themselves.

- When Looney, an OG Shoreline Crip from Venice Beach, CA, was incarcerated, he learned how to tattoo using a Walkman motor and an ink pen. Although illegal, being a “scratcher” (someone without formal tattoo training) in prison gave Looney the ability to cross the cultural divides that normally exist between different segments of the population and helped him gain respect amongst his fellow inmates.
Since his release, Looney has worked on building up his tattoo skills and continuing to learn by studying the works of Paul Booth, Bob Tyrrell, and Mister Cartoon. But since most of his training was done inside a prison cell instead of through an apprenticeship at a tattoo studio, he’s constantly had to prove to others that he’s more than just a scratcher. VICE catches up with Looney as he tattoos his friend Blue Rag and learns about his tattoo journey.
