- The 2013-14 Ukraine Crisis attracted far-right foreign fighters from around the world, who came to fight on both sides of the conflict.
Azov, a Ukrainian battalion with deep roots in the ultranationalist and hooligan scenes, drew foreign radicals attracted by its extremist politics. Others joined pro-Russian militias, attracted by the notion of Putin’s Russia as a staunch defender of a traditionalist Christian Europe.
In this episode of Decade of Hate, host Tim Hume looks back at how the war in Ukraine acted as a training ground for the international far right, giving them real-life combat experience, which they could then bring home with them.

- The Waco siege of 1993 started on February 28th when the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) began the stand-off with the religious sect, the Branch Davidians. The group was led by David Koresh, whose birth name is Vernon Howell. The Branch Davidians, consisting of 91 members, including 25 children, resided in a compound east of Waco, called the Mount Carmel Center.
Under the suspicion of stockpiling weapons, the ATF attempted to serve search and arrest warrants. Having been warned of the raid, the Branch Davidians were prepared. This initial gunfire battle resulted in deaths on both sides (4 ATF agents and 6 Branch Davidian members) prompting the FBI to become involved. For the following 51 days, the Branch Davidians and law enforcement were at a long and gruesome stand-off, tragically resulting in a fire that took the lives of 76 members.

- Vince Hanneman, AKA The Junk King, has become famous in Austin for the massive, multi-room, 60-ton Cathedral of Junk he has been building on his property since the 80s. As the structure grew, he faced complaints from neighbors, resulting in threats from the local government to cease and desist. However, he remained stubborn, jumping through all the hoops officials threw his way so that he could keep the structure standing. Vince, who resides on the same property as his structure, only allows appointments made over the phone. Visitors who show up without an appointment are often turned away. Vince and his Cathedral of Junk encapsulates the infamous slogan, “Keep Austin Weird”.
