- Endangered for Diamonds: The Tigers of Panna
- Date posted
- Description
- Panna, a district in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is known for its dynamic dry forests, its grasslands, deep gorges with waterfalls and the Ken river, which cuts through the forest and is its lifeline. Nestled in these forests is Panna Tiger Reserve, an eco-paradise and safe haven for animals, especially tigers. It is a tourist attraction, and a great place to learn about conservation efforts. But Panna Tiger Reserve also hides a secret that tourists often don’t notice — illegal diamond mining.
‘Trouble in Paradise’ is a new series that explores the dark underbelly of popular tourist destinations. In our first episode, VWN host Surabhi Tandon travels to Panna to uncover its secret and figure how conservation and mining strike an uneasy balance in a protected forest.Click here to subscribe to VICE: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE

- In some North Indian towns and villages, it’s an age-old tradition for unmarried boys to live in a room outside of the home called the "baithak", separated particularly from the women of the family. The boys, aged between 6 and 20 years old, enter their own houses only for meals and hang out in these "baithaks" during the day. VICE World News travels to Rajasthan and Haryana in India, to see why some villages follow this system of separating families on the basis of sex and understand the rarely documented "Baithak" System.

- Inside a Neo Nazi Music Festival | Decade of Hate
- Date posted
- Description
- Music festivals, like most cultural events, were badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, impacting both the smallest of DIY festivals to behemoths like Glastonbury. And this was no different for the neo-Nazi music scene.
Rechtsrock is a German term for music that acts as a vehicle for far-right ideology.
A key part of this scene are music festivals that act as key networking hubs for neo-Nazi groups across Europe. Festivals in Ukraine, Italy and Greece feature bands from across the Continent, and there’s a strong scene in Germany, which is home to some of the largest neo-Nazi music festivals in recent years.
One of those festivals, held in the German state of Thuringia, drew in an estimated 5,000 neo-Nazis. It was organised by the Turonen, a violent neo-Nazi gang who were recently targeted in a raid by police where large amounts of cash, weapons and crystal meth were found. These festivals can make organisers hundreds of thousands of euros, ...

- Is the War on Drugs Killing the Environment? | The War on Drugs
- Date posted

- Description
- We talk a lot about the human and financial costs of the War on Drugs – but this conflict is also having a serious environmental impact.
From the military spraying pesticides onto the Amazon rainforest to suppress coca production, to MDMA producers dumping toxic chemicals into rivers in the Netherlands – the illegal drug trade is unquestionably bad for nature.
But whose fault is this? All the drugs we take could be produced in much greener ways as part of a legal, regulated market. The problem is not that they are drugs, it’s that they are illegal. Is the war on drugs killing the environment?

- Foeke Postma, an investigative journalist at Bellingcat, used fake Instagram accounts to follow people, reverse search images, geolocate pictures, and watch videos frame by frame to identify customers and exotic animal suppliers in Dubai.
The exotic pet trade is a multi-million dollar industry, seen as a symbol of power and wealth. It’s no wonder influencers and celebrities use them as props in their own social media content.
Postma set out to identify various animals through their spots, stripes and whiskers, tracing them back to anonymous individuals who were potentially engaged in the illegal leasing of wildlife. This is how he exposed Dubai’s exotic animal trade via Instagram.
In our series Super Users, VICE World News explores the latest technology being used to fight crime, trafficking, climate change and social injustice.

This interaction often involves a small subset of fans – ‘ultras’, ‘casuals’, ‘hooligans’, the definitions change depending on where you are in the world – who are seen as the most devoted, fanatical followers of their football clubs, often engaging in extreme violence with each other.
But what is it about hooligans that makes them a target of far-right recruitment?
This is how, from London to Belgrade to Jerusalem, right-wing movements and political parties have attempted to co-opt the testosterone-charged energy of the football terraces, and turn it into a ready-made weapon to silence opponents. But also how rival hooligan firms can put aside their differences, just as they do for international games, and form their own far-right movements.

- Down with the King: Braving Violence for Democracy

- In August 2020, Thai university students called for reform of the monarchy, breaking a longstanding taboo in a country where the King has a God-like status. A year later, despite the arrests of key leaders and hundreds of detainments, the social movement continues to burn as protesters and police clash over a war of ideas.
It all started following a 2014 coup that saw general Prayut Chan-ocha take control of the country. He then rose to Prime Minister after a disputed election in 2018. The military re-wrote the nation's constitution while the king moved to further entrench his influence and power.
Today, this youth-led movement hopes to reduce those powers while demanding the resignation of Prayut for allegedly failing the country from all directions. Their demands have resurfaced even stronger as the pandemic deteriorates.
In this episode of “Why We Protest”, VICE World News meets the frontline protestors of the Thai pro-democracy movement a...

- Did the CIA Actually Sell Crack in the 1980s? | The War On Drugs
- Date posted
- Description
- The rumours have circulated for decades. Did the CIA flood the inner cities of the US with crack cocaine in the 1980s? Was the American government actually responsible for the crack epidemic?
Often dismissed as a conspiracy theory, but passionately believed by huge sections of the population – the idea that US intelligence agencies knowingly protected drug traffickers and played a role in bringing cocaine into the US is one of the most often repeated stories of the War on Drugs.
But what is the truth to these allegations? It turns out the real story is perhaps even stranger than the street-level gossip.
This is how one reporter exposed a web of CIA cover-ups, and how the rest of the media destroyed him for doing so.

- How the Far Right Use Memes to Recruit | Decade of Hate
- Date posted
- Description
- How did the far-right use memes to code and cloak their hateful ideologies?
Memes are some of the most used and ubiquitous images on the internet. If you’ve used the internet over the last decade, there's no chance you’ve not seen one.
Political parties and groups of all persuasions have jumped on the meme culture bandwagon, but none more so than the far-right, who have weaponized irony to cloak their hateful ideologies and spread their memes far and wide into non-political spaces.
Not content with poisoning the online discourse, far-right memes have also breached the physical space, playing a part in an escalation of far-right violence across the globe.
But how did this happen? How did a cartoon frog and a simple hand gesture impact world politics and normalise hate speech?
Correction: Monday 9 August
An earlier version stated that Charlottesville is in North Carolina instead of Virginia.

- Learning to Live with the Voices in Your Head

- Between eight and 14 percent of people hear voices, often linked to a personal trauma.
Conventional psychiatry treatment regularly resorts to hospitalization or too strong medication that often prohibits sufferers from living a normal life.
In France, for the past ten years, the Voice Hearer Network (REV), chaired by Vincent Demassiet, has been organizing discussion groups to help people learn to live with the voices in their heads and share their best coping techniques. The goal is to reduce the use of medication and even, in the long run, completely stop using it.

- How We Staged a UFO Hoax | Fakes, Frauds & Scammers
- Date posted

- Description
- In 2009, residents in a New Jersey town started seeing UFOs. Was it aliens, the government, or something more sinister? Actually, it was two guys, some flares and balloons. But that didn’t stop the 911 calls rolling in, and the media picking up on the story.
Eventually, Joe Rudy and Chris Russo revealed their hoax to the public, saying it was a "social experiment". They were sentenced to community service for "disorderly conduct" but to this day say they would do it all again. We sat down with Joe and Chris to hear how (and why) they perpetrated the hoax.
In a series of candid interviews, Fakes, Frauds & Scammers relives some of the most audacious scams and fraudulent stunts of our time from the mouths of the perpetrators themselves. Whether it’s money, fame or simply an addiction to lying, we find out what motivated these tricksters and whether the highs, lows and ramifications were worth it in the end.
