- Designed to last three years, Landsat 5 was launched in 1984 and transmitted data until the launch of Landsat 8 in 2013. In this episode of Eyes on Earth, we learn about some of the challenges—and adrenaline rushes—Landsat 5 gave the flight operations team as it aged, as well as the fondness our two guests came to have for the satellite’s unique personality and the whole team as they served on it during the satellite’s twilight years. In October 2022, the Flight Operations Team won the 2020 Group Pecora Award during the 22^nd^ William T. Pecora Memorial Remote Sensing Symposium.

- A winter of heavy rain causes flooding in California's Tulare Basin, threatening cropland. The basin was once the site of a large lake that appeared naturally every winter as rainfall and snowmelt from the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range flowed down and filled the basin. It was even known as the largest lake west of the Mississippi River.
But more than a century ago, when irrigation systems were developed to water area crops, the spring runoff wasn't enough to reach the basin anymore, and it dried up. This winter's heavy rains are filling it up again, and the snow has yet to melt from the mountaintops. A series of images from Landsat show the extent of the floodwaters in dark blue or black.
Growing vegetation appears green, revealing gridded farm fields. Tan-colored fields show bare soil where nothing is growing. Landsat satellites continue to provide valuable monitoring for water levels and potential flooding around the world.

- This is an animation showing the changing conditions relative to the historic record of USGS streamgages from January 1, 2023 to March 31, 2023. The river conditions shown range from the driest condition seen at a gage (red open circles) to the wettest (blue closed circles). A purple outer ring around a gage indicates it is flooding.
Drought conditions persisted in parts of South Central U.S., such as Oklahoma and Texas, from January to March.
January brought high flows in the Northeast U.S., as well as atmospheric rivers that caused flooding to the West Coast and Southwest U.S.
The beginning of February brought frontal systems that caused high water to parts of the Eastern U.S. such as Georgia and South Carolina.

- Do animals prank humans? It sometimes feels that way, says Yellowstone Volcano Observatory’s scientist-in-charge Mike Poland. Mike shows some of the ways animals have “interacted” with monitoring equipment in this April 1, 2023 monthly update of activity at Yellowstone Volcano.
Herds of elk or bison make a lot of noise when they walk by a monitoring station. The noise is picked up by the seismometer and the sudden burst of activity in a data feed might cause some to be concerned. Fortunately, that noise can be filtered out so seismologists will still see small earthquakes even when the herds are walking by. It's funny to think that maybe these animals are pranking us as they stomp around the station. This video provides an overview of the polar bear research program, ongoing since 1985, that focuses on population dynamics, health and energetics, distribution and movements, maternal denning, and methods development. The majority of our research focuses on the two polar bear subpopulation’s whose range includes Alaska: the Southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation that ranges between the North Slope of Alaska and western Canada and the Chukchi Sea or Alaska-Chukotka subpopulation that ranges between the northwest coast of Alaska and eastern Russia. - Cheyenne Bottoms is the largest inland wetland in the United States. Water normally diverts from rivers into the vast marshland. The wetland water level changes with precipitation and surface flows. For example, 2007 was a wet year. And 2013 was a dry year. Heavy rains in late summer typically replenish the water levels in the marshland, making it a key stopover for thousands of migrating birds to eat and rest. In the fall of 2022, the birds found nothing to stop for. Landsat images show not only the lack of water, but also an overall lack of healthy green vegetation due to drought conditions in the region.

- Could an external event trigger a Yellowstone eruption? No, says Yellowstone Volcano Observatory’s scientist-in-charge Mike Poland, that’s not how volcanoes work. Most of the pressure that drives a volcano toward eruption comes from within, from the exsolution of gases in the magmatic system. External events, like large earthquakes or nuclear blasts can't cause that.
This question arose in 2019 after the magnitude 7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake in eastern California, and again in March of 2020 with the magnitude 6.5 in central Idaho. More recently, YVO has been asked if a nuclear blast could trigger a Yellowstone eruption.
Consider Yellowstone's history. The last lava flow eruption was 70,000 years ago, and there have been hundreds to thousands of magnitude 7, 8, 9 earthquakes in the western U.S. since that time without triggering an eruption. - Winter has arrived in the Yellowstone region. The deep snow and cold temperatures are harsh for animals, harsh for humans, and also harsh for volcano monitoring equipment. To protect the instruments and keep data flowing, seismometers are buried, and solar panels and radio antennas are positioned high enough above ground to prevent them from getting covered in snow.
But the pole-like GPS antennas can become coated in ice during stormy weather. Once the antenna is covered, it can cause the signal to take a little longer to get to the antenna. So in the online data streams, the data might appear as though the ground went down, when really it was just ice on the antenna. When the ice goes away, the data pop back up to previous levels. Fortunately, there are so many GPS stations in the region that data from different sites can be used as a comparison to make sure the ground is not moving, and a quick check on the weather can confirm local conditions.

Within hours, multiple dome fountains were active in the central-eastern portion of Halema‘uma‘u crater’s floor. There were several large bursts of lava from the newly opened vent. One large burst up to 50 meters (164 feet) high occurred around 4:49 pm and sent a wave of lava across the crater floor.
The high initial effusion rates rapidly declined as lava stored within the magma system over the past month erupted. The lava fountains decreased in vigor overnight on January 5, reaching heights of about 5 meters (16 feet). By January 8, activity focused at one dominant dome fountain, bubbling in the central-eastern portion of the active lava surface.

2022 was an average year for earthquake activity. About 2,500 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone region, with over one-third of those being part of a single, long-lived swarm near Grizzly Lake, between Norris Geyser Basin and Mammoth Hot Springs. The area from Hebgen Lake to north central Yellowstone is the most seismically active area in the region, so it isn’t too much of a surprise that a swarm occurred there.
The largest earthquake of 2022 was a magnitude 4.2 that occurred in May in the eastern part of the park and was felt by many people in the Yellowstone region. There were a few magnitude three earthquakes, but the vast majority were magnitudes two and below.
