- A firefighter has died while fighting a blaze after an Emirates Airlines plane burst into flames after it crash-landed at Dubai International Airport.
The airline’s CEO said 14 other people were hospitalised after Wednesday’s (August 3) incident. It was not immediately clear if the injured were passengers, crew or rescue workers.
A man waiting for relatives on the flight said he had spoken to them by phone. “They said they’re safe and alright, but that they felt a great panic as the plane was on fire.”
Another man said his family had also told him they were OK and there had been a problem with the landing gear.
Footage has emerged purporting to show passengers collecting their hand luggage from overhead lockers before evacuating the plane.

- Qatar Airways has lifted its stake in International Airlines Group (IAG) which owns British Airways, Iberia, and most of Aer Lingus and Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling.
Qatar has raised its share ownership from 15.67 percent to 20.01 percent but said it will not be buying any more. It is now the largest single stockholder in IAG.
The IAG shares – which cost about 375 million pounds (444 million euros) – are a bargain having lost about a quarter of their value since Britain voted in June to leave the EU.
They are also cheaper for overseas buyers since that vote due to the pound’s big devaluation.

- Emotions continue to run high in Turkey after Friday’s failed coup, not least for the prime minister.
Visibly moved during a news briefing in Ankara, premier Binali Yildirim recalled a question put to him by his grandson: “Why are they killing people?”
Still smarting from the coup attempt, the Turkish leadership has hinted its friendship with the US could be at stake if Washington fails to extradite US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who denies involvement in the coup.
The US says it is prepared to extradite Gulen but only if Turkey provides evidence linking him to crime.
Yildirim has rejected that demand.
“We would be disappointed if our (American) friends told us to present proof even though members of the assassin organization are trying to destroy an elected government under the directions of that person,” he said.
“At this stage there could even be a questioning of our friendship.”

Almost 20 metres long by 5 metres wide, experts say it appears to be part of a complex of baths in good condition with sections representing the accomplishments of Hercules.
The island was under Roman control from 31 B.C. to the 4th century A.D..
The mosaic was discovered during delicate construction work on Larnaca’s sewage system. More is expected to be uncovered as works continue.
It’s to be transferred to a new dedicated wing in a city museum.

- A report from Amnesty International has turned the focus on alleged kidnapping and torture in Egypt of hundreds of students, political activists, protesters and even young teenagers during the past three years.
A demonstration in Rome organised by the charity sought to highlight how people vanished without trace after security forces raided their homes. Most of them, it is claimed are supporters of former Muslim Brotherhood president Mohamed Morsi.
“We know that on average three or four people disappear every day in Egypt. They vanish. Their family knows nothing about them, forced disappearances, held, torture practised in jails,” opined Riccardo Noury a spokesman for the charity.
In some cases, Egyptian police have been prosecuted. Last Tuesday, six officers were sentenced to between three to seven years in jail for torturing and killing a prisoner.
