The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the forces have pushed forward to within one kilometre of the Castello Road.
Rebels say the east of Aleppo is now sealed off and the soldiers loyal to President Bashar al-Assad are within firing range of the thoroughfare.
The advance took place during a 72-hour ceasefire declared by the Syrian army.
The city has been roughly split into government and rebel-held areas since 2012.
For more than five years, Assad has been fighting a civil war in Syria, which has broken the country up and had a disastrous effect on the economy.

- It is a ceasefire in all but name, the Syrian military’s declaration of a 72-hour “regime of calm”, coinciding with the end of Ramadan, that began at one o’clock on Wednesday morning, and will end at midnight on Friday.
Damascus has avoided calling it a ceasefire, as previous truces have broken down, and have been negotiated. This is simply a gesture by the Assad regime.
President Bashar al-Assad was on national television at prayer at the main mosque in Homs for the festival of Eid al-Fitr, but while all this was taking place bombs and shells continued to rain down on the city of Aleppo.
Rebel groups reported heavy fighting was also continuing in Idlib and the town of Maydaa, and that air strikes were hitting the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front and ISIL positions. Neither of these groups have ever been included in this or previous truces.

- Three suicide bombers have struck in three Saudi Arabian cities just before the end of Ramadan, which runs through Tuesday and Wednesday.
In Medina the bomber set off his device near the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s most sacred sites, killing two security officers.
Two other bombers attacked targets in Qatif, on the border with Kuwait, and in Saudi Arabia’s second city Jeddah, but without claiming any victims.
The bomber in Jeddah appeared to be targeting the US consulate on America’s independence day public holiday.
In Qatif it was a Shi’ite mosque that was targeted by at least one explosion. In May 2015 another Shi’ite mosque in the city was attacked, killing 21 people.
No-one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

According to Turkish media they relied on Islamic State cells in Turkey for logistical support.
Visiting the site on Saturday, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at least 44 people had been detained in relation to the attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said Israel would reduce the amount of tax revenues it collects each month on behalf of the Palestinians, saying that some of the money was being given to families of attackers.
The crackdown follows a spike in Palestinian violence, with several deadly attacks in the past couple of days, including on a 13-year-old Israeli-American girl.

According to a Turkish government official, the three suspected bombers are from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper also suggested Chechen involvement. It reported the organiser of the attack was Akhmed Chatayev, a male of Chechen origin.
A United Nations sanctions list names him as an ISIL leader charged with training Russian-speaking militants. Chatayev is listed as being wanted by Russian authorities.

A spokesman for Erdogan said the letter, which has not been published, expressed the president’s sadness over the incident.
The Kremlin went further, saying the words included an apology and that Turkey said it had not intended to shoot down a Russian plane.
The incident in November shattered diplomatic ties between Ankara and Moscow.

One of the pilots died after the aircraft was hit in airspace above the Turkish border with Syria last November. He was shot by militants on the ground after ejecting from the aircraft.

Filmed in a Damascus suburb on Sunday at an air base recently recaptured by government forces, Assad was seen touring several positions and talking with government troops.
Now in it’s firth year, the Syrian conflict, which began as an uprising against Assad’s rule, has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced 11 million others.
The footage, broadcast on pro-government channel Syrian TV, also showed Syria’s President breaking fast with troops, who continue to fight during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with Syria’s moderate opposition leader Ahmad Jarba in Moscow on Monday.
During the meeting, Lavrov once again said it was for the Syrian people to decide their own fate without any interference from outside.

The ISIL-linked Aamaq news agency posted video footage purporting to show the group in control of Syria’s Thawra oil field.

- Greece, Britain and Israel have sent planes and helicopters to Cyprus to help fight one of the biggest forest fires to hit the island in years.
The blaze broke out in the Troodos mountain region of the country and has been fanned by high winds and scorching temperatures.
The fire was mostly brought under control late on Monday.
The area hardest hit is covered by pine forest and fruit orchards.
The Cypriot president described the situation as “really tragic” and told reporters the damage is irreparable.

The city’s governor had cited security concerns in preventing two annual parades from happening this year.
Earlier this week an ultra-nationalist youth group vowed to stop the march if it went ahead, calling the event immoral.
Dozens of people gathered in support of the LGBT parade just off a major commercial street.
Police called on them to disperse and prevented activists from marching or making statements.
On Friday Istanbul’s authorities said a parade planned for next week would be banned.
Security is tight after several bombings in recent months, blamed on Kurdish militants and the self-styled Islamic State group.

- Egypt’s former President Mohamed Mursi has been given another life sentence after a court in Cairo found him guilty of espionage and leaking state secrets.
The leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood has already received the death penalty and a life sentence in other cases.
Six others accused alongside Mursi had death sentences approved on Saturday, including three journalists sentenced in their absence.
Prosecutors argued that the former president and his aides were involved in leaking sensitive documents to Qatari intelligence that exposed the location of weapons held by Egyptian armed forces.
Relations between the two countries have been hostile since 2013 when after mass protests, Mursi was overthrown by then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Now president, he believes the Brotherhood poses a serious threat to security despite the massive crackdown on the group that’s seen tens of thousands jailed.

The battle for the northern city between Russian-backed Syrian government forces and rebel groups has left hundreds dead.
Despite the temporary ceasefire, the UN on Thursday once again repeated its call for a more lasting end to the hostilities.

- The cockpit voice recorder from crashed EgyptAir flight 804 has been found, according to the Egyptian investigation committee.
Search teams had to salvage the device over several stages as it was damaged, the committee said on Thursday.
It said in a statement that the memory unit had been recovered.
Flight MS804 when it crashed on 19 May while flying from Paris to Cairo. There were 66 people on board.
