- On Wednesday 15 July, the Petitions Committee will hold its first ever hybrid e-petitions session to discuss petitions relating to the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.
During the session, MPs will discuss the Government’s approach to lockdown, in light of the large number of petitions about easing COVID-19 lockdown restrictions on certain sectors, businesses and activities.
More than 287,000 petitioners have signed parliamentary petitions relating to easing lockdown restrictions, with the most popular - calling on the Government to allow gyms and leisure centres to reopen - gathering more than 129,000 signatures.
MPs will discuss the following petitions:
- Allow gyms and leisure centres to reopen
- Allow Salons and Tattoo parlors to open at same time as hairdressers
- Delay the reopening of schools to September

- In May, Kerry McCarthy MP held a video call with naturalist Chris Packham to discuss why he started his petition calling on the Government to ban driven grouse shooting. The petition received 111,965 signatures before closing due to the 2019 General Election.
In the call, Kerry - then a member of the Petitions Committee – and Chris discuss his and fellow petitioners' concerns about the impacts of driven grouse shooting on the environment, animals, and people.
Since 2016, petitions calling for driven grouse shooting to be banned have received over 400,000 signatures.

- On 3 June, Petitions Committee member Tom Hunt MP held a video call with Dr Daniel Allen, an animal geographer who started a petition calling for tighter laws on pet theft, and other campaigners on this issue. On the call, campaigners shared their experiences of pet theft and discussed the changes to the law they feel would stop other pet owners from having to suffer as they have.
Daniel’s petition reached over 117,000 signatures before it closed due to the 2019 General Election. The petition was due to be debated in Parliament before Westminster Hall sittings, where petitions debates are held, had to be suspended due to social distancing rules.
